  1. Bison fans were saying the same thing about the REA while it was being built, that we could never fill it and it was a waste of money. UND has a much larger fan base than NDSU, it's not even close. We could easily have attendance well over 25,000 in the right conference, with a good team, and a great facility. I'm so sick of Bison fans coming to our boards to spit poison on our potential. UND is the flag ship institution in the state of North Dakota and that name recognition is extremely attractive to expanding conferences, it's the main reason the Big Sky sent us an invitation and sent you a rejection letter. We have to start building toward the future and that involves bringing football back to campus in a stadium that will be the toast of FCS. We have to think bigger because we are better! Please go troll somewhere else.

Wow, easy there I don't want to turn this into a Sioux vs. Bison thing. Although I did ask nicely to start with that NDSU fans not comment so I geuss if you want you can bite there head off its justified.

Anyway my dad was in on some of those meetings in 07 that Geaux has linked about the future stadium. He thought 25,000 was a bit too big but 15,000-18,000 might be more feasible. It kind of has that if you built they will come feel. I agree about the REA everyone thought that was too large and Ralph actually wanted the thing to be 15,000 cap. but was talked out of it. Also my brother told me the location he had heard about for a new stadium would be Ray Richards Golf course. I thought that was a bit odd.

  2. I had heard the same thing, his name is Dave Fennell (allegedly), he played at UND in the early 1970's and went on to become a Canadian League hall of famer. I believe he went on to become CEO of a couple of gold mines in Canada. This rumor has been floating around for almost a year and although nothing substantial has come of it yet, I do think it's a possibility. My question is, will $30 million build a stadium nice enough for a growing UND (not that I wouldn't be grateful for that much of a donation), it would seem that additional funds would need to be raised on top of that amount. I really hope this rumor is true and that we get a nice new stadium at UND named after one of our most successful players, the Alerus is a horrible place to watch football.

I wouldn't even bring up the subject but I remember in 1995 or 96 when my dad was telling me about Ralph donating 50 or 60 million for a new rink. I said he was dreaming and then the guy ends up donating double that amount. So anything is possible. My brother also told me where the proposed site is at, but I can't remember what he said now.

  3. Congrats Brett, I wish you luck. Don't let the best years of life end up in Grand Forks ND or in some junior hockey rink in Canada. Your best years are ahead of you. I hope to see you on TV a couple of years from now on Saturday night (CBC hockey night in Canada).

  4. I'm not a believer in this story, but my brother told me this last week. He tells me (not a source, funny ha) that there is some ex sioux football player who is a highly successful businessman in Canada (possibly oil sands related), who is considering a 30 plus million dollar donation to build a new football stadium. I don't want to talk about the pros and cons of a new stadium or if NDSU fan thinks this is a joke. I just want to know if someone else has heard this and if there is any validity to the tale.

  5. I think that part of the problem at UND with FB attendance is the coverage that the team gets. Maybe I am wrong, but I do not think that the Herald, Sioux Insider, or UND athletic site are anywhere near ready for a DI situation. I went to the UND FB site and got a spring update on the team. It had some gal interviewing Emmitt Lynch about his ballroom dance teaching. There are some videos in there about various position groups etc. and there are a few articles here and there about the QB competition, but they are not easy to find as weblinks and in general the coverage of the major D1 sport other than hockey just plain is terrible, at least from my point of view and with my internet resources. Other opinions?

I agree with the fact that the most circulated media that covers Sioux football is the Herald and they in my opinion and yours apparently are not doing a very good job. I think Sioux insider does as good of a job as two guys not getting paid can do and i appreciate very much. It just isn't circulated to the average joe who may or may not show on a Saturday game without some interest from the local media. Schlossman (spelling I know) does a very good job with hockey but that's his job. It always seems as if Nelson and Miller are two to three days behind Sioux insider and just paraphrase off of what they report. I know they have jobs and need to report on other stuff but I would like to see football become more of a priority. In time I believe this will be the case. HOPEFULLY!

  6. I think the season is broke down into three categories FBS teams, FCS teams and non D-1 teams. I think UND plays the FBS teams tough but lose both by 10-14 points. They go 3-2 against FCS teams losing to one of the California teams and Southern Utah and they sweep the non D-1 teams. This leaves them with a 7-4 record, respectable but not great. I of course would love to see a upset of Idaho and then run the table. Yet, after last year I can't in my right mind predict that but can hope for something between that and 7-4.

  7. Somewhat tru dat ^, but it was actually when star running back (now deceased) Reggie Scott from GA was charged with 5, yes, 5, counts of sexual misconduct, and ended up pleading to 1, yes 1, count of disorderly conduct. Makes a guy wonder, doesn't it?

That was the incident i was referring to. A back up QB was also arrested with him.

  8. "I will fight you til' you die" Rocky Hager circa 1996]

Does this quote take you back at all? That guy wrote the book on broom and rug operation. I actually enjoyed the guy. He was such an a**hole. Can anyone tell me who Rocky said this too?

Bobber Entzion, the former UND'er who got busted in Omaha for something--can't remember what it was. Do you? Rocky got his redemption there is all I know.

Bobber set Rocky up for failure when Rocky wanted to take apppropriate disciplinary action. Entzion would trump what Rocky wanted to do, and then secretly leak the story to media personalities before Rocky was allowed to take the action he wanted, thereby making it look as though Rocky was the culprit. Yes, Bobber was that evil, but we know the rest of the story from Omaha, don't we????!!!

Well, he may have said it to Bob "light in the loafers" Entzion, but he also said it to a police officer after he arrested a couple of NDSU players. I love a guy that will go as far as threatening law enforcement to stick up for his players. Again, I found the guy entertaining but he wasn't running a striaght up program. He was really old school.

  9. I hope the hockey player makes a full recovery, but the GF media has hardly been investigating this situation. It is a broom and rug operation up there.

  10. Well, Josh Murray I hope you read this and I want to thank you for what you have done at UND. No, I'm not being an ass. You have been a great athlete here and I wish the best for you in the future. Don't let the best years of your life fall on a football field whether it is in Wisconsin or North Dakota. You have a long life ahead of you, take advantage of what has been given to you at this point and go with it. BEST OF LUCK!

  11. McFeely is an A$$! He has small man syndrome and hates UND.

Why even keep track of what is going on in Fargo? The Force has one recruit for the hockey team in which Brad does a fantastic job of keeping us informed. McFeely who? Let him cover NDSU stuff. Apparently from what I hear NDSU did not get good coverage of signing day. Maybe he should care less of what happens in GF and worry about Fargo stuff. Again NDSU and UND do not play in football, until then worry about the teams we do play. If you want to talk Volleyball, Baseball or Basketball (only mens) go to a different thread.

  12. I only meant that to show what a visceral reaction one would get if they even suggest a return to the Big Sky.

I don't think the NCAA has ever seriously considered busting someone back to FCS status. If anything, they've been allowing marginal programs to move up. Also, unless this is butts-in-the-seats, universities can sell tickets inexpensively to some big individual or corporate donor, or they can play one "home" game at another site (Idaho did this by playing "home" games at nearby Washington State, including one game against WSU itself! And they could do it by playing a game in Pullman or Boise if needed). I don't really see Idaho being told to go back by the NCAA.

Your right, I don't see NCAA sending them back to FCS either, but funnier things have happened. Also I know what you were getting at with Idaho fans. I just wanted to put that line in there for certain visitors from other schools to read.

  13. I dare anyone to go onto the Vandal forum and suggest they go back to FCS and the Big Sky: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=205

After hearing venom that would make a Bison fan blush, they will point out that the 12-15K they average now is a lot better than what they averaged in the Big Sky (when Boise State and Nevada were still there and Northern Colorado, Sacramento State and Southern Utah weren't). Many of them will advocate dropping football before being in a league that includes very few peer institutions, and schools they see themselves as better than academically and athletically (particularly the "directional schools" Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Eastern Washington, Portland State, etc...). The only BSC school they feel an affinity for is Montana. It might not be rational, but that's the view from the Vandal faithful.

If that article I posted earlier was true nobody has to tell them anything, the NCAA will. Apparently they haven't touched an average attendance of 15,000 for two seasons (maybe longer I don't know) and that is apparently what they need to remain in the BCS. How or if they enforce it is beyond me, but the article also states the NCAA is thinking about moving the required average attendance to 17,000. That would surpass there current stadium capacity which is 16,000, although there is some current planning (construction?) to increase there capacity.

Either way I'm not going on any other schools forum to tell them what they should. No way, I don't like it when other schools fans do it here and I won't do it other schools.

  14. My take on Idaho is all or nothing. I don't like the everything except football. The Big Sky kind of holds all the chips when dealing with Idaho. The big brains at Idaho will soon see that the Big Sky is where they belong and shoul've never left.

You're probably right on Idaho coming back to the Big Sky. I looked and dating back to 2002, with the exception of a 09' season in which they went 8-5 with a bowl game win, they have had a losing record every year. Also there attendance ranks 118 out of 120 FBS teams ahead of Ball State and Akron. Even if they were to average a sell out that would only push them to 110th out of 120.

  15. Cal Poly played them near the end of the year as I recall and led until the last few minutes and had the ball moving when time ran out. Poly had some game and UW took them too lightly. May happen again. Good luck Coyotes. Wish UND had a marquee game like this. As an alum I am very disappointed. The nickname has hurt us more in FB than in any other sport.

Actually the game in question (UW vs Cal Poly) was a 2008 35-36 loss in OT. Cal Poly missed three extra points that game and a 46 yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the game. They then missed their third extra point of the game in OT, hence the one point loss.
