  1. Altru Health System has pledged a $10 million gift to the University of North Dakota through the UND Foundation in support of a sports medicine partnership between Altru and UND. According to UND President Robert Kelley, $9 million will serve as the leadership gift for a new UND Athletics Complex, an indoor practice and competition facility on campus. ... The remaining $1 million is directed to support the replacement of the football turf at the Alerus Center.

And that explains the Altru logo on the floor of The Al.

  2. "According to UND President Robert Kelley, $9 million will serve as the leadership gift for a new UND Athletics Complex, an indoor practice and competition facility on campus."

Does the phrase "leadership gift" imply we may be seeing the Altru name on that building?

  3. Leaving the NCAA would be very complicated for the major schools, I don't see it happening. That said I think this three tier idea could come to fruition if the major schools want it to happen enough.

What would be so complicated? "Hi, we're leaving." They'd have a new organization and new bylaws (and television deals) in place in no time. Why? There's money to be made by them.

I was skeptical of "three tiers" until I read what Saban and Benson said recently. Now I believe we may see it as soon as 2014 (new playoff).

  4. What's the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference saying?

''The goal of the Sun Belt right now is to be the best of the quote, 'below the line conferences,''' Benson said in a recent interview. ''There's going to be five (conferences) above the line and five below the line. The Sun Belt's goal is going to be to compete with those other conferences.''

Gee, it sounds like Benson (SBC commish) has heard of something like Saban's plan (top 70 or so). Where else would this "below the line" conferences statement come from?

    My guess?

Above the line: SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12*, Big East*

Below the line: Sun Belt, MAC, C-USA, Mountain West, WAC (RIP)

So there's the "third tier" (middle tier) of Division I football de facto forming. And if Benson is looking to limit "body bag" games that'll affect budgets (see article) so don't be surprised if budget issues don't lead to "reduction in scholarship limits" discussions later.

*I could see the Big East pilaged by the others in the coming days and the BE remnants ending up "below the line" or the Big Twelve folding up shop with the remnants going to the other "above the line" conferences.

  5. Hurd, we have de facto three tiers today:

    FBS,

    FCS (with scholarships)

FCS (no scholarships and the schools that don't play for FCS playoffs)

What I see under Saban's plan:

The top 70 or so (with N > 85 scholarships and mandatory cash stipends to players)

The next 70 or so (with something like 75 scholarships, to merge FBS and FCS, and no stipends)

The bottom run (no scholarships and the schools that don't play for FCS playoffs)

  6. In your opinion, the jersery should be loose, ala the Dorsett image.

In the opinion of today's players, and apparel makers, it should be tight and form-fitted.

They guys who wear them win the opinion battle.

  7. Back in the days of the "tear-away jersey" I remember that it looked like backs (Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas in particular) had stuff waiving in the wind, trailing behind them. Those jerseys were loose and there was a lot to grab onto in the back of the jersey. But when you grabbed it ... poof! ... tear-away and the back is gone. When the tear-aways were outlawed they went with the same cut for a while. But they changed to a tighter cut in the lower back shortly thereafter. Now why was that? Just coincidence?

  8. Just saw the tweet: Captains and alternates will be announced later today.

    My predictions:

C - MacWilliam (too many will pick Knight)

    A - Knight

    A - Rowney

and if they go with a third A I'm going darkhorse ... The General.

Yeah, I left Kristo out of the mix. Not sure why.

  9. Since this is as likely as anything:

The Y Line: Rowney, Pattyn, Chyzyk

The Double-Letter Lines: MacMillan, MacMillan, and O'Donnell; Caggliua, Rodwell, Gaarder. (Pattyn is already on the Y Line.)

    OK, now I'm stretching:

Special Ks: Knight, Kristo, and Parks (hey, there's a K in Parks)

That leaves Grimaldi, Sanderson, and St. Clair. Not sure what to go with there.

  10. I think we'll see three tiers of Division I football shortly after the new playoff starts in 2014. I think it'll be today's top 64 (maybe up to 80) FBS teams at the top-most level. Next you'll have the rest of today's FBS and the top part of FCS (Big Sky, CAA, MVFC) at a new mid-level. Then you'll have the non-scholarships and the schools that don't do max allowable scholarships at a lowest level in DI.

Given there are about 124 FBS and 122 FCS today, it'll probably split out about 64 to 72 at the highest, then 96 or so, then the rest (roughly about 80).

I wish Nick Saban would give me credit next time he uses my ideas. ;):D

"But I think, eventually in college football, we're going to have to get to where there's 60 or 70 teams in this Division I, whatever you want to call it. And these teams need to be playing each other." Saban said.
