2022-23 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
The Sicatoka replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Allow me a wildly optimistic take: The staff knows they've been fading late in seasons recently so they are intentionally not hammering down early in the season to leave more in the tank come March. It'd be a dangerous balance with little margin for error but large potential payoff. -
People want to see the home team win. (It's always nice when the home team wins.) Folks showed for ACU expecting a win; SDSU wasn't the same expectation.

It took Hak a while to figure that out. I believe "Judy's" was the fulcrum point. You'd think a more chronologically senior person (with kids older than his players) would have that figured out by now. -

What I saw that really disturbed me last weekend was the little stuff: "Shorting" passes "Shorting" clears It's like sticks were made of soft pasta or the puck weighed 500 pounds. And then the other mistakes, like not taking the easy clear or trying to make one more pass instead of firing. -

The minutes accumulated on those two this far is scary. The each are close to 30 minutes per game (when available). I worried going into last weekend that "no Frisch" would exposed the defense even more than it has been. Sadly, it happened. -
Nope. But I so enjoyed walking past other halls and seeing cats sitting in windows.

I was going to bring up the case study but you beat me to it.

My only knock on what Deion told CU? It should've been closed doors no cameras.

I believe Colorado is a rung on Deion's ladder. He wants a P2 job.

They'll take it to three games, only to give up six unanswered in game three. -
Never get between PrimeTime and a camera ...

You recall correctly. That laundry room renovation is how easts got private suites. My favorite was the combo of Friday post-buck-pitchers, Burger King (where to eat thread!) foil wrappers, and the microwave oven. I swear I was on first-name basis with half the Columbia Road fire station crews.
-
Liked Squires also, Wilky didn't measure up so not worth the trudge. During my time at UND Walsh RAs had single rooms (and the east wings had private suites) but to my observation most had a < ahem > "room mate".

For two guys with power forward builds, I've never seen two guys drive to the net less and with less passion than Caulfield and Kunz. -
But is he, or just engaged? According to this ... he's engaged. As far as a married player, back in the day Mal Parks was. (He was a dad to boot.)

I see needing four D (Kleven gone, Frisch uses the fifth year, DET sees Moore can't handle DU/SCSU speed much less COL/TBL speed). I see needing four F (let Albrecht and Caulfield decide where to use their Covid year other than GF; hope to hang onto Gaber). I see needing at least one G (play Johnson and see if he rises in game situations). I'd like only two "fifth year" guys: Frisch and a goalie if it can be managed. Bring in 4D: Benoit, Wiebe, LIvanavage, Strathmann. If you need a fifth (yikes) it's Jubenvill. Bring in 4F: Croal, Panzer, Perron, Slipec. G? Hedquist and ____? -

... and two middle fing... nevermind. -
Knowing proper form and being able to execute it, not the same.

Purdy grabbed a bucket, stepped onto the field, and played like, well, ... like or better than Jimmy G!

@iramurphy, @Blackheart, a gentleman does not discuss such matters.

Coaching philosophy at UND: Three tally is dead
The Sicatoka replied to The Sicatoka's topic in Men's Hockey
Kinda clunky for a jersey but I’ll call Howie just the same. -
(For this conversation a “tally” is a hockey goal or a football touchdown.) I’m tired of UND coaches being behind the times. I swear they think they are still living in the era where three tallies or a three tally lead is enough and you can shut down the offense and rely on defense to get you home. And heaven forbid you hang a big squiggly number on someone. That three tally era is long gone. The current era coaches see three tallies as nothing and will fight to the end to overcome it. And that fight will overcome the best defense. At least one UND coach has figured out three tallies and defense won’t get it done and has shown he’ll leave the offense active and hang six or seven tallies. The coach that figured it out and adapted: Schweigert. I congratulate Coach Schweigert for letting the offense run lately. Coach Berry could learn something from Coach Schweigert. Berry needs to learn it’s OK to hang a “squiggly” on the other guy. DU, SCSU, WMU, UNO, et al seem to have no concerns when they do it.

Me? I’d be having a Sunday TV skate. That’s no pucks or sticks. The ten seconds before an SCSU goal would run on the TV (REA overhead). If you were on the ice: “Skate.” If you were not in camera frame when the puck went in: 2x. If you didn’t have your man covered: 3x. If it was your man who scored: 5x. We’d do that for each SCSU goal on on the weekend. It might be a long practice. Now, what “Skate” is … it is: Which drill does each guy hate most? That’s “Skate” for him, and it may include running shoes to allow for “arena tours” for some.
