Mentioned before but he is the one that I wouldn’t mind if und “has” to hire a und connection. Extremely smart guy. Football demeanor. But again….wish und would step away from the connection. There are plenty of legit coordinators or lower level head coaches that this would be an upgrade for.

This is probably a naive take. Bubba like everyone had strengths and weaknesses. The perceived weaknesses I saw (excitement, confidence) were so glaring when it came to recruiting and “when something went wrong” in the game. That look we all know when they showed him was crazy. Might not be a coach that instilled less confidence. Road games. Somebody to say enough. There clearly are strengths too. Those will be utilized in the new position. Even recruiting, have him around the players and parents, he just cannot be the guy making the offer in the room. Which of course he won’t be anymore.
I’m good with whatever. I’ll spin it either way. MAYBE, someone like Schmidt can be the ultimate win / win.
Won’t take the card away but having a familiar gobc back in the club is renewing the same imo. Outside influence will have a different view or take. IMO.
Try something new from an outside source as und D1 days have been very underwhelming.

One more added point. If Eric is hired…half of the coaches are still here from when he left. Will he retain all of them ? They are part of the gobc.

Any und tie hire brings me the least amount of excitement. Wish them the best but it comes across as another easy/lazy hire for und. I don’t see much change. Same schemes, same culture…etc. Add to it …bubba is still around. Gobc still intact. His influence with an old coordinator remains solid.

I have looked into his career and bio. Looked at results. Watched how he conducted himself and interacted with players and media. This dude is a winner!
When looking over the potential candidates he was #1 for me. Posted couple days ago he is my #1 choice. He has two decades of results. 82% win percentage. Winners win regardless of level …aka DeBoer
If he truly is a candidate and is interested in the job …und needs to do whatever they can to get this guy. 6 time national coach. Being coach of the year 6 times means you’re doing something right. Being coach of the year 6 times means you’re not satisfied with a 6-6 or 7-5. Being a 6 time coach of the year is exactly what und needs

After sifting through some of the possibilities for the next coach ….really like Caruso. Has proven track record as head coach. At 50 …he knows how to relate to players yet experienced enough for in game decision making. If he can turn und into a fcs power he still has time to move onto something better or simply ride it out to retirement if he chooses. Plus I like the idea he and Freuchte have a relationship. Keep the OC here. Keeps some familiarity with the players that has very little bubba influence. Its a win win imo
163-46 (78%) overall. Played in two championship games (That era in D3 was owned by Mount union and Wisconsin whitewater).
Has 6 national coach of the year awards. He’s a winner ! He turned st Thomas around in his first year. They were 2-8 the year before he got there. His first year 7-3.

Can’t say he a defensive minded guy but had Brandon Staley as a D line coach who is the assistant head coach for SF 49ers. Ex head coach for the chargers.

Bubba has und fb so far from removed from football relevancy. When looking at a map it’s very noticeable where the fcs power teams are….SD, ND and Montana. Und is in that circle of power. So then why is und never in the talk for a championship when every other single team that surrounds GF absolutely owns the fcs. Why? Constantly watching these “regional “ teams winning it all is beyond frustrating. If they can we can too.
How that last extension was approved is mind boggling. The one before that was very questionable as well. Yet, here we are stuck with ….”well we can’t change it now …it is what it is ….only way to make change is pony up”. Most every person on this site, at work, family and neighbors were adamant of their displeasure for bubba ball. Been that way for years. So what is it that we saw for years that Chavez couldn’t see? Now we as fans have to pony up because of a decision made internally that has und fb falling way behind all the other surrounding fcs schools?? Please make it make sense
A move needs to happen immediately. Losing the fans and players interest is not the best way to a winning ingredient. Winning cures a lot of problems. Namely recruiting and monetary issues. Recruiting is obvious. Players want to win and winning gets the attention of better recruits. Winning gives you national exposure….TV exposure….etc. For UND and GF ….winning brings in more fans and more fans means more ticket sales, merch, hotels , food...etc. Und CANNOT afford to keep falling behind. We are by far the little brother in the Dakotas and Montana. Und is on the bottom rung locally when it comes to recruiting prospects.
Is the underline correct? Does his new position fall under the alumni umbrella ?

Everything we question on here when it comes to in game decisions all rolls back into bubba and his hard head. He doesn't have the capability to change. In the midst of an embarrassing losing streak he still can’t make a change. Zero! Clueless. We have had years of non change and years of 7-5 and 6-6 play. Consistently stays with whats not working. But the guys were well prepared every week this year so there’s that anyways.

When looking at the fcs and the landscape of it. It’s pretty clear there is perennially four teams that matter. That has been the case for a decade now. Most decent teams move up. I have said it many times but they should adopt the fbs playoff system. Make it a four team or 8 team playoff system. Forget the AQ. The pioneer league teams are on par with a naia team. Yet they get a AQ? Lol. Useless. That’s my opinion of course
Making the playoffs amounts to zero. Und has never advanced themselves in any meaningful matter after making the playoffs. Bubba thinks otherwise . His goal is to make it to the first round of a watered down system and bow out there. He then is happy and rewarded . That kind of mindset is why we are where we are today. Cannot expect anything outside of 7-5 record. Rinse and repeat every year. But as long as the gobc is happy that is all that matters at und.
The bottom 3/4 of the fcs (100ish teams)teams are essentially d2 quality teams. Und is included. With bubba and the quality of recruits und would never win a D2 championship. Not sure they would sniff the semis actually.
With bubba und will keep falling

Just when you thought being 3rd or 4th best football program in the Dakotas perennially for over a decade couldn’t get any worse, it now has. No expectations to be great; a very similar and sad ongoing narrative indeed.
Same here. Had tickets for decades even through the muss mess. Haven’t purchased tickets the last years. Just went to a couple early season games and left at halftime due to combination of play and the ridiculous catwalk seating BS. Leaned on that catwalk rail since the place opened. Opposing players had the joy of listening to us all dame. Now…. It’s just deflating.
Years ago …on any given Saturday we could have 20”ish” people grouped up. Lost a bunch 5 years ago and into covid. Two more guys said they won’t be renewing today. That leaves two ticket holders out of group as of today.
I am an absolute und football addict …so it hurts not going and supporting the players. Attended a few spring and fall practices to see up close what kind of talent they will have. But I will say it’s been more relaxing on Saturday’s . Don’t have to witness the lostness of bubba. Since covid I had been screaming more at him than the opposing team. Wasn’t and isn’t fun. Decided to get away and go back when he’s gone. Or if he will ever be gone . See how many more extensions Chavez has in store for him.
I am beyond frustrated at und “leadership” for athletics. Und has fallen so far behind all rival schools in every sport.
I was hoping when I visited Siouxsports today I would find great news. Nope. Same ol same ol.

And that right there is und football in a nutshell. Romfro is not a D1 QB. However Bubbas hard head will continually roll with his/their decision and attempt ZERO changes even in losing streaks. Zero changes!! Why change when it’s not working !? If you really don’t think about it …it makes sense.

Agreed.
There is nothing exciting for me on this hire. Hope he succeeds but I see no culture change. Eric brings toughness and intenseness thats needed in the football world…..but eh. Such a typical und hire. Blah.
Eric will be reunited to the constant Joel, Shawn, Travis and Carl. Will he retain any of the coaches (buddies) that have high contributions to a yearly average 6.0 W -5.1 L team? 54%. This program needs a complete overhaul. Time to start with a blank canvas.
