  1. I thought this was a football forum. Why do people keep bringing up hockey?

Because the Fargo Forum insisted on comparing football and hockey.

My question for Bison FB fans:

If your FB program is so great, why the need to compare it to a niche sport that nobody outside of Grand Forks cares about?

  2. Is it more trouble than it's worth to go after a mascot/nickname that a professional sports team already uses in regards to approval/royalties/etc?

I can't claim definitive knowledge, but it would seem reasonable to assume.

Create your own unique moniker, logo, image and your ownership rights would seem easier to establish and claim and own.

  3. Think about this:

The University of North Dakota mens hockey team is being "busted on" for just accomplishing ...

    - a national championship game lost in OT

    - another national championship game appearance

    - four other Frozen Four appearances (national semi-finalist)

    - a Broadmoor Trophy three-in-a-row (never done before), plus another in 2006

    - four MacNaughton Cups

    - a Hobey Baker winner

... in just the last 12 seasons. (Go back 13 and you have a National Championship and another Broadmoor.)

That's fifty years for some college programs. Other college programs can't claim even parts of that.

Yeah, UND Hockey: the bar is set pretty high.

  4. I don't understand the love for the name Tsunami (other than shortening it to Tsu). North Dakota is in the center of the continent. Tsunamis can't relate.

    It's simply phonetic love.

  5. Mods sorry if the image is too much.. I can delete it you like

As one of the moderators, there's nothing wrong with anything that you posted.

And I'm pretty confident the others and the Admin would agree.

Heck, maybe the Admin should show you how to use the Wiki feature of the board for analyses like that. :)

  6. The new nickname needs to be something inspiring, and something that draws admiration and respect. I think picking RoughRiders would make it easier (not easy, just easier) to ease the pain of leaving Fighting Sioux in the past.

North Dakotans disagree on a lot of things. Support for those brave enough to put their lives on the line to defend our freedom is as close to unanimous as it gets.

And that's the angle you play up with "Rough Riders" (that and TR's time in ND). It makes "Military Appreciation Day" more important at UND.

  7. Sica ur next....as for the reapers what would your logo look like? a scythe or a drone?

The green jerseys would be an acknowledgement of the agrarian history. Probably a scythe motif.

The home white jerseys would be a salute to the local folks (GFAFB and aviation): an MQ-9 motif.

The black jerseys? I don't know, maybe something with this theme? ;)

  8. But I think some other school in Grand Forks might just be using that name already. The whole idea of using Rough Riders should be dropped.

Ames, IA: Iowa State Cyclones, Ames HS Little Cyclones

Ft. Collins, CO: Colorado State Rams, Ft. Collins HS Lambkins*

So don't say it can't work in Grand Forks, ND.

And Rough Riders was put out there by Jesse Taken Alive and Phil Jackson. Thus that side of the aisle regarding the old moniker has given their imprimateur.

*a lambkin is a young sheep (Ram or ewe)

  9. So who is going to broadcast the games? Is there still going to be a UND Sports Network? Maybe I missed something.

Key words and tricky phrases I see in the release:

"It allows us to continue our exceptional coverage in the region on Midcontinent and at the same time the department will benefit financially in a significant way," said University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison. "We've been working hard to find new revenue streams for the program so this is a critical piece to add to the mix. We are also excited about the HD component of the contract."

Midco Sports Network will produce and broadcast ...

    - cash flow

    - High Def TV (in year three of the five, meaning the 2014-15 season)

    - Midco to produce and broadcast (WDAZ had done the production in the past)

  10. Schlossman has tweeted that ...

The Ralph has replaced all of its TVs in the concourse with flat screens.

That's a smart move for them. All those old TVs have to be energy hogs.
