PCM
I saw this on WDAZ last night. Here's the UND news release. Looking down the list, of finalists, I can't see anyone who deserves the honor more than Hakstol. Win or lose at the Frozen Four, he's done an amazing job with this team. Old Barn Guy at Home
Congratulations to Hak, the coaching staff, the players, and the University. He has well earned this recognition and if he wins the award it will be "icing on the cake." Keep up the good work!
Sioux-cia
SWEET!! Congratulations Hak!! I wonder if Al can get a Naples bus trip together?
Goon
I hope they give it to Hak, but I suppose they will give the award to GWOZ. Seems college hockey loves Denver right now.
Diggler
While he may deserve it, I don't think he has a chance even if UND wins the NC. When a school like UND finishes in 5th place in the WCHA, no matter how tough the WCHA is, the coach will never win an award. Perhaps if he was coaching at UAA or Mankato and did the same thing, he'd have a chance. But when you are at UND, I think you almost have to win the WCHA and the NC, or at least be close to both, to win the Penrose. It's expected of UND to contend for both. I think it's between Owens and Gwoz.

Its a more complicated scenario then that, because one needs to take into account the situation he was in compared to the other coaches (losing Bochenski and Z. Par) and the undeniable effect he had on this team's late season turn-around. Other teams have done better than us, yes. But one needs to look at the situation each coach was in and decide which was able to make the best of that situation. Therefore, your point is taken, but I believe Hak at least SHOULD have a good chance - whether he will or not isn't up to me

Win or lose at the Frozen Four, he's done an amazing job with this team. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For all that has happened, he should be the landslide winner. However usually the team with one of the best regular season records will get the coach awarded. This vote should NOT even be close.
mikejm
The coach of each Frozen Four team is automatically a finalist for the Penrose award; no one even had to nominate Hak. Still it is a nice recognition for a coach having one whale of a first year.

mikejm
There's a good note in one of the wrap-ups from last night's game. It talks about Hakstol thinking he should use his time out after the Gophers scored two quickies, but when he looked at the clock, he realized there was a tv timeout coming. He saved the time out (didn't need it after all) and got the break the team needed to gather itself. Helluva coach.

Every coach should know when the tv timeouts are coming.
dagies
I think the point is he DID know, and he used it to his advantage. Keeping his TO in his pocket in case of emergency. Mikejm, my buddy and I asked ourselves the same question last night. Why didn't he use his TO and slow the MO. Then I read that this morning and I had the same thought as you. I guess that's why he's behind the bench and not me. Well, that and he can skate.

Keeping his TO in his pocket in case of emergency.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually, after the game, GDM - your faithful SiouxSports.com moderator - called me from a location in Columbus at which Sioux fans were consuming adult beverages and made the same point. Given how some were getting on Hakstol for not using timeouts, it was a good strategic move on his part. Well, that and he can skate. Plus, he knows which gloves to wear for hockey practice.
