UND doesn't plan to have NDSU's level of disparity at the outset. Betty Ralston, senior woman administrator, said she would not be comfortable if UND reached NDSU's current levels.

"I would not want to be at a school where it's any less than 60-40," Ralston said. "The goal is to move it closer to 50-50, but if you get any worse than 60-40 ... I'd have issues with that."

Athletic director Tom Buning agreed that NDSU's numbers wouldn't be acceptable at UND.

It's been hard work and tough choices to get UND into alignment under proportionality criteria. Having done that work, no, going to NDSU's proportionality numbers at UND now would not be acceptable (because it would be backtracking on what's already been done).

That's not a slight to NDSU in any way and what they're choosing to do; that's the reality that UND is working in with what they've done.
