John Noah, UND's first All-American hockey player and 1952 Olympic silver medalist, died this morning in Fargo.

I used to enjoy seeing John chop up Dean Blais at Boosters meetings in Fargo when I could get there. Blais fears no one; Blais took everything John gave him in stride. :)

I'm still not sure I believe the stories of John donning the "Fr. John" persona and playing for the "friendly" team of Catholic priests (some his relatives) that would play for-fun public exhibition games in northwest Minnesota, but I could see it. #UltimateRinger

John, you'll be missed.

Mr. Noah was not only a great player, a great ambassador of the game and to UND, but even more importantly he was a great father, husband, grandfather and an inspiration to a generation of kids on how to play the game and at the same time having fun playing hockey.

I played against Dave and Paul growing up in youth hockey and high school. Shanley was our big rivalry back then. Stayed at the Noah's house on a couple occasions when I was a pee wee and bantam. Talk about a hockey house. One of the most passionate hockey guys I had the privilege to know. RIP Mr. Noah. You will be missed.

He brought in both the Flying Fathers and the Warroad Lakers to play exhibition games at the Fargo Coliseum as fundraisers for St. Anthony of Padua catholic church in Fargo.  The Flying Fathers are a good story all by themselves - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Fathers.  While he had 2 brothers that were priests, neither played in any of those games.  John played in those games as did Billy and Roger Christian (Warroad Lakers) and several other renowned hockey players.

The Flying Fathers were partly responsible for the marriage of Wayne Gretzky to Janet Jones -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Costello  One can't make this stuff up.  They were essentially the Harlem Globetrotters of hockey, but on a much smaller scale.
