Actually, this year they are starting a fan promotion: There will be a vote on what two teams SHOULD have made it to the Frozen Four but didn't. It will be a college hockey version of the NIT.

Last night on CNN, Lou Dobbs blasted the NCAA for its nickname ruling. He said basically that there are much bigger issues than this silly one for the NCAA to tackle, but why would they do that when they haven't in the past. He ended his segment with 3 quotes on the issue, one was from what he said was a UND rep that said "we still don't know what their criteria is". Lou mentioned the "Fighting Sioux" nickname as well.

I also wonder why there has been little to no advertising. With the game on Labor Day weekend, i suppose there will be a lower number of people at the game. I have 3 friends coming up from the cities going with me.

I don't think UND is big enough for the NCAA to cave. I hope I'm wrong.

Look like roller hockey league jerseys to me. Yuck!

There have been times in the past that we have all questioned Dr. Kupchella, I think we found out today how he really feels about UND.

I am glad you started a new thread for this topic. I agree that Dr. Kupchella's letter sounds like what we have all been saying to one another and to friends in discussion of this matter. I am glad we have him as a voice that the NCAA will have to listen and respond to.

As mentioned above, no, I don't know everything there is to do with Native Americans, namely the Sioux nation. But, everything I do know has been taught to me because of UND. Is this sad, perhaps, but it is the truth. Yes, I understand the ceremonies at hockey games are only a small part of the Sioux culture, but at least I have seen that part. Without UND having the Sioux name, I, and most everybody around here would know NOTHING about Native American culture.

Knowthefacts: Why haven't you answered the question of why you don't focus on things that would DIRECTLY HELP Native Americans? I.e. poverty, crime, drug and alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy rates both on and off the reservation? Don't evade. Please answer the question.

There is no football homecoming because it is sexist. I hear RR is going to drop the Roughrider name due to a brand of condom being named the same and the associated immorality issues. Actually, I have never heard of this before either. Pretty sad.

I enjoy seeing the dancing/drum ceremonies at hockey games. With the ruling, will these no longer be conducted? Are they what the NCAA deems racist? I don't know what is appropriate/inappropriate anymore. I guess I will just wait for the NCAA to tell me what is right and wrong. Let me say, the dances were very interesting and I would like to see them continued as they help teach me and some young relatives of mine about another culture. As the kids said, they are just "cool"!

One more thing GK/Knowthefacts: How in the world can you speak for an entire nation of people? What do you say about the polls that state the majority of Native Americans are okay with the Sioux name? What about those who say it honors the tribe? Are they wrong?

GrahamKracker/Knowthefacts: Why don't you focus your energy on something that would directly HELP Native Americans? For example, why not focus on poverty, crime, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy rates, etc on the reservations and in other areas of the state? Why not focus on Tribal leaders collecting huge sums of money from casinos/gaming and other members of the tribe living in absolute poverty? You trying to get a college name changed to help Native Americans is like me trying to sell lemonade for 10 cents a cup in an effort to make a million dollars. Focus on the issues that matter... please.

With the ruling today, can UND host the first few rounds of the playoffs like in past years?

That article by Ray Ratto hits the nail on the head...how frustrating this "Halfway stance" of the NCAA is.

Here is a quote: "The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin references in their intercollegiate athletics programs," said NCAA President Myles Brand. How in the world is this decision limited to Native American nicknames? What about the various other ethnic references such as "Fighting Irish" I am sure there are other countless examples, but you never hear about them. This decision makes no sense. Just another reason I hate the NCAA.

Will UND be on the list of "offensive"? I assume so. Is there any way of challenging this decision?

I see UND stuff everywhere I go. Just the other day, I was at a mall in the cities area with my sioux hat on, a couple kids passed by and said "SIOUXXXXX", they also had Sioux gear on. Doesn't surprise me where we are on that list.
