Houghton, Michigan / Duluth

NorthDakotaHockey

Recommended Posts

I am on the road with my kids all season long. We are tripping to Houghton on Jan 16-17, and to Duluth in February for overnights. Mariucci, St. Cloud, and Mankato are drive times.

Question is, does anyone have a reasonable clue on which hotels the team is staying at in both Houghton and Duluth?

My kids would love to hang tight, although they are not the type to bat eyes or scramble for sticks or autographs. We just figured that our solid, quiet Karma will bring the team solid support.

This is one hell of a team by our estimation so far. Hope none of 'em are reading this.

Happy New Year to all. St. Cloud and that whiney President they have, that Jap guy, here we come!!! :)

Although I tend to agree, I would like to make one comment in NDH's defense.

Call me ignorant if you want, but I for one never considered "Jap" to be a racial slur until I was corrected by close friends only about a year ago. It still doesn't seem to me to rate with some of the other racial terms out there but again, maybe I just missed the memo.

Anyway, I for one am willing to give NDH the benefit of the doubt that he was actually meaning to use that term in such a derogatory manner.

As far as I know, Roy Saigo is an American. The term "Jap" has been considered a racial slur for at least the past two decades.

I don't disagree, nor do I wish to get into an argument about whether it should or shouldn't be.

However, Canuck isn't racial term relating to Canadians and so it isn't that hard to see how one might consider Jap a similar play on Japanese.

I'm only trying to point out how a person might use Jap with less intent than if they were to use wop, spic, nigger or any of the other terms we avoid these days. That's all.

I guess I missed the memo on this one too.

Maybe you should all just lighten up a little....Christ...the guy is talking about taking his kids to see some hockey obviously not intending to start another WWII. I hear the term "Jap" used by the japenese themselves - go to any Ichiban and listen for a few minutes. Ever been to Mexico and been called a Gringo or been from the North and called a Yankee?

m-w.com:

Pronunciation: 'jap

Function: noun or adjective

Date: 1886

usually disparaging : JAPANESE

dictionary.com:

Jap    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (jp)

n. Offensive Slang

Used as a disparaging term for a person of Japanese birth or descent.

The dictionary says usually disparaging; though my guess is that no harm was intended, rather it was just meant to be a slang identification of race. I agree that it's not so obviously disparaging and likely of ill-intent as "nigger", for example; but to avoid the possible interpretation of a racial slur, it would probably be wise to avoid it.

Posts that are obviously and intentionally racially disparaging are not permitted and will be removed.

And the "n" word is frequently used in rap songs. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to start using it in public. (Think of Jackie Chan in Rush Hour.)

I've been a frequent critic of SCSU's President Roy Saigo and have no use for political correctness. But attacking Saigo based on his race is unacceptable in my opinion.

"Happy New Year to all. St. Cloud and that whiney President they have, that Jap guy, here we come!!!"

So that is your definition of attacking??? Where exactly in those two sentences was he attacking anyone? When he said happy new year? or when he referred to the president as whiney?

Give it a rest. Take a deep breath and lighten up.
