  1. Agreed. I think initially you think it won't be that big of a deal because of our depth and then they return and it becomes noticeable how much they have been missed. Same thing with St Clair. I think when he comes back it'll be obvious something had been missing.

Especially on the PK. St Clair is a terrific penalty killer. And will help out on one of the lower lines with his aggressive forecheck. I like his game. Simple but effective.

  2. I have wondered if the vote would have differed if the choices had been Hawks and Fighting Nodaks.

I hate this whole nickname fiasco but have been wondering the exact same thing (and I'm one of the non-voters because I hate how the entire process played out). How many "Fighting Hawks" voters would have voted for just "Hawks"? Let's not kid ourselves, "Fighting" is winning the nickname vote not "Hawks".

  3. Jost is the only potential draftee besides Mattson that will be a lock to get drafted.  I believe Hoff could get drafted as well as Gardner.  There may be more.  Jost and Mattson would be the only top 3-4 rounders.

What about Kierstad? I've heard he has been turning some heads in the USHL this year but haven't seen any projections on where/if he gets drafted.

  4. If you hit the Bong, the Anchor Bar in Superior is worth the drive for a@# kickin' burgers.

If you head over to Superior, the Thirsty Pagan is also supposed to be a good spot for pizza and local brews.

  5. Yup your right on Yon, I forgot about him.  I could see him coming in and playing a lower line role.  I think both Keane and Bowen would really benefit from playing another year of juniors.  Mattson's draft stock will obviously take a beating most likely but you're correct, he's another guy that show play one more season in the USHL.  It benefited Wilkie a ton.

I would like to see most of our guys get the chance to play one more year of juniors and see Berry take a run at those two Finn's playing at Sioux City I believe.

Looks like only one of the two Finn's in Sioux City would be able to come in next year as one is a 1999 and the other a 1995. Anyone here anything more on the kid who played at Maine last year and now playing in the USHL that has apparently visited already (can't remember his name)?

  6. The only forwards that are ready are Hoff and Jost.  Judging by your senior forward total, Berry will either have to find 2 more or bring in someone that probably isn't 100% ready.  Mattson is going back to GRHS after a disappointing dozen USHL games; Keane and Bowen are struggling. Collin Adams isn't tearing up the USHL, but he's young and I don't think he could come in next year anyway.  Other than Hoff and Jost, I can't seem to find one of our forward recruits that are producing at the moment.  I could be missing someone.

I think Yon would have to come in based on his age and I think you can discard Cakebread as a commit moving forward. Can't imagine he ever makes his way to campus. I would think one of Keane and Bowen comes in next year depending on departures. I think Mattson is one of those whose draft position may dictate one way or the other where he plays next year although a full year in the USHL would be beneficial.

  7. Those lines are what I was thinking as well.  You could rotate Wilkie and JJ depending on how they are playing.  It's going to be tough when St. Clair comes back because I have thought Gardner looks ok as well.  His size and tenacity are perfect for that 4th.

And he seems to be a guy the coaches trust to take faceoffs as well. I don't know how St. Clair isn't slotted in as that 4th line center/PK guy when he gets healthy. With the way injuries have gone so far, who knows what could happen by the time St. Clair gets back.

  8. Completely agree with your Gersich/J assessment.

I agree as well. Lines something like Boeser-Schmaltz-Gersich, Caggs-Johnson-Wilkie, Chyz-Simo-Pogo like we had before the injuries/illness makes us more potent and deep offensively. That 3rd line could really do some damage with speed and grit. You could switch Pogo and Wilkie and get similar results. Also, Gardner seems to have played himself into the lineup. Would be interested to see who sits when everyone gets healthy. I've never been big on Sanderson so that would be my choice with JJ-Gardner-Olson on the 4th line.

  9. schlossman did...

I mentioned this to a buddy at the game Saturday night as well. It's the only thing I can think of illness wise and not injury wise that would keep someone out an extended period of time. Not good if this is the case.

  10. Let's hope that Cam Johnson doesn't have flashbacks against Lake Superior from getting yanked against them last year.  He doesn't need to be spectacular, just give us solid goaltending.  If he matches the goaltending from the opposition, most of the time that should be enough, and with our defense.

That is my hope as well that the Defense takes the pressure off him early so he can settle in. I just think he needs to get more game experience and the confidence will come. Hopefully our D can ease him into that.

  11. Terrible news on St. Clair... he just cannot catch a break

Really hurts our depth at forward with only 2 healthy scratches each night. Have to think there would have certainly been room for Murphy in the lineup. Might see poolman move up if need be in the first half.

  12. Thanks for pointing this out!  I forgot to go back and check on that.  They also charged me $89.95 after telling me it would be $81.  Email has been sent to them.

I just noticed I was charged $89.95 as well. Email has been sent to them as well. Thanks for posting. I never would have caught it which is what they are counting on I'm sure.

  13. I believe Mattson wil be playing this year in the USHL.  He is in the all prospects game this year.  If he has a strong USHL season he will be a 1-3 rd draft pick.  If that is the case he'll be here next year.

I am not sure Mattson is playing the full year in the USHL. I think he might just be doing the before and after and will be back with Grand Rapids for the season. I agree though that his draft position may be the deciding factor of when he comes in although a year in the USHL after high school could be very beneficial for him as he could use the extra year to put on some beef.

  14. I knew about Keane via an interview I read this summer. Makes sense for Peski too. Several recruits listed as 2016-17 will be playing a couple years of junior hockey before hitting campus. Will Keane come in next year? I suppose it all depends on whether Schmaltz/Boeser stay. Four seniors this year to likely be replaced by Jost, Bowen, Yon, and Mattson (guessing). How many d-men will be leaving after this year? No seniors on the blue line.

I would think Mattson plays a year in the USHL before coming in. I would guess we pick up another forward or two to come in next year. Possibly the transfer from Maine that was on a visit a few weeks back in which I can't remember his name?

  15. Gregoire calling it a pro career.  IMO that is one kid who left UND too early.

Agreed and you can include his classmate Hextall in there as well. Both should have played their senior season at UND.

  16. Fabbro making visits to five schools.

    Ryan Kennedy@THNRyanKennedy 13m13 minutes ago

In other Penticton Vees news, look for D-man Dante Fabbro (2016 draft) to visit BC, BU, Denver, NoDak and Minnesota soon.

This is where I am hoping Shaw and Berry's experience coaching NHL d-men pays off. Shaw's first real big recruiting test.

  17. More than half? Are you sure lol?

4 Seniors....  Drake, Chyz, Saint, Sanderson

I could only come up with 6 POTENTIAL players that would leave. Some may stay.... Schmaltz, LJ (I think he stays), Pooly (I think he stays), Boeser (stays), Keaton and Stecher....

We have 26 players. This is at most 10 players gone. Not a chance we lose that many.

That being said, we will lose some and they will be significant losses.

LaDue is almost 100% to leave. He was very close to leaving this year.

  18. Doubt it's a tyus jones/okafor type package but maybe something but there could be something to that on a smaller level. Heard one could get into a few more schools.Think fabbro, apologize if that's wrong. I've seen current recruits hashtag nodak at him few times

If berry and co. can land these two with Mitchell Mattson(6"4 190) who's commited from GR. Then wow

I sure hope the addition of Shaw to the staff and Berry at the helm will lead to elite D recruits like Fabbro committing. Seems like we should have a leg up in recruiting elite D with these two D coaches on staff with their NHL coaching experience. Fabbro has been rumored to be interested in Wisconsin along with others as he is the one who could get into more schools.
