Jost’s departure clearly caught them off guard. And the freshmen have been inconsistent as expected.

Yep.  Seems like we were a little less prepared for the early departures than in years past.

The easy solution would be to over-recruit like some teams, but then we wouldn't be able to rip on them for it, so....

I'm very likely reading too much into this, but during his mid game interview, Wolanin made mention of Omaha being a hard working team "regardless of their skill level."  That struck me as a bit condescending to Omaha, and made me wonder if there's some sort of belief that the boys can just show up and win on their perceived talent. That's certainly not the case with this team!

Then again, I'm probably nitpicking, but I'm trying to understand why they seemed so...as Ben Holden put it...disinterested.

  3. We seem to go though this every season. The staff tends to build from the net out, so we generally have issues scoring in the first half of the season. As the guys improve on and learn the details of the defensive side, they start to open it up a bit in the second half.

It's a heck of a lot harder to fix a leaky defense and win games in February and March.

  4. I've always seen our PP "struggles" as a result of the types of players we recruit. We've always had kids who are good to great two-way players...not the flashy ice-wipers who rack up points in the PP.  Our PK is a direct beneficiary of that. Although we don't clip at a steady 30% on the PP, our PK is often a strength. Overall, our special teams grade out pretty well.

Bad bad game.  We were obviously much better.  Upperclassmen need to pick it up. I’ve heard 19 is a lock to leave, at this point that is shocking.

My 17 year old daughter mentioned 19...........and he's complete lack of productivity last night. He was next to invisible.

The A is a very tough league.  Both him and 14 have to be more productive. At this point I’m wondering why 14 is on the PP. He definitely deserves a very long leash but he has 4 points this year.

You guys beat me to it. 19, 14, and 25 simply need to be better. We've managed to get by on defense and newcomer scoring, but the supposed big knockers better start knocking.

  6. I thought they started a tad slow, but really picked it up after the first. I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt being a mere two weeks in and on a long road trip. It's not like they didn't learn anything last night, and if they (and we) trust the process they'll be fine.

I would've liked to see a PPG or at least less perimeter play and more of an effort to get the puck down low.

The 5 on 3 PK with the game on the line  was a pretty big moment and they passed that test.  AA had all the momentum after tying the game just minutes before.

Buxton went through what a lot of guys do....I watched Jackie Bradley Jr. of the Red Sox really struggle, especially at the plate, his first two years.  Last year he hit 26 home runs and had a career high for batting average.  Buxton appears to have found his stride and looks comfortable in the batters box.  I think they finally quit messing with his swing and let him do what works for him...as far as defense goes, the guy is lights out.

They "quit messing with his swing?"  The guy used to have a huge leg kick/stride that they've tamed considerably. He's now able to stay back and not flail at breaking balls like he used to.  I'd say a lot of the changes they've asked him to make are now paying dividends.  He's been damn fun to watch!

So if Denver, UMD, St Cloud State, and North Dakota were all in the NCHC Frozen Face-Off at the Xcel Energy Center, it wouldn't be quite the same because the jersey patches say NCHC on them instead of WCHA?  There were several years of no Gophers at the Final Five and the tournament didn't miss a beat.

As much as it pains me to say it....you can't ignore the contribution the Gopher fans made toward the atmosphere of the tourney. A good chunk of them still showed up even though their team wasn't there.
