  1. Again, I've already said that the nickname does not benefit the university overall so I don't know how you can read into that statement that someone is being benefited. But if you want this to be an academic exercise than I'll throw this out there:

To ensure that the amount of public time and resources expended in retaining the nickname are not wasted, rather than making reactionary decisions based upon other parties’ actions.

Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. The state throwing more money at the name will simply result in more money spent. The name will be just as gone or the University will be just as hurt. Spirit Lake's lawsuit could potentially save the name, but the laws, consitutional amendments, etc. do nothing but harm UND.

  2. You are exactly right. One of his first follow tweets was from a OHL scout. I hope we are wrong, but I see him using UND as a chip.

Let's not judge the kid. I'm happy to have him committed to UND and I hope the coaches/players/etc can convince him to actually come to UND. That OHL scout looks like a sneak and reeks of desperation.*

*I feel completely comfortable judging and bashing on an OHL scout. :hypocrite:

  3. Kentucky isn't on the outskirts of their conference and was a member of the SEC since it started in 1932. UND is all by itself in location and is the newest member along with Cal Poly, UC Davis and SUU to join. Big difference. Its hard to expell a team that has been there for over 50 years (your example of UK in the 80's) and a team that isn't a full member until July 1st.

I don't think Matt was saying it's unlikely UND gets the boot, I think he was saying it would be a VERY uncommon thing in the world of NCAA athletics if it happened. Which shows how rare just having the commissioner talk about kicking out a member is.

  4. I did graduate from UND...I am a season ticket holder for sports other than hockey. I was at the volleyball game against NDSU. I was at Purpur arena to watch the Women's hockey team beat Bemidji in overtime of the WCHA playoffs last year. Don't put me in a box. Being ranked #23 is not my goal for the football team either but I think it is a pretty good start for a team going through D1 transition. I am very excited for all of UND sports as we go forward in D1. I just don't have the belief that the nickname or sanctions will harm us as we are hearing. I also think that there is the ultimate end game that will end off of this controversy once and for all and that is a vote from Standing Rock and I think we are one step closer to that now.

Hmm, I guess I made an ASSUMPTION. See what happens when people ASSUME things and they are wrong? They look dumb. In the case of the Fighting Sioux debate, the people ASSUMING no harm will come to UND are risking something the rest of us have no intention of losing.

  5. The last football poll I saw had UND ranked in the top 25 which is better than 100 schools in FSC football. UND beat Montana and NDSU in mens basketball. The other sports are all doing well. Not bad for teams in transition without any playoffs home or away! Now that we are playoff eligible and in the Big Sky I think we will be just fine thank you. So I guess if you look at the facts recruiting will not be an issue now will it?

Being ranked #23 is not my goal for the football program. Beating Sioux Falls with a last second field goal is not my goal for the football program. Going the entire season without a road win is not my goal for the basketball program. You assume the Big Sky will keep UND. I'd rather know than assume. I realize you didn't go to UND and you don't care about anything but the MEN'S hockey team and the logo, but the other sports are important to a lot of people and to the University as a whole.

  6. Might be the dumbest comment I have read so far...they did just fine recruiting during the transition didn't they when they were guarenteed no playoffs for 5 years home or away! You realize there is no home playoffs in D1 for basketball and MEN'S hockey right? There is not a UND recruit for football that would ever say that I am not coming because I can't play a home football playoff game in front of my friends...come on you have to be kidding me? Furthermore it was not clear that UND was dropping the name when the Big Sky accepted them, as a matter of fact the SIoux logo took up about half of the Big Sky home page when they welcomed them to the league on their web site.

If you think the product UND put on the football field and basketball court from 2008-2010 was of high quality, then it's obvious you haven't been watching any games. The football team lost to SIOUX FALLS of the NAIA. That can never be allowed to happen again. Did you play football for UND? No? Then you have no idea what recruits consider in making a decision. The Big Sky used the Sioux logo because at the time of acceptance UND was the Fighting Sioux but UND officials had made it clear that they were going to follow the agreement entered into with the NC$$.

  7. We are in the 10% of the mid-majors that do not lose money. Funny, based on your logic they would have voted us out after South Dakota left, or maybe after the constitutional amendment to keed the name, or yesterday. Well they haven't have they? Fullerton is on record as saying they are taking a wait and see aproach and we are in the Big Sky as long as we are a viable member...I say we will be a viable member for a long time...you obviously say we won't. Time will tell my friend...

UND sports sponsored by the Big Sky will lose viability. Without recruits, teams will go bad. Why would a recruit pick a school knowing he/she could never have a playoff atmosphere game at home in front of their friends? Knowing that they'll never get to play against Minnesota, Wisconsin, or the other big regional schools?

When the Big Sky accepted UND, it was pretty clear UND was going to drop the name, but then Carlson got involved. UND was a perfect looking apple that the Big Sky plucked from the tree. The Big Sky is now hoping the apple isn't rotten inside and they don't have to throw us away.

  8. Not disagreeing with much of anything in this thread. But does anyone else see how this whole ongoing nickname fiasco is just a total cluster **** and is really no more than a microcosm of what is wrong with our country in it's current state.

You're referring to smart people being vastly outnumbered by..... uh...... less smart people?

  9. It comes down to funding revenue. Their marginal cost is much lower than on campus students but UND get's the same funding from the state per student, which is already higher than NDSU on a per-person basis, while these people pay far more than regular tuition.

The funding model for state appropriations is not tied to enrollment.

  10. Right, a state cannot pass a law or constitutional amendment for that matter that prohibits it from adhering to the terms of a legally binding contract.

But the contract doesn't say UND has to remove the name, it says UND must remove the name OR be placed under sanctions. The law removes the "or" and makes UND's choice for it. The legislature making a choice for UND goes against the constitution, which gives the power to the SBHE. This is why the SBHE would need to get a constitutional ruling if it doesn't agree with what's happening.

Oh, and Mr. McGibblets is pretty awesome

  11. Here's what UND/SBHE should do:

    1. Do not challenge the constitutionality of the law.

    a. SBHE will win and the law will be struck down, however, it will energize the movement to put the name on the constitution.

    b. I believe if the law is in place, less people will feel the need to go out and find a petition to sign to put the name on the consitution because they will already feel like they've won.

    c. If the name gets put on the constitution, not only is UND screwed, but we would now have the biggest joke of a constitution in the country.

    2. Use the Fighting Sioux name.

    a. Hopefull the Women's Hockey team will earn a home playoff game due to playing well, but unfortunately they will suffer for the use of the name. Maybe I'm a terrible person for saying so and this is just my opinion, but better them in the short term than the football team forever.

    b. This will give dumb people a chance to see how the law will affect UND athletics prior to the vote.

    3. Pray :hypocrite:

    a. For false signatures to be found (Minnesota residents, dead people, people signing as a joke).

    b. For smart people to remember to vote and dumb people to forget (maybe the Herald/Tribune/Forum could help out be not running articles on it everday :whistling: )

    c. For the Big Sky to give them time.

    d. For the NC$$ to back down (this will never happen, but praying for it might make some people feel good).

    4. If all this fails, say $%$! it and break the law.

  12. Again, sioux2013...how about you stay off of my forum kid....you clearly hate this kid, in which u said u "don't like him".....how about u go to Huff and tell him u don't like him...ur such an idiot. You spend ur entire life on this site, get a life dude. You live and die by UND basketball forum and criticizing Huff. Don't be an angry bird kiddo...enjoy the winning streak their having....

Watch out sioux2013 or he'll beat you up through the interwebs :silly:

  13. I don't put much stock into anything before 1970....very proud of the teams who won titles in the 60's. But if you go 1970 to 2003, NDSU won more games against UND. But that is manipulating a statistic to show something other than All-Time.

I don't put much stock into anything before 1993..... if you go 1993 to 2003 Nickel Trophy games, UND was 9-2 against Moo U

    :p
