  1. "In addition to the new staff members, I wanted to reward some current guys for their hard work and I've given Josh Kotelnicki the title of assistant head coach and elevated Mike Mannausau to associate head coach," Mussman said.

Not surprised in the least at Mannausau getting the Associate HC title. He's earned it.

    A little surprised at the Assistant HC title for Kotelnicki, but then again, he's done more than enough with the special teams to ... {rest of post blocked by Kotelnicki's special teams unit, heck, they block everything else kicked their way :D }

  2. I was not sure where to post this, but as I was charging a child sexual assault case last night, I noticed the media frenzy around the Penn State University report from Attorney Freeh on PSU's child sexual assault issue. I wonder if PSU athletics takes the hit that is being cried out for by some (death penalty), and how that impacts their ability to compete in the Big Ten, at least in football? If a B10 team can't compete in the major revenue producing sport why keep them in the conference? If that happens, which is a long way down the road, what happens to the Big Ten hockey conference? They would be down to five teams, lose an auto bid and cause another major shake-up in the college hockey world.

You're speculating on something that more than likely won't happen. The NCAA has given the Death Penalty once (SMU). They didn't give it to Miami or USC and probably could have.

As I've said elsewhere, the PSU problems seem to be criminal and civil law. I don't see where PSU has violated any NCAA rules (unless the NCAA can come up with a way to claim "lack of institutional control" violations).

So to your Big Ten concerns I say worry about it when it happens.

One more note: If PSU is capable of this, what ugly skeletons are out there at other schools yet to be found? They won't admit it, but school presidents (the managers of the NCAA) know they're one scandal away from being a pariah like PSU. They'll make a lot of firm sounding statements about "concerns" but will they really drop the hammer knowing it could easily be them next time. How can I say that? They dropped the hammer on SMU, saw how devestating it was to SMU (20 years later they're still recovering), and haven't used that hammer since.

  3. OVER OR UNDER: 70% Freethrow shooting as a team for the season

    Let's expand on this theme:

Minimum 30 attempts during season to be considered --

Best free throw shooter on team over or under 90%

Worst free throw shooter on team over or under 51%

  4. Correct. Unless it is a title 9 thing.

Coaches salaries at UND should rank as follows based upon a combination of the ability to generate revenue and success.

    Men's Hockey

    Football

    Men's Basketball

    Women's Basketball

    Vollyball

    Women's Hockey

As I've said, womens hockey is cheaper than defending against a Title IX lawsuit.

  5. The problem is Congress* and the Federal law called Title IX which mandates schools offer equivalent opportunities for mens and womens sports.

    Call your Congressman.

The other option is to ignore Title IX and be taken to task by the Federal Justice Department. Hint: Womens hockey is cheap compared to that.

    * Title IX is Federal law, not an NCAA rule or policy.

  6. If college athletics programs, sport by sport, had to be fiscally self-sustaining, how many would exist?

I'm guessing a few FB programs, some MBB programs, a couple WBB programs, a couple mens hockey programs, and not much else.

So in all honesty, everything else, 90% or more of college athletics, is a "money pit".

  7. Coach Hakstol's country of birth is Canada. I would imagine that since Hak is married to an American Citizen that he is probably either a Landed Permanent Resident or a USC by now.

I thought I read that Hakstol became an American citizen and now has a US passport.

  8. Nope. Man it must have hurt Terry to write this column. http://terryvandrovec.tumblr.com/

That number for UND is only going to grow. I have heard football season ticket sales had a nice bump this offseason. And hopefully with the women's and men's basketball teams finally being in a conference thier attendance will increase. Also, every women's volleyball game seemed to have more and more people at it last year as the season went a long. Huge number and still a lot of room for improvement, without having to spend any money on new facilities.

I'm thinking Vandrovec got the idea for that article about ticket sales and revenues from reading ... this thread, specifically the nice work and analysis done by FSSD (posts 69, 70, and beyond).

  9. Honestly reapers is a stupid idea. Too new and trendy sounding.

Seriously? A reaper is a harvester. First it was a person with a scythe; then it was a machine by McCormick. Those built the basis of this state. Today it's a UAV. For all of history it's been the image of the one we'll all meet sooner or later. There's centuries, not "trendy". Ultimately, you don't like the idea because it's something worth a look. ;)

As far a "Flickertails", in today's marketing driven world that won't work, too similar, with the "Midas-touched rodetia" immediatelly to the state's east.

Again, to those that like North Stars, hey consider it, but also consider it's the state motto of Minnesota. (And I do believe the NHL ownership group in Dallas still owns that name.)

As far as Rough Riders, Lt. Col. T. Roosevelt was a "Rough Rider". Who's he? Just the the guy who said, "I would have never been President if not for my time in North Dakota." You may have heard of that guy. There's only a National Park in the state named for him.
