Can't disagree with what you're saying at all. The reason the Spartans didn't "steal" the GLI tonight was... drum roll please... they suck. So does MTU and we might want to add the Sioux to that list for this weekend. But... a big reason MSU beat UND and MSU "held" UM to "only" five goals was because of Lerg. He's their "team" in my opinion. You're absolutely right, Michigan showed everyone tonight that the other three teams at the tournament how to get it done this weekend. Let's see if the Sioux learned anything.

From the "For What It's Worth" department... a few of my observations from this weekend: The Sioux seem to: Never get the puck to the net, get a man in there for the rebound, cycle to puck too much, when they get a shot off it's wide or high... some basic foundational hockey stuff. It was frustrating to see such a lack of offense. Defensively they let Eidsness down several times, resulting in some lame goals. I made a point of sitting right next to the Soux bench this afternoon (one of the great things when they don't sell these games out...). Not only did I want to do this because it is a rare but exceptional opportunity for me to see them play live, but I wanted to hear and observe what was going on the bench during the game. I observed some obvious frustration from the team during the game. They had all of the chatter I would expect a bench to have during the game. I tried to catch what the coaches were saying and doing... I did not observe as much "coaching" to the players as I would've expected. Sure there was some but I never heard them "get on" the players at all (I'm sure it happens but I never saw it). I would watch the players on the bench and on the ice and they had the fire in their eyes. I could tell they wanted to play hard and do what needed to be done, but it wasn't clicking for them. There was some angry players coming off the ice... It was very apparent that the coaches and players were more than frustrated/angry after the game. It seems to be a combination of things that is leading to such an unsuccessful season. What exactly it is we may never really know but if they don't get it together soon, this season will end earlier than we would all care for it to. Based on those I've talked with during the weekend at the GLI, there were a lot of shock of how things turned out for the Sioux. Most everyone were expecting a Fighting Sioux/Wolverine match up (as all of us were). They couldn't believe UND lost to MTU. Most commonphrase I heard tonight, "It just ain't their year." That probably sums it all up there. However; win or lose (rather win...) it was a thrill for me to watch the Sioux live. It may seem like the team might be falling on hard times and everyone is less than thrilled and very ticked off but come on... admit it, we all still love our Fighting Sioux! And that is from the "For What It's Worth" department...

While Goon started this thread as humor, it obviously has brought out a lot of serious Hakstol bashing. I don't disagree with some of what is being said and I understand where it's coming from. But... I don't think we have reached the point of firing Hakstol (I know... not everyone is saying it or if they are, really want/expect it). Spartan fans were calling for Comley's head then he coaches them to a National Championship. Now look at them... Of course, we shouldn't hold up the Sioux to MSU or even other teams as examples to follow or how we should expect the Fighting Sioux program to be. We ALL expect EXCELLENCE in the UND program and anything less seems to be a failure. But every team will experience failure at some point or other. Seems the Sioux are experiencing it now. It might be too late to turn it around for this season but Hakstol is my coach. It's got to get much worse before I call for his head. And that is my 1.5 cents worth... Thanks for listening.

I was at the GLI this weekend and I think Redwing 77 was correct when he earlier mentioned Lerg as one of the keys to beating MSU. While the Sioux seemingly "sucked" in a lot of areas, they couldn't seem to get past Lerg. He's the only reason (as far as I what I watched tonight) MSU kept it to 5 - 1. When I left with 7 minutes left in the title game, UM already had 45+ SOG. MSU's defense let Lerg down a number of times. Forget the "hot goalie" cliche, but Lerg was key for MSU. Now with all of the other problems the Sioux are having...

I've been to the last five GLIs (which includes this dismal weekend) and what you've experienced is what I've experienced those last five years. Unless UM and MSU face each other, you definetly don't have anything close to a sell-out crowd. There is never much noise unless the Wolverines and Spartans play. Tech always seems to bring there share of fans but it is not large by any means. I don't recall ever seen any invited team in the last five years bring their band. I was asked by several others if North Dakota had a band and if so, why they weren't there. UM always has their alumni band there and MSU has some makings of their pep band or their alumni. About the announcer... I'm not sure who it is but in the past it has always been Bud Lynch, who was the announcer for the Wings. Great guy with a lot of history with the Wings but I thought it was getting embarrassing. at last year's GLI (or was it the CCHA Final 5) he could hardly say the player's names, say the penalties, etc. They ending up bringing in some else in half way through the first game that night and replaced him. I haven't been to a Wings game yet this season but I don't know if he announcing for them any more. Regarding the Joe, well... it is what it is. You get used to it. I had the pleasure a couple of years ago to attend a weekend series at the Ralph and there is no comparison so it's easy to get spoiled I'm sure. The CCHA (or whichever organization puts the College Hockey at the Joe series on) has gotten lamer each year. There's less for the fans other than the games themselves now. With all of that in mind... I hope your first experience stops you from coming again if you have the opportunity... unless you go specifically to a university to catch a game, there's nothing like it (unless for the NCAA regionals). It is what it is and that's all we got

I've been going to the GLI for 4-5 years and I always run into a few Sioux fans and have a chat. It's always great to see fellow Sioux fans there and I've have always gotten great remarks and discussion with other college hockey fans there regarding the North Dakota program. With that in mind, how many SS.Com posters might actually be attending the GLI since UND is playing? It would be nice to meet a those from SS.Com alogn with other fans of the Fighting Sioux. Looking forward to the tournament but I believe it's anybodys game. Even though Tech has a sad record, they seem to play strong at the tournament and give the opposing team a run for it. They took it to U of M at last year's tournament but couldn't pull it out. Michgan always plays strong and will defintely have the home crowd advantage. They may be the team to beat here. MSU is always a contender but this year they are having some real problems even though Jeff Lerg is still a real presence in the net. I'm fully expecting (or at least hoping) to see a strong UND team take it all as they did the last time they were here in 2001. Less than one week to see the Fighting Sioux play live. This is a big treat for me as getting to Grand Forks isn't the easiest thing to do. Last time to see the Sioux play live was at the Lefty McFadden. Can't wait! Go Sioux!

The opening game is actually Michigan versus Michigan Tech at 3:00 PM and the Sioux versus Michigan State at 6:30 PM (well that what they state on my tickets any way).

Great win for the Fighting Sioux! Seemed that the Sioux were finally taking more shots on goal, clearing the puck out/away from their net, doing more things right versus wrong. However; and this is NO knock on Cornell, but even though they were the top defensive team in the nation coming in, were they "WCHA strong?" Is their schedule as strong as the Sioux's? Did Cornell's schedule thus far allow themselves to become the nation's number one defensive team? So... did the Sioux really beat a team as "strong" as say... Minnesota, whoever... I guess I'm a little pessimistic because this is only one game but hey... a win is a win is a win and I'll take it! Lots of players getting their first goal for the season and lots of good things happened. Let's see the team work for another victory tomorrow and show us that stick salute! Go Sioux!!

Sioux PP Goal! Capping it off in a big way!
-
Never give up working on that puck..... Sioux goal! Garman couldn't quite get that goofy puck and works itself in. Sioux 6 to 3!
-
Botched that up... you are correct! 5 - 3...
-
Frattin Goal!!! Sioux 5-3! Cornell changes goalie....
-
Is it just me or are the Sioux actually taking/creating more shots on goal versus endless cycling?
-
Genoway Goal! some production tonight!
-
That's what they have got to do! Nice way to be there!

Seawolves can enjoy this win but the Sioux will carry the last few minutes into tomorrow night's game. I don't think Hakstol will allow his team to play this poorly tomorrow. I'm just debating whether or not to delete this game off my DVR. Not to often I can actually watch the Sioux on my television here and they had to play like they did. I hope they pick it up by the time they come here for the GLI. Tomorrow night is another night.
