Matt Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 We tend to get caught up in the Sioux-Bison debate, but the best two programs in the region may be the Jacks and Coyotes. I've only seen the Jacks play. Any thoughts on how those teams may stack up next year (assuming they play)? Quote

The coach at SDSU is be far the best recruiter in the dakotas. Quote
Coyote Fan Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 In South Dakota it's considered taboo to even consider another in state school or school in the 5 state area to be anywhere close to as good as the beloved Jacks. That is all you really need to know to answer the question. Don't ask a SDSU fan for an honest opinion because you will never get one. Some things that they say are true and some are not true but one cannot make the distinction because everything they say is slanted their way. Of course when USD beat UNI on the road in an exhibition game by 30 and SDSU beat the same team at home by less than 15 that doesn't really matter. Everything that points to anything other than a SDSU 20 or 30 point blowout is meaningless to them. Quote

I fully expect the Lady Jacks to make a run at the NIT Championship, and be one of the best teams in the NIT field. Could the yotes/sioux/bison complete for an NIT DI championship, absolutely not. Coyote Fan Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 The best thing about what the SDSU women are doing is that it sets the bar high for the other D1 teams in the area. UND and NDSU now have something to strive for and the excuses of not being able to compete because it's simply D1 get a little less worthy that way. Quote

I say give them their due, they almost ran the table in the Summit and have 20+ wins. SDSU was a stronger team last year, but lost their star Vogel (who went in the WNBA draft). This year they did not play the strength of schedule nor did they win against highly ranked teams like they did last year. SDSU also lost to some very weak teams (W Ill and Valpo). The Summit is a very weak women's league (only SDSU and Oakland are in the top half of DI), with bottom dwellers like Centenary, Southern Utah, and UMKC playing at levels less than the NCC. Massey Ratings actually indicate that the NCC is stronger than the Summit in women's basketball and that both UND and USD exceed SDSU's power ratings. 72 South Dakota 26 1 1.687 2.67 ( 325) II 81 North Dakota 25 2 1.631 2.68 ( 323) II 88 S Dakota St 22 6 1.602 3.82 ( 166) I 144 Oakland 18 9 1.351 3.42 ( 226) I 182 N Dakota St 16 11 1.253 3.48 ( 218) I 196 MN Mankato 20 7 1.217 2.66 ( 326) II 219 Oral Roberts 16 12 1.157 3.40 ( 229) I 222 Augustana SD 21 8 1.149 2.63 ( 330) II 224 IUPUI 15 15 1.145 3.60 ( 202) I 241 W Illinois 14 15 1.086 3.50 ( 212) I 289 IUPU Ft Wayne 11 17 0.987 3.46 ( 222) I 347 Missouri KC 10 18 0.863 3.28 ( 245) I 356 NE Omaha 17 11 0.844 2.04 ( 404) II 392 St Cloud 12 17 0.772 2.74 ( 318) II 411 Southern Utah 6 22 0.742 3.53 ( 209) I 615 Centenary 4 23 0.407 2.90 ( 299) I 648 MN Duluth 4 22 0.361 2.75 ( 316) II Average NCC power rating: 1.09 Average Summit power rating: 0.93 Quote

GeauxSioux Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 A Bison fan coming to a Sioux forum to talk smack about SDSU WBB. Hmm, things must be awfully boring at NDSU right now. Quote
UND92,96 Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I'm not going to go so far as to say that once UND and SDSU start playing again, UND will have the upper hand. But FWIW, at the peak of SDSU's dII success--the 01-02 to 03-04 seasons--UND was 7-4 against them. It's all about recruiting. If UND can continue to recruit the Langen's, Kimbrough's, Boese's, etc. of tomorrow, they'll be fine. If not, they will struggle. Quote
Herd Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Those Massy ratings and quarter will get you a bowl of soup. Their relevance is nil. Yes, NDSU used to beat the jacks too, not any more. None of the dakota schools have the speed and athleticism to compete effectively with them at this point. Quote

Just cruising through and noted this thread. I won't participate except to point out that for the first part of the season, SDSU was missing as many as three and four of its top people (hard to say top people when they have at least 10 (could argue the entire squad) relatively interchangeable parts). We had a rash of injuries which affected all-Summit League Warkenthein as well as Oistad, Corneman and others. Once those problems went away, I think most Jackrabbit fans will tell you this year's team was a little better than last year's team. The key: superior bench strength. They should do well in the WNIT. For the future: the Jackrabbits are very young and have recruited exceptionally well for the coming class and have commitments from top athletes in the class of 09.
