All very true. Definitely a good opportunity for UND @ South Dakota State tomorrow, will they capitalize?
-
Sure, moral victories, got it. UND needs to play much better than they did at Utah State, USD, SIU, and Missouri State in order to beat SDSU. Need to win turnover battle and be disciplined.
-
Win the damn game. Don’t worry about playoffs until after the game, as all for not if UND doesn’t beat SDSU. Going to be tough based on how poor UND has played on the road this season. MUST DO: UND is going to have to win turnover battle and minimize penalties to win.

Definitely adding much needed speed to WR group. Good addition!
-
Well, I for one would hope the linebackers stay good as well. I mean, if you recruit all positions well on defense, you end up with a good defense… Eureka!

I have accepted “this” since Schuster’s spring season. As have nearly all UND fans, just some more so than others. I disagree with some on their degree of support. There apparently is no QB on this roster *currently* better than Schuster, and I never once have made the statement that Schuster should be benched now. With that said, my simple point is UND needs to do better at that position to get to the top. I hope 2022 has some new light. Accept it. Move on. Pay attention. Don’t contort the truth. Thanks. Go UND.

“Check down Tommy” ain’t the second coming, just accept it and move on. Thanks. Go UND. Hope he does well but he’s not immune to criticism.

Freund was OC in 2019 with Ketteringham.
-
Very good in 2021 spring; team had 80% red zone TD rate. Fell apart against good teams on road, NDSU and JMU, though. What happened to Schuster and offense this season? That is real concern. Regression is a worry (and apparently reality); team returned enough talent that they should have improved. Now with offensive line losing major talent (NFL talent - Waletzko), 2022 will be interesting.

Staple of the Bubba philosophy, but, hey, when you’re winning, you can go for it from your own 20…
-
46 is almost twice as much as 35? Interesting And no fan of UND is advocating for 3 plays and a punt, but nice try (straw man fail).
-
In 2019, with Ketteringham, UND scored a TD on 71% of redzone trips (overall scored on 33/35 trips). This season, with Schuster, UND only scoring a TD on trips in redzone 52% of the time (overall scored on only 31/46 trips). Crazy how once a narrative starts, people just roll with it and don't form an opinion for themselves. If Ketteringham was so tough on drives, supposedly, what does that make Schuster?
-
Yes. Unfortunately, this season, UND only scores a TD on 52% of trips. Not good.
-
2019: Ketteringham 16 TDs to 10 interceptions. Not quite “intercept king” or whatever but okay then …
-
2019 red zone offense was much better than 2021. 2020 (spring 2021) the best, and, as one would expect, best team result wise. 2019: 35 red zone attempts, 33 scores, 25 touchdowns. 71% touchdown conversion. 2020: 25 red zone attempts, 22 scores, 20 touchdowns. 80% touchdown conversion 2021: 46 red zone attempts, 31 scores, 24 touchdowns. 52% touchdown conversion

Bit of hyperbole with “amazing” job in the packet. The scheme is one based on quick passing game, limiting defenses ability to get a sack. Schuster is perhaps not “brick foot” for what it is worth, but he’s not mobile either in my opinion.
-
2019: und offense was all about throwing the ball, no running game. There were minimal deep shots, again due to lack of personnel capable of doing that, but Toivonen and Wanzek were great mid-range possession receivers. 2019 avg per pass attempt actually less than in 2021. With 2020 (spring 2021) and 2021, major difference is improved running game with Otis Weah. 2019: 262 passing ypg, avg 6.69 per pass attempt; 121.8 rushing ypg, avg 4.2 per rush attempt. 2021: 242 passing ypg, avg 6.92 per pass attempt, 168.2 rushing ypg, avg 5 per rush attempt

Quincy Patterson can run but obviously couldn’t pass worth a damn. QB position still requires decision making and passing accuracy far before running ability and arm strength, which I suppose is why Schuster gets the nod over Vaughn. With all that said, the best CFB teams often have a QB that can do a little bit of everything - it’s the way contemporary football is played. I think some around UND football and this board still expect the game to be played like it was in the 1990s. Playing a brick foot quarterback won’t get the job done. As for Vaughn, he can move and has a bigger arm than Schuster, that I am certain; but if you can’t pass accurately or make good decisions with the ball, you can’t start.
-
Very perplexing bias you have there. Vaughn is not slower than Schuster. If Vaughn was somehow less of a running threat, he shouldn’t see the field at all in current setup as a “wildcat” QB. And don’t give me the “he’s a big bodied guy” reason for why he see’s the field, because if that is the only reason why Freund is playing him, then this offense is in worse hands than we thought.
-
Trey Feeney is a way better athlete than Schuster, that’s obvious, but Vaughn is a better athlete than Schuster also. Purely being a better athlete is not what Freund values in his QBs, obviously. Bubba and Freund value decision-making and leadership above all else, which is not necessary wrong.
-
Matt Waletzko.
-
Putting Quincy Vaughn into the game in these situation is Freund’s way of handling short yardage and red zone, but it really isn’t that great of a strategy based on numbers. Plus, in some ways, it tips the defense to what is about to happen. From my perspective, I’d much rather have a multidimensional QB that can do it all, where the defense has to prepare for everything, rather than two quarterbacks that can only do somethings.

First off, NFL to NCAA football is not a direct comparison. Second of all, at that point in his career, #9 had plenty of deficiencies, and those New Orleans teams were nothing too special. Other than that, I do think that is a solid comparison to what UND does.
