HockeyMom
I think the audience, including TV viewers, should also wear helmets, visors and Kevlar vests. God forbid a puck gets past the netting, or somebody drops a brat on the guy in front of them. If people are afraid of getting hurt, they should take up soccer, or spelling bees. I already watch hockey on tv wearing a helmet....I thought that everyone did. The brat thing reminded me of the guy in the suite behind us at the West Regional that dumped a beer on me........which worked out good, cause he handed me a couple over the railing after I asked if I could have the next one in a cup. Ah, sweet hockey memories.
Goon
There is a golf course in Colorado that offers designer "hard" hats to its customers. Hidden shell liners. Optional batting helmets with designer colors and logos. Same with guys mowing their lawns and trimming the trees. Helmets are everywhere, or soon will be. Some Pa and fine coach in Duluth bought the farm on a head injury recently. I think it was during a practice. Seatbelts save lives. So do helmets. So do, sometimes, guns. Actually if you played golf with some of the guys I have you might want to wear a full face shield.
Greyeagle
Absurd. How does USA Hockey intend to enforce this rule? There is no way they can send a representative to all the different rinks where teams practice. I suppose that the only real way they can enforce it is by not providing insurance coverage if a coach cracks his head during practice and was not wearing a helmet. Jloos I think you have hit the nail on the head. Associations are going to have to police it & I imagine it will part of the insurance coverage all players & coaches are elible for under USA hockey. It's going to be very difficult to enforce unless there is an injury.
PCM
When in the press box, I've been ordered to wear a helmet backwards. I'm not sure what's up with that.

This doesn't appear to be the safest route to go either....this guy needs two helmets.
Ray77
I can safely say that this is one of the dumbest things that I have heard of. I have coached youth hockey for the past 5 years and would NEVER wear a helmet while coaching. We do have a coach in our organization that does wear a helmet - more power to him...that's his choice. HockeyMom
I got hit in the head with a slapshot when I was playing the organ at REA.....so now I wear a helmet.

farce poobah
My favorite use of a helmet was at the 2001 WCHA Final Five when Karl Goehring made the save with a header.
Old Barn Guy at Home
I am so glad I'm no longer coaching. The people who made this rule should have their butts kicked until they choke on the mouthguards they are wearing when they type up this kind of "safety" legislation (they are wearing them, you never know when a key might snap up and hit you in the mouth). If coaches are that inept on the ice, then maybe they should be coaching basketball. I'm sorry, this is total baloney. For those of you that may say, "If it saves just one person from injury.....blah, blah, blah." I say, save them from injury and get them off the ice and into a badminton coaching position. No one will ever convince me that they have to require legal adults (the coaches) to wear any particular protective gear against their wills. The next rule coming will be requiring the coaches to wear those "inflatable sumo wrestler suits" so they won't crack their tailbones when they trip over the blue line. I'll have to admit that when I played high school hockey, goalies didn't even wear masks, but that is not the point. I coached for over 27 years and never once had a head injury that a helmet would have prevented. I will say it again: If coaches are that inept on their blades, then by all means get them the heck off the ice!
