first fighting sioux recruit

Gearman sounds like a very interesting prospect. He was first team AP all-state in MN, has excellent size for a receiver, caught 13 td's and averaged 17 yards per catch as a senior. It sounds like he could potentially be a great player. According to mnpreps.com, Minnesota is recruiting him along with the Sioux, St. Cloud St. and San Jose St. (among others). Hopefully the fact that there are 3 or 4 other players from Alexandria on the team will help UND land him.

Probably a little history behind the Presthus verbal. The story I heard was his dad is from Rugby and went to play basketball for the Minnesota Gophers. The Gophers were after both Presthus and Phil Jackson at the time. Presthus signed with the Gophers first, and Jackson then decided on UND.

Paul Presthus was a great star, both basketball and football and led Rugby to a State BB title in, just guessing here, 1966 or 67, maybe both years?

Im not sure if NDSU is even concentrating on the regional prospects this year? The Fargo Forum reported today that the slate of regional athletes was very thin. Only 2 were mentioned. Early indications are that UND is hitting the regional prospects hard. Possibly a lot of good DII prospects and/or maybe the probationary thing?

In time most regional DI prospects are going to find their way to NDSU. The others, at least in so far as the future limited scholarship levels will support, will find their way to UND. Just as it should be.

Whatever the reason it was not unexpected that recruiting would be a bit tough for the BISON for the next couple of years. We will see what the NDSU slate looks like when it becomes official. So far so good!

If your comparing the length of the lists UND wins, but they are sharing scholarship money. I think NDSU has offered 4 full rides. Eventually the NDSU list will have about 27 more full ride offers. Beyond the top few players on the UND list I don't think there will be too much competition between the two schools, unless NDSU adds hockey. You guys will have to start looking to Bismark for your comparisons. For the most part the best local and regional athletes will find their way to NDSU.

Both sides have a good recruiting class. But I would say the following players, in no particular order are the best four on either list.

John Majeski DB, WR 6'1" 185 Hastings, Mn

Marcus Fitzgerald RB Richfield, Mn

Dominique Sims S Xfr - UMinn

Allen Burrell WR xfer - UNK Aurora, Co

Another ND recruit for the Sioux. Defensive lineman Nick Bonnet from state champion West Fargo has verbally committed to UND according to Pat Sweeney on the 5:00 sports. It's getting to be quite a pipeline from Jay Gibson's team to UND with Ryan Grant, Ross Brennan, Caleb Johnson, Steve Brennan and now Bonnet all having signed with the Sioux the past 3-4 years.

Going into the final weekend before the Feb 5th signing date, here's the latest recap on UND football verbal commitments:

Alan Sundby RB Cavalier, ND

Drew Thomas LB Grand Forks, ND

Jeff Richter LB 6'4" 240 St. Cloud, Mn

Mitch Braeggleman TE 6'2" 265 St. Cloud, Mn

Brett Bauer OL 6'6" 300 Dickinson, ND

Aaron Austin WR 6'3" Hallock, Mn

Preston Stewart FB/LB 5'11" 208 Flasher/Carson, ND

Michael Hegg TE Thompson, ND

Robbie Meek LB 6'1" 210 Bloomington, Mn

Nick Bonnet DL 6'4" 250 West Fargo, ND

Troy Ott WR 6'5" 210 Dickinson, ND

The following probably have (or had) UND scholarship offers and a decision should be forthcoming. (Options they are contemplating are included in parenthesis.) Rick Presthus of Edina was moved from the committed to this list, as he may yet walk on at the UMinn.

Rick Presthus WR 6'4" Edina, MN (UND, UMinn walkon)

Brian Dykema LB Strasburg, ND (UMary, UND)

Andrew Pratt OT 6'6" 280 Roseville, MN (UND, NDSU, Wyoming, Air Force, UMinn walkon)

Barrett Anderson OG Rochester, MN (UND, NDSU, other Div 1?)

Kyle Gearman WR 6'5" 200 Alexandria, MN (UMinn, SJoseSt, UND, NDSU)

Jeremy Faue FB 6'0" 205 Wayzata, MN (UND, Uof Minn Walkon)

Donovan Alexander CB fast! Winnipeg, MB (UND, NDSU, Eastern Mich, )

Josh Bean LB 6'1" 205 Calgary, AB (UND, Washburn (Ks))

The following almost certainly visited the UND campus. Offers may or may not be outstanding and could be dependent on decisions of the previous group.

Andy Colburn LB 6'2" 215 LaCrosse, WI (Winona St.)

Drew Hysjulien WR/P Grand Forks ()

Matt Holland RB 5'8" 180 Eden Prairie, MN ( )

Dan Roscoe OL 6'6" 300 Wayzata, MN ()

Jayson Winterfeldt 6'2" Hortonville, WI ()

Andy Soll OL 6' 3" 280 Fond du Lac, WI ()

This week, Luke Swan, a WR from Fenimore, WI decided to attend UWisco as a preferred walkon. He was being pursued by both UND and NDSU. His decision probably opened the way for Troy Ott's verbal commitment.

Don't be too sure. The home team locker room is really nice. The field is good, the stands suck, but who cares. It's the visitor locker rooms and visitor stands that really really suck. You also have to remember that they are going to build a new 6.000 seater for football this summer. It will be south of the hockey arena in the parking lots. It will be small, but from what I have seen it will be a nice little bowl. Most people that I have talked to want it to be 10,000.

Three more recruits have verbally committed to the Sioux according to the Milwaukee Journal. Andy White, an OLB-DE from Arrowhead, Duane Wenzel, a safety from Janesville Parker, and Andy Soll, an offensive lineman from Fon du Lac.

UND recruits from Wisconsin

I haven't found much on White, but Wenzel and Soll have very good credentials. Wenzel was named to at least three different all-state first teams, and Soll to two. Wenzel is also a very good hurdler and triple jumper in track.
