  1. its a niche sport

I know I'm going to get blasted for this, but...

It would be interesting to see numbers on hockey vs. pro-gaming viewership.  Not sure what would be realistic comparison, but I know there is a very large gaming community, and the pro-gamers and followers keep growing.

Not blasting hockey, I know what it means to UND, but by definition, it too is a niche sport.

  2. As much as I understand the reasoning for this post ( I am of the "older" generation, now too ), this will become more common.  Grew up gaming, and never thought would see this happen.  Personally know a kid (14-15) that gave up on competitive athletics, had ability to get to college, and decided to become a competitive gamer.  He makes good money playing Call of Duty (shooting (war ties) genre for those not familiar). He plays other games with his team, but I dont know what they are, just seen him play CoD.  There are many channels on YouTube and Twitch dedicated to gaming. As my grandfather would say shaking his head "this is the world we live in."

But the kid is doing what he loves and is prosperous, so hey, good for him.

  3. Not a fan of Reno, not sure of how many fans will show, but I will be optimistic and hope for the best.  I know it gets down to money, and if the Big Sky thinks its fans will travel to Reno, then they get ticket money and TV money.  If fans don't travel, it will be empty seats, but they will still get TV money, and they will move it to another site in a few years.  I presume Reno will do a good job of hosting and marketing it to other tourists as well. I've seen some pretty empty conference tournament games on TV and hope the kids dont have to play in an empty arena. Expanding the tourney to all teams was a good move to help get more fans in.  Now lets hope UND is playing for a championship there!

  4. Football pays for itself nowhere save for a few P5 schools. Basketball is better because of far fewer scholarships.

Hockey pays for itself at a very very few unique places.

I understand what you are trying to debate. But I'm not saying scholarships will be paid for. We've moved up to D1, now things have changed and paying COA is a reality. That is what should be able to be paid for thru increased ticket revenue, gambling, donations... I just don't want to be waiting on other schools. Want to continue getting athletes from the TC area. Want to get an edge on NDSU, and once they start paying at least be ahead of them, and still be the better option? These are the times we are in. If we can't find the money, then I don't see us competing at the D1 level.
  5. The fact that UND is in "wait and see" mode, or "evaluating" the situation, makes me hesitant to have any faith in the Athletic Department, which there is little. Can't believe I'm seconding GFHockey, but raise tickets a few bucks, hit up boosters, sell more advertising, whatever needs to be done to raise the funds. Even cut a couple of programs if that makes fiscal sense. Lead, please don't follow. If we do it from the jump, we gain a competitive edge. Football will be paying for itself in a short period of time, and I would say MBB wouldn't be far behind. Hockey isn't the major money making program in college sports, that is proven. Put UND in the lead position on this, make everyone else catch up. I know many people in favor of paying a little more to make this a reality.

***oh and don't raise beer prices (or any liquids, for those of us who don't drink alcohol)***

  6. Arguments can't be made for/against COA based on if other Big Sky teams are/aren't providing it. Hasn't the Admin learned that wait and see isn't the best option for the program. If the idiots in power can't figure a way to pay FB and MBB athletes, then WBB and whatever else to satisfy Title IX, why are we D1? They need to do their jobs and raise money so that UND leads the way, instead of falls behind. Im tired of Hockey AD not seeing the big picture, and moving the potential money making programs ahead. I don't care what other Big Sky teams are doing. Nor do I care of NDSU doesn't pay. Figure a way to get the athletes some extra money, and lead for once.

  7. I am on forums. I don't represent a person with average interest in collegiate sports.

Funny you mention the basketball games. The first couple had some atmosphere. The last 3 have not. At all.

Ask the average college kid about the other school and you'll get a lot of comments like "ohhh.. That's right. We aren't supposed to like them."

The last two basketball games have been ass kickings that were over in the first 10 minutes.  They were pretty one sided.  I would argue with you that the FU crowd was not in the game vs. UND this year at Scheels arena.

this^^^ and the game the year before at The Betty, the UND crrowd was fairly into it as well.

Wish NDSU fans would just say "yep there is a rivalry, evidence shows it."

  8. Enough people have posted this to lead me to believe it's probably true, but it makes me wonder why it was that somebody--presumably close to the program--indicated to Miller that it was not yet a certainty?

Covering his @$$ cuz he doesnt have inside info?  :)  Though, I would wait for Tyler to speak before reporting anything too.  So, I guess, he is doing his job?

  9. They are unproven at the college level. Winning high school games in Iowa and scoring points in AAU games doesn't mean sh*t. Have you seen the style of play in those summer tournaments? Yeesh. Sadly, it reminds me of the way UND plays.

The only people pumping up these recruits as the 'saviors of the program' are Jones supporters. The rest of us realize they are 18 year old's who may not adjust to college and be gone in a heartbeat, as so many freshman are. The football team has a few pretty good freshman too but I'm gonna wait until I see them on the field for a few seasons in a row.

Their high school years do matter, otherwise how do you evaluate if their game could translate to the college level?

It is an inexact science, but you can usually tell if a kid should be playing ball in college.

Winning games in Iowa and Minnesota against other teams with other college level talent...

Competing and winning(some) in regional games against top teams from other states, again with other college level talent...

Making all conference, all tournament, and to the state all star game...

And yes, AAU ball can be ugly. But if you are performing in the big tournaments, again against other college level players...

That generally translates to being a good college basketball player.

Maybe they are "unproven" on the college court. But they haven't had a chance to play on it. The incoming recruits, and others here, are certainly talented enough to play at this level. Things are looking good for UND MBB.

If you can't see past your desire to get rid of Jones, and acknowledge that the young guys we have here are very good, you shouldn't be worrying about who is backing Jones.

And I've stated elsewhere, if the team isn't successful next year, get a new coach.

  10. The benefit of having a better coach for years to come far outweighs the loss of a few unproven recruits if they decided to transfer because of a coaching change.

    Unproven recruits?

Most of the underclassmen, and incoming freshman have won state titles or at least gotten deep in the tournament.  Some have had phenomenal AAU stats. I dont think you can call them unproven.

  11. Players often leave after coaches get fired.  Look at how many players transferred out of the football program after Mussman got canned.  All I'm saying is that we better be careful what we wish for in regard to Jones.

Edit: Or at least hire a replacement QUICKLY!

There usually is more turnover in football due to numbers. And the change in philosophy, and accountability/discipline.  With basketball, if this all comes down the way we want, and if Jones is let go, it would be hard to see any of those kids leaving. With that potential, would be tough transfer for player.

And I think next year is going to be a good year also.  Not writing it off in anyway.  But the few years after should be teams that get to the NCAA tourney.

  12. Is this Prom '15 or what? Are those white cummerbunds that Wisconsin's wearing? WTF, Adidas?

Can you imagine UND green/white in that pattern?  No thank you!

Of course not, he's a prick.

He was on my flight from JAX to MSP a couple weeks ago........a couple passengers brought up the 30 for 30 and his commercials. He didn't seem amused.

He runs a really good camp and has always been great to the kids there. He also has taken time and talked to many people/fans after and has been cool.  I'm sure he has his bad days too.  Now, he was a prick while in the NBA, but from what I've noticed he's gotten better.  Just my view from dealing with him.

  13. I'm not here to spew out what my sources told me

If I didnthey would be mad

I'll ask them to see if I can and report back to you

It wasn't thatbgreat of a job btw

If the voices in your head are getting mad at you, they have medication for that :)

  14. Is it just hopeful thinking or is their any real evidence that Wheeler is seriously considering UND?

    Baker visiting next weekend.

    Without shay

    We ain't getting him

Shay is not getting the deal done. Slightly concerned about SDSU connection, but was told it wasnt happening. He has friends here and really wants to be at UND. Sees what is possible here and wants to be a part of it. (this will be a successful program)

Im in no way saying we shouldn't. A Baker, Crandall, Seales, McDermott, Collins core at positions 1-3 for 3 years would be great.

But we need to address issues for next year as well. I think we need to address our issue at power forward and potential at guard as well.

There are no "guard issues."  Hooker, Crandall, Seales, and whoever supporting.  Those three are going to create all sorts of problems for other teams next year.

PF- Bernstine, Collins some, and Cashman/Shanks in that role occasionally.  Should use a scholarship to shore this up and add depth, I agree

  15. He coaches fundamental basketball. Something missing from most teams in today's game.

    THIS^^^^

That and he values every possession. However, they have become a more up-tempo team to go along with their great defense.

They have become a fun team to watch, I hate to admit.  Duke vs Wisconsin, my worst nightmare. Here's hoping for another good game Monday.
