  1. since the letter has been referenced again, something caught my eye that I had just read over before -

... the Presidents were comfortable with your personal position and the position that the University has taken ...

Considering the overall tone of the letter --- huh?

Still fels like UND is between a rock and a hard place & the NCAA has found help to push the rock. :(

  2. I don't blame Fetch for thinking the way he does. He believes there is still a chance to save the name, and I hope there is a miracle out there that will save it; but I am not betting the farm anymore on this issue. We have had repeated hopes crushed in saving the name. When it looks like a light, boom out goes that light. Here were the chances of hope in this whole issue and what crushed that hope:

2007 lawsuit: there was hope that Janke would rule in favor of UND ....wrong ends in a stalemate with UND having to get 2 tribal approvals in 3 years.

Spirit Lake approves tribe wide vote...ends with 67% approval looking good until.....

Standing Rock Chair RHHIT and his tribal council disapprove of the name.

One time Sioux nickname supporter Charles Murphy is voted in and RHHIT is voted out looking good until.... NO tribewide vote.

2011 ND legislature saves name with a ND state law looking good until.....BSC threatens to kick us out, and NCAA does not reverse its decision on the policy.

Mr Carlson Dalrymple goes to Indianapolis and NCAA still doesn't reverse its decision on the policy. Hopes and dreams are once again crushed.

See a pattern. Its gotta stop and that letter from the BSC to Kelley was the final straw. Its over. Hope IMO is gone. So call us Chicken Littles but as Star2City would say...those are facts!

added one more line and edited for Fetch. agreed.

  3. 2013 the BTHC starts we have 2 years to come down this road about not playing Minny/Wisconsin. We don't go on the H&A list until August 15 so a lot can happen between now and then.

I have to admit, I am holding out hope that Mr Carlson can get somewhere with the NCAA next month, but I am not holding my breath. I do not think they will give two cents worth of thought to any of UND & the North Dakota legislature's statements. They have a lot more (important problems like Ohio State, Auburn and now today North Carolina) on their plates than an agreement with the ND SBoHE that has already been signed and in place for almost 4 years. I have gained a lot of respect for Darrell the past week as he has written some well thought-out posts and makes a lot of sense in the face of the new Big Sky developments.

That being said, I admit I am joining the chicken littles, as Fetch calls it, and saying enough is enough. Losing the hockey rivalries with Minnesota and Wisconsin is bad enough, but losing the conference affiliation in the Big Sky has the potential to make UND's athletic programs obscure in independence. UND cannot prosper in independence like the other Fighting ND, or even like BYU, and may even have trouble surviving.

With the threat of the WCHA losing stature because of the Big Ten Hockey Conference (whether they have been competetive or not the last couple of years, the Gophers and Badgers bring recognized names to the WCHA), can UND really afford to lose them as out of conference games? Many have said it will hurt them more than UND, but it will hurt the WCHA's public perception because non-hockey states recognize Minnesota and Wisconsin, but Bemidji, Minnesota State, Nebraska Omaha - not so much. The Big Ten Hockey Conference will have instant credibility because it is the Big Ten, everyone knows names like Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State. It may even benefit all of college hockey to have the BTHC.

Fetch, your letter to the NCAA is awesome. Again, I just don't think the NCAA cares what Fighting Sioux supporters or even the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe themselves say anymore. I hope to be proven wrong, but we need to prepare ourselves for moving forward without the Fighting Sioux name or logo. With all due respect to DaveK, I will continue to be a fan of UND, whether they are the Flickertails, Fighting Sioux, Spirit Lake Sioux or even Spirit.

  4. ... To be revealed: If Douple had further implicated the SBoHE and NDSU leadership in the Summit fiasco, Douple would have been fired, as the SBoHE is also Douple's boss...

Sorry, Star, I don't follow this connection. How is the NDSBoHE Douple's boss? To make that connection through NDSU's (& UND's pending) conference affiliation and the presidents of those institutions seems to be a bit of a stretch.

  5. Stanford's nickname is cardinal -- their primary color, not the bird as in the St. Louis Cardninals.

Since being the Whites or the Blacks would more than likely also be ruled hostile and abusive, are you suggesting the Sioux become the Kelly or the Green? ;)

  6. My response was too the entire post, not just the WAC reference. Go back and read that post of DF's and really, really give it some critical thought. HINT: USD did not even follow/join UND in the BSC, now he has them and other Dakota schools going with UND to the WAC???!!!!! Un-effin believable if you just think about it even a little bit!!

If you actually read my first post on this idea (if memory serves, it was somewhere in the Sioux Name thread), CAS, you would have seen the disclaimer that I did not think this was a good idea. Just floating alternatives to having to give up the Fighting Sioux name.

I am gratified that you were amused. :)

  7. As much as going to the Big Sky is the ring everyone is grabbing for since NDSU & SDSU went D-I, going to the WAC with the Fighting Sioux nickname does bear some consideration versus dropping the name to get into the Big Sky. Not saying its the best of all worlds, but it should be thoughtfully considerd before being dismissed. And again, with Denver already a member, it could be the start of a post Big Ten Hockey hockey conference.

  8. You know, there is a certain appeal to beating NDSU to FBS. The WAC needs teams like UND, for the BSC, its optional. If UND were to go to the WAC, it may pull along teams such as Montana, Montana State and even the other 3 Dakotas. THAT would be an interesting WAC along with Idaho, Denver, Utah State. It may also be a home for some of UND's olympic sports that the BSC doesn't provide. And last, with Denver already there, it could be the beginning of a new post Big Ten Hockey hockey conference.

  9. The NCAA hasn't focused on UND for a while. The lawsuit settled years ago and the NCAA declined the opportunity to come to ND to revisit the nickname issue. The NCAA has moved on. It's time for UND to move on too. There is too much going for UND sports right now to let the nickname hold the school back.

The NCAA considers this matter settled. They have no incentive to revisit it with all the other stuff (Ohio State, Tennessee, Auburn, Texas, Southern Cal, et al) on their plate right now. UND is now caught in a perfect storm and if we think we are so important that the NCAA is giving any thought at all to the Fighting Sioux nickname, we need a reality check. The Big Sky reignited interest in Sioux athletics that has not been there since the transition to DI began. I am surprising myself by moving so quickly to the dark side, but fighting the NCAA didn't sound nearly as daunting when it seemed that the Big Sky was in our corner.

  10. According to a Jon Kasper, Assistant Commissioner in charge of Media Relations for the Big Sky Conference, the nickname has not been an issue for anyone in the Big Sky.

  11. We lost our house in Minot Monday night. Probably to the main level by now. Not looking forward to the messy cleanup, but I'm sure some folks on this board have been through it.

Condolences to you & your family. Hope you get back in soon and the damage is minimal.

  12. While the US can demand whatever they want, the Rafferty and Alameda dams in Sask on the Souris are full also, and have to release water, just as Lake Darling and, on the Missouri, Garrison and Fort Peck are doing. The watershed for all major rivers are full and flooded, and continue to add to the levels in the Missouri and Mouse Rivers. There is no room for anyone to store any more water.

From what I hear, Devils Lake is full too, and has been for a few years... This rain won't be helping them any, either.

  13. I just want to give my prayers to any fellow people residing in Minot and Bismarck.

Evacuations have been ordered in areas of Minot by tomorrow night.

    KXMC News - Minot

Disclaimer: this is a mean-spirited reply and may be very tongue-in-cheek... Since Canada will not allow the Devils Lake water to flow in to the Sheyenne River System to help alleviate the Devils Lake problems, why don't we demand that they keep their water that is flowing into the US via the Mouse/Souris and causing all the problems for Minot?

  14. If he schedules DII/NAIA teams over USD then Houston we have a problem.

I would love to have a Dakota rotation with all 4 Dakota teams.

Couldn't find USD & SDSU's 2012, 2013 or 2014 schedules, but both UND and NDSU have open dates September 21, 2013 and September 13, 2014. On top of that, UND opens against SD School of Mines Thursday, August 30, 2012. NDSU is open that weekend. What is the delay in plugging USD, NDSU, SDSU and even UNI into those holes and engaging some old friends and rivals? UND does have a game vs USD this fall and SDSU in 2013. That could be the start of a nice out of conference rotation.

  15. In spite of whomever was the best or worst team in the Dakotas that year, the loss by UND to SFU was probably the most embarassing loss in school history. It fits well with the losses by UM to NDSU and USD with Mason and Brewster at the helm. Whether Mussman can erase that loss with future success remains to be seen, but undoubtedly it is a scar on his resume in my book along with an embarassing performance at Idaho and a very poor performance at SDSU last year. The games at NIU and TT were moral victories to an extent, but perhaps those teams overlooked UND like UND overlooked SFU. The game is one of emotion. As coaching goes, performance can be impacted by rhetoric or game plan. I am still unconvinced that Mussman is the guy to lead this program to the level it needs to be. I will give him two more years. Looking for a really good year this year with perhaps one major upset. If not, then maybe a coaching change is in order.

What about Nielson at Minnesota Duluth? If this is another season like last, Nielson should be on Faison's radar, and he may not be available in two years!

  16. The Sioux, Denver, and CC are known for reciprocation and traveling to any rink, where Minnesota and Wisconsin try to cherry pick and only play in their building. Who would you want to play?

My speculation is that the WCHA will stick together and sign a non-conference deal that you have to play every WCHA team on a rotating schedule. This will allow Wisconsin an excuse to

  17. I've been checking out the EGrizz message board over the past week and I see nothing that would indicate that Montana or Montana State fans are upset about UND joining the league, quite the opposite actually. However, I must say it is amusing how Montana fans think that they are the greatest team and could contend against teams like Auburn, Tennessee, and Ohio State. Although I applaud their loyalty and enthusiasm, they seem to think they should be playing in a BCS conference and not the Big Sky and that most of their conference is beneath them somehow. In my opinion schools like UM, MSU, UND, NDSU, USD, SDSU, Idaho and maybe a couple of others should highly consider forming an FBS conference to take the WAC's place once it folds (assuming each institution has the appropriate facilities). What do you think about this idea?

Would you be able to get Wyoming from the MWC? They would be a good geographic fit and already have an FBS program.

  18. Idaho and/or Fresno St...any chance for a FBS win? I say we pull the upset over Idaho. But for the rest of the season:

    ...

8-3 overall and 3-1 in the GWFC plus a FBS win. I think this will be our turnaround year with "THE" year only 21 months away. If we have a losing season or losses to the non D1 teams Mussman's job I think will be in jeopardy.

Bleacher Report: 10 FBS Teams That Could Lose to an FCS Team

The Sioux will also be eager to erase the scars of 2010, and the best way to start would be with a momentum-building win against Idaho on September 10.
