  1. Not just a time element, otherwise the oldest programs and/or longest tenured coaches would all be champions ...
  2. Only to a point; there's always a threshold. NDSU physically handled Wofford today - wouldn't have mattered if NDSU had Paul Rudolph or Chris Mussman calling the plays.
  3. You honestly cannot think talent has "nothing" to do with it. I was just catching you on your exaggeration. NDSU's OC Messingham has done a nice job, but he was not breaking records or earning raises when coordinating offense at Montana State, Indiana, or Iowa State. Talent differential is always a huge factor; NDSU has superior talent right now. Never dismiss the actual players on the field.
  4. I agree, SDSU has done a very nice job upgrading these things of late.
  5. The locker room is only part of the picture. Also consider coaches' offices and meeting rooms. UND football doesn't have a modern lobby where they can display trophies, awards, memrobilia, photos, etc. to impress recruits and visitors as they enter. This is all apart of college football today. Phase II of the HPC is UND football's chance at this, and it's desperately needed.
  6. Pretty average, huh? I'm curious what your relative thoughts would be on UND's Memorial Stadium and Alerus Center locker rooms then ... No bias, right? When recruiting kids that are receiving competitive regional offers from NDSU and other regional schools (Montana, Montana State, South Dakota State, etc.), this all is factored in.
  7. No. Im not going to hope for the FCS to become less competitive. To wish for NDSU to regress actually implies you want FCS football to become less relevant. NDSU, whether we like it or not, has elevated FCS football to a caliber and reputation it's never been at before. UND football needs to match that caliber or forever be considered a mid- to low-tier program.
  8. Candidate for most ignorant post of the year. " ... nothing to do wth talent." Wow.
  9. Big game tonight. Would do great things for UND's confidence. Pack the Betty. Environment should bring the best out of each team - may the best win! I have a gut feeling UND is simply the more talented team. NDSU hasn't shown much this season, but neither has UND (other than a pretty impressive Hawaii Tournament showing to start the season) Should be fun. Go UND!
  10. New QB coach and offensive coordinator would't hurt. Bubba's teams have never lit up the scoreboard offensively (4 year sample size), so changing something up there would be reasonable. His defenses have been solid in the past so I guess wait and see, but in 2017 it was horrible. All in all, UND needs better players. Either new coaches/recruiting tactics or new University attractions for recruits - ya'll pick which one. The major new attraction to consider would be HPC phase II. If you want to stick with Bubba and have his staff succeed at UND, we will need to see the High Performance Center completed so that UND has locker rooms, coaching offices, meeting rooms, etc. that are up to contemporary standards. NDSU's Fargodome facilities blow Memorial Stadium's out of the water (cold hard truth, sorry). Watch if you dare:
  11. OC's look really good when they have better players.
  12. Big Sky Conference's Weber State put up one hell of a fight. Many chances for Weber State to win. Congrats to them, but James Madison University ultimately wins and moves on, 31-28. Big Sky Conference now officially out of the playoffs.
  13. O'Brien and Poole weren't even on the roster by the start of 2017 and Larson was a true freshman. Man, you have to give your team a better chance than that - no room for error at all and it showed. Pretty sure Bubba and Schmidt are out searching for at least a couple inside linebackers that can improve the run defense and depth. The inside linebacker position was horrid in 2017.
  14. Both the defense and the offense need to improve. Most concerning, the defense took the greatest step backwards from 2016 to 2017 (rushing yards allowed per game: 91.3 ypg in 2016; 187.9 ypg in 2017). Considering the head coach's background and/or forte, the defense should never regress like that.
  15. The defense was definitely the weakest link. It was concerning, though, how the offense couldn't pick up the slack; that unit did not suffer many injuries (at least relative to the defense). Furthermore, the weakest areas of the defense in 2017, corner and inside linebacker, were supposedly coached by the two "leaders" of the program, Schmidt and Bubba, respectively. That is troubling. The defense gave up over twice as many rushing yards in 2017 (187.9 ypg) compared to 2016 (91.3 ypg). That independently determined the direction of the 2017 season: downhill (as in bad). UND even gave up far less rushing yards in 2014, Bubba's first season as UND head coach (with Mussman's "train wreck" players). I know, injuries. Let's hope the defense gets back to its 2014-2016 form in 2018; that will make a huge difference.
  16. And with that random thought comes news: Bob Nielson has been offered an FBS head coaching position at Kent State. But hey, some people on this board had better alternative facts than me. Good for you people.
  17. UND has to surpass; only reasonable option. NDSU has built up their program within the FCS to where they just aren't going to lose more than a game or two often. They definitely aren't going to be going 3-8 with a few injuries anytime soon. From that perspective, UND Fighting Hawks Football has to improve.
  18. Hell, if Minot State or the University of Mary announced players were leaving, I think UND should consider recruiting them ... Of course I'm exaggerating but I honestly think all FBS dropdowns that play QB, OL, LB, or DB should be considered by UND (especially those with good character from Big 10 schools). UND desperately needs talent at those four position groups.
  19. I agree. UND needs to do very well at recruiting in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in order to be a championship level program. They just won't be able to recruit enough annual talent completely avoiding that. *Unfortunately, after the Big 10 schools, NDSU is almost always next in line for those local kids. UND wins 1/10 (10%) of those battles, if that* Bubba and his staff need to stop hoping for local miracles (recruiting kids with no DI offers) and start winning over talent that is highly touted. Of course, they may also need *some* talent out of the area due to NDSU's overwhelming presence, but lately they haven't shown the ability to really even do that. The 2017 season really brought forward the recruiting concerns for me. The backups (mostly freshmen) that played may not be instant all-americans or even all-conference types, but they should at least show flashes (AT THE VERY LEAST). Many did not even show that. Bubba and his staff need some recruiting hits (success stories) for 2018 or else UND needs a new staff if not simply for just more competent recruiting.
  20. I completely agree with this. The MVFC move was a tremendous move for UND. Congrats to Kennedy and Bubba (and whoever else) for making that happen.
  21. "Borderline" or almost doesn't cut it. UND wasn't in the playoffs in 2015 and they choked (at home) under the pressure in the 2016 playoffs. I am concerned with the leadership. We all recently saw what happened in 2017.
  22. I stated facts. People can do (or comment) with them as they wish.
  23. Correct, next year (2018) will determine if 2016 or 2017 was more in line with what UND football is currently capable of.
  24. This really summarizes my recent posts nicely. This Saturday, 3 of the 4 DI Dakota schools will be playing a playoff football game. Guess which school isn't participating? But yet, UND is right where we want them - no changes. Let's just give them time and hope for better luck. There is pathological perception within the UND fan base.
  25. UND and USD started the DI transition the same time. They were both in the Great West. They both became playoff eligible the same time. They both moved to their current conferences at the same time (MVFC -SD, BSC - UND). I don't know what kind of special treatment you expect for UND relative to USD, but it's not going to happen unless you want to maintain simple "homer" status. I understand you are indeed @homer now at least.
