  1. Does Jersey really have A LOT of talent offensively?? They have Parise, Zajac, Langenbrunner, and Elias, who I consider to be high end players, and I think a lot of Langenbrunner's is playing with Parise and Zajac. Now, I watch pretty much every Devils game, and what I do know is that their defense is not the same as what it was when they were winning cups. There top guy right now is probably Colin White. So, do they let defense play defense and let the offense role, or is offense expected to pick up more slack due to a weaker defense? Unfortunately for Zach and Travis, I don't see Lemaire changing too much.
  2. Nice little write up on Parise, and the NHL Awards Show in Vegas tomorrow night.
  3. My honest opinion...take fighting out of the game, and the sneaky stickwork rises. It's a lot easier to hide stickwork than it is a fight. Stickwork rises and that's when all out fights occur, because the ref wasn't in position to make the call, and therefore, didn't make the call. Could hockey without fights work? Of course. But it would definitely take an adjustment period. I think if it were to happen today, the next 5 years would result in some very serious fights or players go ballistic like Bertuzzi & McSorley. Unfortunately Dave, you know that the refs don't catch every little thing, and some players would specialize in sneak attacks, causing VERY UNFAMILY LIKE ENTERTAINMENT.

    Blais

Glad to see him back in the college ranks. Still wish he never left North Dakota, but that's way old news!!! Best of luck Deano!!!!
  5. That's probably the same thing for the nickname. Obviously, it must offend some Native Americans. I don't understand how it is offensive, since the University goes above and beyond to make sure they share the rich traditions of Native Americans, but then again, I'm not Native American. If I were, I guess I might find it offensive, I don't know. To get it back on topic, so my post doesn't get moved to the nickname thread ( ), I don't see fighting coming even close to the helmets issues. Lack of helmets could result in serious/deadly injury at any point of the game. From a minor tripping play to a deflected puck, all within the context of the game. As I've stated in prior posts, 9.9 out of 10 players choose to fight, which usually means they can hold their own against their opponent. In a fight, you're expecting punches. On a deflected puck, you're not expecting the puck to hit you in the head. I understand you enjoy the game. One would think though, as much as you oppose fighting, you would have never gave hockey a chance the minute you saw your first fight during a hockey game. I guess I enjoy a good fight here and there...not for the enjoyment of watching one of them getting their head "smashed in" as you might say. I see fighting as a way to turnaround a team when they're playing poorly. I hate seeing the Sioux fight when they've got a lead, but I understand why they do. I definitely don't want my team just having to take it, and not willing to throw a punch back to defend themselves.
  6. And Dave, if the fighting turns you off so much, why did you even become a fan of the game? If I recall correctly, we're basically the same age, which means you probably became a fan of hockey when fighting was present in games even more than it is now. If it was such a turn off to you, wouldn't you turn the channel, and not give two beans about the sport?
  7. Logical answer? Tradition of the game. Hockey's a unique game in that fighting is allowed. Want to break the tradition? Why? Traditions mean nothing? I know you feel differently about the Fighting Sioux name and their rich tradition. Another part of the Fighting Sioux TRADITION is standing up for teammates, and if that means dropping the gloves, they do it. Do I agree with fighting in public? Not at all. (Oh, as for your earlier post where you questioned people just going out to the street to drop them, I live in the south. Down here, you just get shot. ). But fighting in hockey...it's been around since longer than I can remember.
  8. I don't remember exact dates, but it was the Gophers series at the Ralph. I want to say either February 14th or 15th, 1998.
  9. The Blake play was a wild golf swing though...still have it on video, and my remarks were in response to your comments of players not getting injured when wearing appropriate padding. Rules state a player will have control of his stick at all times. He hardly had any control over that swing from the time he let go until impact. No penatly was called on the play. Did I mind as a Sioux fan? Absolutely not. As a hockey fan...he probably should have been ejected from the game. Refs missed it completely, but the Gopher player had the puck and Blake was the only other play in the screens view, so the refs should have caught it. As for the fighting, if you're watching a game on TV, turn the channel. You know typically how long a fight lasts. If you're at the game, run to the concessions. Sure you might get pegged in the head for getting in another fans way, but you're not bound to watch it. Close your eyes. Unfortunately for you, it's part of the game with a penalty assessed. Not sure what else to tell you.
  10. Yet in a fight, 9.9 out of 10 times, both players agree to fight, thus they know what they're getting themselves into. Over the years, I've seen numerous players sustain injuries from stick work, and what seem to be an unintentional injury. 1998, Jason Blake skates hard to the corner and slashes his stick down, in what looks like he's just trying to knock the puck away from the Gopher player. Hits the Gopher in the hand, and if I recall correctly, broke some fingers. Yet the hand was padded with the glove. Numerous more incidents like this. If a player doesn't agree with fighting, they choose not to fight! Don't say you'll go with someone, and then skate away after they've dropped the gloves. So, since you would choose not to fight, I'm sure you would be complaining your a$$ off if you got speared by an opposing player. Yes Dave, fighting is dangerous, but the guys who fight choose to fight, thus they know the risk they put on the line. Call it a neanderthal act, which it may be, but it's a choice they make. Happens all the time in the real world too. Fighting isn't allowed in basketball or football, but they still happen. Personally, I think the basketball players look like a bunch of school girls swinging away with slaps. You choose not to fight. I would be right beside you not fighting. My choice. But who am I to say that they can't fight. It's their choice and they'll suffer whatever consequences for their actions.
  11. I think that's a testament to love of the game. Yes, I'm sure he's aware he'll never make it to the NHL (maybe still have hopes somewhere in the back of his head, but I'm sure he's become a realist), but why not get paid to play a game you've loved to play since you were a kid. I'm sure they don't get paid that great at that level, but you're still getting paid to play what you truly love to do. And he's not working a 9 to 5, 8 to 4, 7 to 3, whatever schedule the rest of us work (okay...the rest of us when it's not summer break...best part of teaching....June and July! ).
  12. Yeah, I knew I had heard something about the granite flooring not having to go, but I thought that was due to the high cost it would require to replace it.
  13. Here's a question regarding the nickname...not sure of the answer. If/when the name changes, is UND required to change the names on Championship Banners that were won when we were the Fighting Sioux?
  14. Bet you would if it was your knee!
  15. I'm not going to say which team will win between the Penguins and Carolina, but if Carolina goes to the Cup Finals, I won't be one bit surprised. They're playing team hockey right now...the key ingredient for a Cup run. I was mad when they beat out the Devils, but wanted them to beat the Bruins. Don't think the Hawks can hang with Detroit (hope the Hawks sweep them in 4, but I highly doubt that), so I'm pulling for Bayda and the 'Canes.
  16. Anyone who didn't watch the Jersey/Hurricanes series is now thinking maybe the Hurricanes have a shot, with this series against the Bruins. As in playoff college hockey, all that matters after making the playoffs, is the kind of hockey you're playing in the playoffs.

    Blais

With defense to a few of Blais's teams (though not an excuse)...'98 team lost to Michigan in the regional in Michigan (not a big surprise), and '04 team lost to Denver in the regionals in Colorado. Granted, in '04, the Sioux team outplayed them the entire game, and had a lot of tough breaks, and I'm still not over that damn loss! How many posts did we hit? That team had NC written all over it.
  18. I would gladly share my hockey archive's with Sioux Hab-it or any other Sioux fan. This is a Sioux hockey forum, and if another fan wants footage I have...regardless of disagreements I may have had with them in the past, I'll still share my archives. For you to "blacklist" people because of their comments shows your ignorance. And I would share my footage for free, or for the cost of DVDs/shipping, which is much more than you did for me back in 2005 Dave, charging me $45 for 3 DVDs. Legalities of that are questionable but I wanted the games, as I'm a Sioux fan.
  19. Any team who plays physical against the Devils has a good chance at beating them. With that said, the Canes haven't been that physical against them, though their 1st win, they dominated the game and deserved to win. The 2nd win...Devils came on strong in the last half of the game, and the Canes got a lucky bounce with .02 seconds left. Devils should win this series, but if the Canes pick up the physical game, they could easily win it.
  20. Ryan Bayda scores his 2nd goal of the playoffs, as the Hurricanes are taking it to the Devils early on, 2-0.
  21. Zajac scores the GWG in OT in tonight's Devils/Hurricanes game.
  22. Parise puts in his 3rd of the playoffs. Ryan Bayda comes back with a goal the next shift. His first career playoff goal. 1-1 game right now.
  23. Parise just scores his 2nd of the playoffs on a nice tip in...happened right after a goal of his was disallowed for being hit in with a high stick, which was a valid call.
  24. I don't think Comcast has that great of HD. I notice the higher quality more when watching football than with hockey. Dish was pretty good though.

Fargo fans should be sporting a sign after every victory that states, "The power of The Force has stopped you, you hosers!"
