  1. I have an idea!  Lets talk about South Dakota st or portland st, maybe Alabama or even mankato instead.  Please

South Dakota st looks to return some nice talent.  I can see them being 7-4ish with a first round out in playoffs.

I'm not sure Portland st will be in contention for the big sky title next year.  No more sneaking up on anyone and they lose some important pieces.

    Alabama will be Alabama.

    mankato??? No clue

anyone else want join in on sioux sports to talk about these teams.....All. The.  Time!!!??

So anyway, UND in 2016 ....

What will likely be our biggest Stregths and Weaknesses?

Strength: Run game, defense (front 7)

Weaknesses: Passing game (potential, but a lot to prove), defense (secondary, you and potential, but a lot to prove)

    thoughts?

    I'm in agreeance with you.

Strengths: punting game, kicking game,  defensive front 7, by game 4ish 5ish the o line will hopefully be a strength and the running game will flourish.

Weaknesses: punt and kickoff coverage, secondary is still very young but have a lot of talent so looking for a much better results and passing game.

Very excited to see the experience factor this year as there is massive  amounts of returning players everywhere.   The o oline has the most holes to fill and are short on numbers, but definitely not short on talent.

Our front 7 will be incredible this  year.  Thy are deep, talented and now have the experience.  Can't wait for them and the linebackers to compliment each other.

Excited!!  I see a 9-2 record barring injuries.  On the injury front,  Und is now in year three and with this last recruiting class they are able to have the next man up motto and be assured a little better results and the coaching staff has recruiting very well.  Young and talented.

However, the 2016 Potato Bowl in Grand Forks against the Yotes will be a fun one. Not to mention, Bubba will be facing his old UMD boss in Bob Nielson and the Big Sky-MVFC clashes are always fun. Should be a good game and, of course, hopefully Bubba Blitz terrorizes USD's QB all day long.

That's a gaurantee!!  Combine a loaded and talented d line thats experienced with quick aggressive linebackers, you will get a heavy dose of blitzkrieg.  Bring the pain

    What are you getting at?

Her post was full of static and came across as moo talk.  If i had to a stab at it,  it's sounds like she meant to say that when Grady was installed as a starter (week 7) and when the entire o line had finally started to gel that they were pushing d lines back, opening up lanes for buses to drive through.  That's what I get it out of it . And shes right.

Sure there's missed talent but you usually only get 1 or 2 a class.  Again I'll take a recruit that has multiple offers any day of the week and be more right on hitting a home run than one that has none.

Well good for you.  Bye bye

According to NFL.com, 16 of the 32 first round draft choices last year were 3 stars coming out of high school. There was one 2 star first rounder and zero 1 or 0 star recruits in the first round. (I don't know which service provided the star rankings.)

To to say that star rankings are inaccurate is, well, accurate. But to say that zero star recruits have about the same potential as 3 and 2 star recruits is not supported by the facts.

NDSU's roster has players that across the board have higher rated star players than UND. They thrashed us and won the national championship again.

We can come up with isolated examples of 5 stars amounting to nothing and 0 stars becoming NFL Hall of Famers. But statistically rating services are more right than wrong, and more talent beats less talent more often than not. Give me higher rated players every day of the week.

Not talking nfl, talking fcs.  Santiago was an all American as a true freshman in the fcs, the division und plays in.  He had zero stars and zero other fcs offers.  Grady started week 7, was a lock for all American and had zero stars and zero other fcs offers.  In other words,  there is plenty of "hidden" talented recruits that can be gems, especially in the northern Midwest section of the U.S.

Sure it's nice to beat out a some fcs or maybe fbs for recruits but in reality it means squat.  It's a monkey see monkey do situation.  N Iowa offers some kid a scholly, now you have illinois st offering, sdsu offers , ndsu offers, Toledo , wyoming  and at the end some fbs offers a pwo.  It's just a domino effect.   If wisc st Nw offered a kid a scholly, pretty sure the offers wouldnt start flooding his way,  nor would his rival stars. But if Alabama offered the same kid before he was known, the offers and rival stars would fly through he roof .  Monkey see monkey do

Again, und plays in the fcs and are are doing a great job of finding talent for their diversion.  They have lacked depth and to a certain extent experience.  Now in year three, bubba and crew are starting to address the depth situation which is an absolute must to compete for a title.

Thanks, all, for returning with me to that beautiful time in UND lore!   The point being that I sense the trajectory is needling upward for us toward another era of success in multiple sports. And as for football, Bubba and staff seem to be bringing in the right recruits to lead us back to the Promise Land!  Go UND!

Bubba had seen und football at its highest.  He knows we as fans have been starving for much to long and he shares the same compassion.  Bubba has a will to win that is contagious and bleeds Kelley green.  He wants to be here and does things the right way and more importantly the moral way.  Great progress last and now the excitement and expectations leading into next year are very high.  Proud to have him leading the team!!

It's hard to say. Such a tough position to geuss which one is going to catch on the quickest. Athleticism only gets you so far. You can get a guy that can fly down the line and pull on a sweep but he better be able to know what linebacker he needs to pick up on a blitz or else he's better off on the bench. Helgren certainly has the physical attributes to take that step though.

I love Helgren, buts he's asking about redshirt freshman not true freshman.

I also like carl engwall as he displayed the nasty.  He has a mean streak to go along with his first step and burst.  The d line will be fantastic for years to come!

I'd say Holm, perhaps Canady, one of the OL will get pulled by necessity and Cloyd if an injury occurs at TE.

Redshirts.   I would say bennet.  He looks very athletic and ready.

Again, what about Bolinski makes you believe he won't pan out?  The fact they he doesn't have a scholarship, is from ND, what is it?

He never mentioned he won't pan out.  I'm in agreeance with him, if the coaching staff didn't offer him a scholly you can take that as the staff saying, " we like you buuuuut just not that much!" A scholarship player is a "target" as where a pwo is a prove yourself.

I believe it's been noted numerous times here about the unknowns at the qb position and I also believe most of us, considering what happened when Studsrud went down last year, are on pins and needles with the unknowns, most notably heidlebaugh.

The qb position is quite possibly the important position in football.  I believe most teams should recruit a qb every other year at a minimum.  Every team has different needs at different times but I truly believe you can't have enough quality qbs on a roster

At the same time, Bubba and crew  know what they have and are obviously very confident in what they have, so I'm on board with that.

    Can't wait for tomorrow!!!!

Carson Wentz is a fantastic QB and a North Dakota kid who will be a 1st round draft pick.  Wish we would have landed him out of high school.

Doesn't mean myself or anyone has to cheer for him just because he's from ND.  Kind of like cheering for ndsu athletics right?  Just something I don't do, sorry.

I don't wish him ill-will and I think he will do just fine, but just because it's good for ndsu, doesnt mean it has to be good for UND too.  In fact, it's NOT good for UND.

It has nothing to do with "butthurt".

It has everything to do with my loyalty and pride to UND. Hope you can respect that?

A post of perfection!!!  Well done!

  12. There's no question that wentz is talented. His measurements are very impressive:  6'6" 230 pds.  His athleticism is very much above average considering his size. He's a smart kid and very humbled from everything I've heard.  His work ethic is not questioned.  Big arm.  If he can get drafted by a team with a scheme that fits him best, I could see him excelling.  My only question in him is his decision making.  I don't follow ndsu so I have no idea how he's looked in games.  Only seen 3 qtrs of him vs und.

I think we can agree that having to rely on incoming freshmen for 2 or even 3 deep depth is not ideal (unless there is a special talent like Grady).  Here's hoping for OL health in 2016.

Correct!  The health of the line is very detrimental to this team.  We have some nice talent in place but extremely thin.  Losing any starter next year will be magnified a thousand fold.  And yes, the Grady loss is just massive!

Interesting that we saw no FBS dropdowns, I though they might go after 1 or 2.

Not complaining, I like that the coaches are going out and getting their own guys, just thought they might try to bring in a seasoned play to help fill in the OL with our graduates and early losses.

Not saying drop downs are a bad thing, because we've had a few good ones, buts it's a lot better when the coaching staff has the time to develop a player into their system while adding in the experience factor. Transfers are needed for immediate help not developing. I believe successful programs recruit senior high schoolers and then maybe an occasional juco or transfer.  Again, not bashing just my opinion.

Cieslak and Harris have such a bright future on d that I wouldn't want to waste them moving to OL and wasting time developing them.

Completely agree.  Maybe greer to o line?

Danny Freund tweeted a link to his Instagram picture today of where he is recruiting. It was a picture of his hand pointing at an area of Wisconsin. The area looked like where Waukesha is which is where Blount is from. Just saying.

    Go get him coach freund!!

I'll be the first to admit I didn't follow recruiting nearly as closely when Muss was in charge, and while he certainly found some great kids, I don't think the talent was even close to as evenly spread as what Bubba and Co is putting on the field.

I'm not sure if it is what he is doing, or the fact that I am just following closer, but whether it is during a game week, or waiting for more recruiting information, I am constantly excited to see what this team is doing.

I know you don't want to always analyze a player, based on who else is recruiting him. I think Bubba made that abundantly clear this past season; and proved why with a guy like Santiago. Though, it is nice to see that some of the players you are getting, are also getting big interest from other programs. Especially regional programs, because it means we are getting a little more respect, and getting guys that would have otherwise gone to a SDSU or a USD or sometimes even an NDSU. Pretty awesome to see.

Just pulled this off the Wiki, but I think it definitely speaks to the improvement of the program to start winning somenot all, of the recruiting battles.

OG Bennett Helgren, 6'6”, 285, 5.1, Edina (Edina), MN (2 Star - Scout & 247) Had offers from SDSU & USD

LB Dijon Murray, 6'1”, 225, 4.4, New Orleans (NMMI), LA Has signed. Had offers from SIU & Colgate

LB Jaxson Turner, 6'2“, 200, 4.6, Esko (Esko), MN (2 Star - 247) Had offer from WIU

S Jordan Canady, 6'2 175, 4.6, New Berlin (Eisenhower), WI PWO offer from Wisconsin

S Dre Randolph, 6'1”, 190, Indianapolis (Lawrence Central) IN Had offers from Army & Navy

CB Evan Holm, 6', 170, 4.5, Edina (Edina), MN (2 Star - 247) Had offers from USD & SDSU

CB Torrey Hunt, 6', 190, 4.4, Madison (Naval Prep Academy), AL Had offers from TN Tech & ID St

Mussman was more concerned about skilled positions and not the bigs.  It starts in the trenches and bubba knows that.  Bubba has recruited accordingly and so far it's paying dividends.

Also, bubba is recruiting locally a hell of a lot better them mussman
