    This is a very level headed post. I agree with it. I think the philosophy/style that Bubba is implementing is perfect for this region and for championship football. However, with that said, you still need to recruit to this style; it remains to be seen if Bubba can recruit and secure the linemen and defenders necessary to play this brand of physical football (especially with the MVFC looming).

    Let's not get desperate here. Moving forward, when UND makes hires in the future, UND needs to consider those who may not have previous ties to UND. The guys who helped UND have Division II success will only be able to contribute so much in the modern Division I era. The whole "good ol' boys" idea is dangerous and can (has) get UND into trouble. I'm for hiring young coaches with bright futures but limited experience (former position coaches or quality control) and/or experienced coaches with DI FBS experience. Places outside of UND most certainly have ideas that UND could desperately use right now and into the future.

    Perhaps, UND (and apparently many of their "supporters") just doesn't have the current mindset (and perhaps funds) necessary to be overly competitive in men's sports other than hockey. There is hope though. Not with next season magically bringing better luck (as the injury theorists say), but rather President Kennedy and the eventual new athletic director.

    Going 3-8 during a championship expectation season does rightfully raise questions and concerns, though. Don't you agree? Endorsing the "it will all be better with less injuries" mindset doesn't do much for the program's current state. That type of complacency is troublesome in my opinion; it relies too much on good fortune and not proactive change.

    UND can still dictate the uniform design. I doubt the UND traditionalists that head the programs will ever sign off on anything so modern and weird looking.

    I agree Gundy, UND would've been in the game with better quarterback play. Unfortunately, I don't know if UND could've won with the way the defensive backs were playing on 50/50 balls. Part of it is the scheme of course with them isolated down the field, but man, Stitt's vertical offense sure puts pressure on UND's cover 0 defense (in the 2 contests of Bubba vs Stitt that we saw).

    The offense is incredibly basic and quarterback unfriendly - that I agree with. The offense's success is predicated on simply having better players than the opposing team; no scheme by Rudolph to try offset that at all. I will say, though, that this is apparently how Bubba wants it. Disappointing to a degree. One cannot overlook the defense though. They were horrible in 2017, and that is not okay for a program based on its defensive identity (Bubba and Schmidt). The team had poor depth; why wasn't this addressed earlier on? The staff has been in place for four seasons. This type of a season was set up far before the injuries of this season actually occurred. That is where the fault lies.

    Back in 2014 and 2015, the staff brought in a lot of linebackers and corners that eventually just left. I'll do the research later and post names to prove my point. I agree that the 2014 class was fragmented due to time constraints with the hiring of the staff, but the staff had 2015, 2016, and 2017 to correct this. That is where I find this inexcusable. College football coaching staffs dictate the formation of the roster - that's reality. If you can't recruit, you're limited as a program. Pure and simple. UND took its lumps in 2014 and to some degree 2015. We should be past the "depth and recruiting excuse" by now people.

    Drop off is an understatement, more like nose-dive off a cliff. The young players forced into action at LB and corner were not able to play effectively this season, either due to youth or ability (not in the mood to argue that point again). Either way, though, it's fair to say this team needed more sophomores and juniors as backups and they just weren't there. That is on the staff for failure to properly recruit and maintain the roster. There's been a lot of missed linebacker and corner recruits in addition to player attrition at those spots during the Bubba years already.

    Those *NFL* teams had possibly the three best defenses in *NFL* history. But yes, there are always exceptions. I wouldn't aim for UND to be an exception.

    Even with a tremendous offensive line, good defenses can stack the box and stop the run. Without top quarterback play, it becomes very difficult against the best teams. Like I mentioned earlier, you need both quarterback play and offensive line play if you want to compete for championships. Sure you can still make the playoffs with a very good offensive line and average quarterback play, but who wants to settle for that?

    That's true, but quarterback play is damn important too. Can't win championships without quarterback play. All in all, I'd say you need both.

    Biggest change should be for men's basketball; Jones' squad should be wearing Adidas by next season. Brand consistency across the board and retail sales will be the two reasons this deal is significant. About time UND got this done - good work.

    Consider Ketteringham a part of that class. If UND has to rely on Zimmerman or Boltmann at QB for 2018, I'll go with the prediction of UND having a losing season again.

    I'm too biased to wager against UND making the postseason. I sure hope they are there and dammit win the whole thing. With that said, when I try my hardest to ignore my biases, I am having a hard time seeing this team make the playoffs next season. I'm going to hope for the best but expect, well, let's just say not the best. Go UND!

    Ha apparently ... sure doesn't seem like it. I guess I'm also including the transfer QB Nate Ketteringham. Hopefully he is the real deal. Receivers Griebel and McKinney could be new contributors for 2018. Rest of the receiving corps largely returns also. Perhaps Kruse and Jenkins compete for play at the offensive line. Noah Larson could be darn good considering the talk surrounding him this fall. The defensive line freshmen also have been talked up. There could be some surprises, and for UND's sake, I sure hope they are all pleasant surprises. Go UND

    You don't believe 3-8 will affect the program's progress moving forward? That's more interesting than anything else you've said. We'll see.

    A 3 win season will do that ... If UND had poor depth this season following 7-4 and 9-3, what will 3-8 bring? The 2017 recruiting class that redshirted is the only shot UND has at being a contender in 2018.

    I don't think a big year at QB is possible with the system Rudolph runs. The offense will either have a bunch of rushing yards or no success; I'm not opposed to Rudolph's system as long as the offensive line wins their battles consistently. In 2017, that wasn't always happening and the passing game was non-existent. In 2015, the year was about the offensive line and the benefit their blocking provided to freshmen Santiago and Oliveira. .

    I do recall his progress up until that 2014 SUU game; however, I think the receiving corps and running game (or lack thereof) would've still limited his success that season. I understand your point of view, just don't completely agree with it. Now, if he was in a system with better receivers and running backs, it could've been a different story.

    Mollberg had all the tangibles to be a good quarterback. I think he just needed the coaching and system to put it altogether. Unfortunately, Rudolph didn't provide him that. The Mussman system in 2013 wasn't good either as the running game and defense were non-existent (throwing to Hardin and Golladay were pluses, though).

    Mussman recruited them, Bubba coached them .... There's still a disconnect. UND can get better players than most Big Sky Conference schools (hence the 2015 and 2016 season), but they can't out-recruit based on *current* facilities and success most of the MVFC schools. The necessary component for future success is very good coaching/scheming in addition to good recruiting. Let's see if that is present. I have my doubts.

    I think your wishful thinking could be spoiled in 2018. Let's see. The wins in 2015 and 2016 weren't collected due to superb coaching by any means. The players made several improbable plays and won many very close games.
