terbele
I emailed C Kupchella and R Thomas regarding the band not going to the Final Five. He replied that this morning he released $10,000 in Pres's funds for the band to cover hockey and Women's BBall tourney's. However, he ended by saying it was the band director's decision yesterday to not go to the Final Five. I guess I dont know if they are going or not. If not, how do we influence the band's decision? dagies
I got the same reply. I'm wondering if, between all the tournaments (potentially regionals and Frozen Four for hockey and regionals and Finals for basketball) if the band director decided that there wouldn't be enough for all tourneys so decided to pass on the Final Five as there will be plenty of fans there, but travel with the team to these other tourneys where there will be fewer fans. Just my speculation.
siouxyeahyeah
Also, Final Five falls on the end of UND spring break. He probably thought it would be difficult to get people back to play for that. Besides, faced with a decision to go to the Final Five or the Frozen Four, 10 times out of 10 the band would pick the Frozen Four I would think. I mean, c'mon! Boston and a possible NC? Can't beat that!
01grad
It would be really fun with the band there. It adds a lot of atmosphere. I remember some of the games were very quiet and slow last year and a band helps to add enthusiasm. We have such a nice arena but would look cheap if we couldn't send our band like the others are sure to do. Oh well, as long as we play good hockey and win, nothing else matters. SiouxSax
Though I have been a long-time lurker on this site, I never post. This topic seemed as good as any to begin. I am a member of the band. While we are all disappointed that we are not traveling to the Final Five, we understand that there are a several reasons behind our absence. As of yesterday afternoon, we had hopes for traveling. Our last meeting before spring break was held then, and the intention was to choose the final 24 people who would travel to the Final Five. This is done using an eligibility list that includes participation and playing ability. The playoffs were to be held after the meeting yesterday to break any ties left. The plan was changed, however, when the funding for the trip didn't come through by that meeting time, which was the last feasible point to gather and set this list, especially with playoffs required to define each of the sections. Despite several phone calls to the administration, the band director did not have any confirmation of funding at that time. The funding came through this morning. This funding was given to be used for all remaining trips this spring. With the possible Frozen Four and Elite Eight Tournaments just around the corner, it would take a huge fundraising push from the community via a Phone-a-thon or something similar to cover the entire costs of these bigger trips. The $10,000 will cover but a small portion of our remaining costs, should we be fortunate enough to have such successful teams throughout the post-season. As it stands, the band will still be required to a few times the amount allocated to go on these remaining trips. Thus, it was the director's decision not to attempt to gather us again, with many already leaving on spring break and making other plans. There will be a band playing at this weekend's series, just not at the Final Five. If all goes well and the teams make the final tournaments in women's basketball and hockey, both the director and the band sincerely wish to travel. It will take more fundraising and effort, but those trips have not been ruled out. The band director does not hate hockey. He doesn't hate traveling. He wants us to go as much or more than most of the fans. I hope that this situation can be alleviated in the future, with the funding in place prior to our last meeting. I apologize for the length of this post, and I sincerely thank those of you who wrote to Dr. Kupchella on our behalf. Many of the band members read these forums often, and we are always thrilled to see recognition. Thank you all!

I appreciate your efforts and everyone else in the band. A college band is a significant part of the "feel" of a college sporting event. We'll miss you at the Final Five but we'll still sing In Heaven There Is No Beer without band accompaniment!
jerseychaser1
For awhile there I thought they were going to. I'm sorry you guys don't get to come along. Plan B: Since the band isn't going to be there, I ask this quesiton. Who all plays instruments?

PCM
...and the full version has something like 32 verses. But that's 67 fewer verses than "99 Bottles of Beer On the Wall."
bigmrg74
But that's 67 fewer verses than "99 Bottles of Beer On the Wall." Oh, but who hasn't tried to talk all the bottles of beer off the wall in one night?? Yeah, get at least 500, if you can swing it, a couple thousand kazoos and pass them out to Sioux fans. That would be priceless to get a whole arena humming along to In Heaven There is No Beer.
SiouxSax
Thanks to Al and his group, a few band members will be traveling to the Final Five, though we will not be playing instruments. Offering us seats on his charter was a wonderful gesture, and the band is extremely thankful for it (especially those of us that get to take him up on the offer). While we won't have our instruments, our voices will join the Sioux crowd loud and strong at the Excel!
