  1. I wouldn't overstate that 7 of 8. Almost All were short swing passes and everything good came on a rollout. It's not like he was picking apart the PSU seconday. In three possessions, only one could be considered marching down the field. The others were a three and out that included a sack when Mollberg didn't get rid of the ball and another was a drive where his lone incompletion came on a third down that killed that drive and hadn't got past midfield. Hardly what one could call "complete control".

Mollberg just doesn't look comfortable in the pocket and seems to have no sense of when pressure is coming and he needs to avoid a sack. Bartels appeared much more confident once he got rolling despite what one would assume has been minimal practice time with the 1s. I think Bartels has to be the choice going forward.

And for those saying that Bartels was only successful against a weak Portland State defense, remember that UND didn't exactly light it up offensively against Stony Brook or Robert Morris.

    Agree

Bartels should be the guy moving forward.

  2. Mollberg seems to have the size and strength to be the popular choice but at the end of the day we need an accurate quarterback that doesn't turn the ball over. Joe has certainly shown some improvement, but Bartels just appears to be a better fit for this offense.

Often times quarterbacks have the tangible attributes (arm strength, height, weight, etc.) but they can't make the correct decisions (intangibles). I think we may have a case of this with Joe Mollberg; he has the potential, but he's not the type of decision-maker required of quarterbacks.

Both last year and last game, Bartels was the better decision-maker. I think that is huge for the way Bubba wants to play football, especially this year with how the defense is playing. Bartels deserves a shot because there is evidence to suggest he is the better decision-maker.

  3. Bartels scored two offensive touchdowns in one half of football.

Mollberg hasn't scored two offensive touchdowns in an entire game this season.

Bartels played better last year and again he looked better yesterday. I say give Bartels a chance, especially now that there's a two week period to make the transition.

  4. Joe is not very mobile, not quick in the least. Stiff with slow feet. Ryan is a worse runner yet.

With that said, Bartels still picked up some positive yards rushing with both some designed runs and improvisation yesterday.

  5. Great to see the offense, defense, and special teams come up with a big play with the game on the line.

My hat is off to Bartels. It is no small thing to come into a game like that absolutely cold. No warm up, limited 1st team reps during the week, and lead the team like he did in that 2nd half. I would be interested to see what he could do with two weeks with the first team to prepare for SUU. He should get the chance. It isn't as though there is a lot of room to regress-Joe hasn't exactly led this offense to even mediocre status in the conference or the nation.

Very good point. Bartels epitomized yesterday why the QB position is as much mental as it is physical.

In the first half, without the mindset he was going to play, Bartels wasn't very effective. In the second half, after collecting his thoughts at halftime, Bartels came out and played real good.

I say let Bartels prepare as the starter for 2 weeks and give him the opportunity to get us to .500 with a win vs. SUU.

  6. Simple question...to anyone who actually has seen this team play multiple time this year...you think Joe leads this team to a second half comeback yesterday?

    That's what I thought..................

I think the coaching staff has devoted a lot to having Mollberg be the starter so it will be difficult for the staff to bench Mollberg if he is healthy.

With that said, Bartels played better in that half of football than Mollberg has anytime this season. Coaches need to take a long, hard look at this one, because as Bubba always says, starting Bartels may be the best move for the TEAM.

  7. No we have to keep winning. Our attendance has nothing to do with FU.

Wrong. I've said it before and I'll say it again. NDSU pulls away 1000 fans from out west and up north; those fans use to go to UND games.

NDSU needs to be competed with. Yes UND needs to win, but having NDSU win national championships every season doesn't help either.

Pretending NDSU isn't apart of the equation is just wishful thinking.

  8. Hard fought win and a gritty effort by the defense to end the game. That was fun watching the defense close it out like that!

However, UND doesn't win this game if Bartels doesn't play well in the 2nd half. Given how poor UND's offense has been with Mollberg, UND has to go with Bartels in 2 weeks versus SUU.

  9. Comments above reiterate a central message that I have too mentioned: UND football needs to regain respectability.

For those who speak about "their time" and how it was in past eras, one must realize UND football has really been a joke since 2009 when UND lost to Sioux Falls and NDSU started making playoff runs. Once UND starts winning again, then word will spread among college kids, like it usually does, that UND football is "good" and worth watching and supporting.

  10. Offense with a couple touchdowns and couple field goals. If they don't commit turnovers and self-inflicted errors, UND's offense is more capable than some believe.

The defense will again set the pace of the game and lead the team.

    UND 20

    PSU 10

  11. Lots of "ifs", I'm sure Montana found some of those as well. The team needs to keep playing hard and improving every day.

Better than getting blown out or just not being able to move the ball or tackle. Then the issue becomes a talent or personnel issue which takes much longer to overcome.

Team and coaches shouldn't be satisfied yet because wins and playoffs are needed, but this team is a lot further along than anyone initially imagined. They have the potential to already be a top Big Sky team.

Watching the highlights of the Montana game, it's even more apparent to me how close this UND team is to being good and winning ball games. UND only has ''self-inflicted' mistakes to really fix. If UND didn't have the 2 bad snaps, fumble the ball away within the five, and if Mollberg wouldn't have fumbled the ball away when sacked, UND likely would've won.

Point is, if UND plays a disciplined, consistent four quarters, the offense will put up points. Vs Portland State for homecoming, UND's offense can score plenty if they are playing smooth. Hope to see more improvement from the Montana game to the Homecoming game.

  13. Good lord people.

The freshman holder and freshman kicker screwed up under pressure. So what? Yes it would've been huge if they made it, but UND isn't competing for titles this season anyway. Let's hope they learn and can start hitting big kicks for the next 3 and a half years starting Saturday.

  14. There's no question the real causal perception of UND football, which I imagine is what the student's perception is too, is that UND football "sucks". That will change when, dare I say it, NDSU football respects UND football. Everyone listens to NDSU football fanatics about now NDSU is all and everything football when it comes to North Dakota. Heck, UND students even go to NDSU football games. When UND is competing and winning MOST of their games, then the perception will change; believe it or not, even amongst NDSU people. Right now, even with the improvement Bubba and the team have shown, UND hasn't started WINNING games yet on a consistent basis.

Respect is different than 'love of'.

  15. New offer:

WR Kevin Jackson, 6'3", 175, 4.5, LaGrange Park (Nazareth Academy), IL Has offers from Nevada, NDSU & WY

Offer has been out for a while. I believe he was listed as a CB in Wiki.

  16. More importantly how do you figure you "almost" beat Montana State? That was a 26-7 game at halftime and got to within 11 points very late in the game. That is not an almost win where I come from.

As for the Montana game they didn't have their best offensive player and QB for a good chunk of the game.

    Stop drinking the koolaid. U

In the Montana State game, UND gave MSU 7 points in the 2nd qtr off a pick 6 and fumbled the ball away on the 10 yard line or so. Also, they missed a chip shot field goal. Game easily could have been less than a one score game or so at halftime. Also, UND held MSU to 3 points in the second half.

Montana has a bunch of talent. Their running game was unscathed and UND shut it down. As for their defense, UND moved the ball well at times and could've beat them if only one of the following happened: didn't fumble at the Montana 3, didn't have 2 poor snaps (1 resulting in a safety), or didn't have the last minute field goal blocked.

Point is, these are not moral victories, but rather indicators of what Bubba has done with a team that got blown out against Montana State and Montana last year at home. UND has improved and it all has happened with Mussman's recruits in the first half of the season.

Also, no one is dwelling off of the last two games. Rather, we have moved on and are excited for what UND can do the remainder of the season. That is a telltale sign that fans are impressed with the capability of this team and not stuck on some made-up moral victories of the past.

UND is on the rise whether or not you want to admit it.

  17. When the Missouri Valley has 8 ranked teams, there is no way in hell UND gets in with a 7-5 BiG Sky record with no wins over ranked opponents. Big Sky will get 2, maybe 3 teams in this year. I could easily see 7 wins this year for UND though.

I don't think UND gets into the playoffs unless they win out and go 8-4 (6-2 BSC) and defeat Eastern Washington while they are #2. The chances of that are minimal. Nevertheless, I think the chances of UND going 6-6 (4-4 BSC) are very very good and that would be a huge improvement considering the 2013 UND season and this year's youth. If UND goes 6-6 or 7-5 in 2014, then next year should be a very good year for UND football.
