  1. So, as long as the NCAA will not let UND host football playoff games, maybe the Sioux should re-examine FBS and the WAC. Bowl games are not under the control of the NCAA, the WAC is still desperately in need of help to survive, football would have to move back to an expanded Memorial Stadium (at least for early season games) and the Sioux could effectively thumb their noses at the PC crowd at the NCAA. Not advocatin' (still think the Big Sky will have a better reputation going forward than the WAC), just ponderin'...

  2. ... Does a conference want its regular season championship worth something beyond seeding or not? ...

...The #1 team in summit earns the right to play the #8 team and gets a day of between the quarters and the semis. The #1 seed does not see the #2 or #3 seed until the finals...

    so, what's your point Herd?

  3. not that this is the only way to address this issue with your senator, bringing up the referendum idea...

    subject: HB 1263

    Dear Senator *********,

Realizing that you are not on the education committee, but since you are the senator for my district, you are my connection. In regards to the House bill crossing over to the senate to retain the Fighting Sioux nickname for the University of North Dakota, would you be willing to make the following suggestion to someone in the proper position/committee? If the state would add a referral vote to the bill, the vote from Sioux County could be a de facto vote of the people of the Standing Rock tribe in gaining the tribe

  4. Wasn't there UND sorority or frat party a few years ago with a "Cowboys & Indian" theme that caught some attention??

and there would never be another party like that if the nickname changed?

  5. The good thing about UNC's success the past few years is that it shows what is possible. They were one of the lesser programs in the NCC back in the day, and struggled badly during the transition. I doubt anybody expected they'd ever be a legitimately good mid-major program, but that's exactly what they are right now.

On the other hand, they were a very good football program that has not been able to get out of the bottom half of the Big Sky standings. The Sioux football program has their work cut out for them, as do the BB teams.

  6. Unfortunately, the more you contain the spring melt runoff, the higher the contained water must rise. Add that to the other things mentioned here and the fact that the Red tries to flow north into still frozen rivers and lakes and the flood control dikes will continue to need to go up. Could be even worse when Devils Lake finally breaks out of its containment and goes into the Sheyenne basin.

  7. Good comment from former Gov. Olson in this article

Former Gov. Olson, participating via telephone from his home in Arizona, suggested that many North Dakotans are wondering why the university feels compelled to move as fast as it has, especially given the revival of the nickname issue at the Legislature.

  8. I dare anyone to go onto the Vandal forum and suggest they go back to FCS and the Big Sky: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=205

After hearing venom that would make a Bison fan blush, they will point out that the 12-15K they average now is a lot better than what they averaged in the Big Sky (when Boise State and Nevada were still there and Northern Colorado, Sacramento State and Southern Utah weren't). Many of them will advocate dropping football before being in a league that includes very few peer institutions, and schools they see themselves as better than academically and athletically (particularly the "directional schools" Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Eastern Washington, Portland State, etc...). The only BSC school they feel an affinity for is Montana. It might not be rational, but that's the view from the Vandal faithful.

The fans may consider only Montana to be a peer, but I would be willing to wager that the administration would also consider Montana State, maybe Idaho State, and yes, North Dakota to be peers. That said, I agree that there is very little possibility that Idaho will return to the Big Sky.

  9. Instead of the legislature passing the bills that have been proposed, which would have some potentially very negative effects on the NCAA-UND relationship, I'd like the legislature to go down another path:

    - Place the Sioux name as the perpetual nickname of UND on the ballot, so all ND voters have a say.

    - Since Sioux County is essentially the Standing Rock reservation, the votes of Sioux County would be a de facto Standing Rock vote.

    - If the vote in both Sioux County and North Dakota affirms the nickname, the AG would be required to petition the NCAA for the reinstatement of the Fighting Sioux name, as all requirements of the NCAA would then have been met. The NCAA would have to fold based on this type of democratic action.

If the legislature doesn't impose a statewide vote, the same measure could be put in place by gaining voters signature for an initiative.

If the principles of our representative democracy are properly used, the tyranny of PC politics can and will be defeated.

I still think this is the best idea that has been proposed. Well thought out and would give UND and the AG some beef in front of the NCAA. Anyone with a legislator's ear should have them get this into the floor discussion of the bill. After reading the testimony that was in the paper, I think the people should be heard and not bleeding heart liberal college professor types (which includes those who sit on the National Collegiate Athletic Association committees). The people of the tribes. If the legislature won't put it to a vote of the people, the people do have the power to put it on the ballot by initiative.

  10. If UND wants to win games, let (or make) Schuler shoot the ball more often. Also being able to make free throws at a better percentage than a sixth grade girls team might be nice.

Seriously. 42% from the line? :glare:

  11. Whiteys will reopen, and the new owners should put the old menu back in place, and hire people who give a darn.

I go to Red Lobster, and get great customer service nearly 100% of the time, and that is freaking Red Lobster, a chain restaurant. Why can't a local legendary place like Whitey's do the same?

Pre flood they had the best onion rings and hard rolls there was. In the restaurant business management is everything.

    2 + 2 = new Whitey's owners should hire Red Lobster's Dining Room & Kitchen Managers

This is actually one of if not the best solutions that has come forward since this whole thing started. Well said, star!

  13. Yeah it does, when it comes to pro sports it does wash out. College is a whole different ball game. I'd say the basically every Packer fan I know wasn't raised a Packer fan by there parents, so that argument doesn't work.

But I'm a type of person that expects a person to show respect to their home teams. Being born and raised in Grand Forks, I expect people in Grand Forks to cheer for UND, not the Gophers. So thats a whole different argument, but it blows my mind when I have met kids who are Gopher fans from GF.

but how about the twin cities kids who come to GF & play for the Sioux?

  14. Sorry Lomack but that's a silly argument. You can find random examples of crude people of all ethnicities treating others poorly. It happens everywhere, always has. But, that has nothing to do with the respectful way UND has used the Sioux name for decades. Or, the incredible educational opportunities and programs for Native Americans on the UND campus. The history of treatment of the Native Americans over the last 200 years isn't always something to be proud of. But, the use of and respect for the Sioux nickname by UND and Sioux fans has always been about connecting our athletic teams to a strong, proud and regional people group we want to be identified with. Using a few random anonymous postings to justify your argument shows how silly it is.

member since '06 and your first post was worth the wait. well said, Sioux_FF.

  15. I guess this reminds me of the old days in the WCHA:

    WCHA Standings

    1. Wisconsin

    2. Minnesota

    3. North Dakota

    4. Minnesota Duluth

This is how the Women's standings are right now. Makes me a little nostalgic for the old WCHA of the 70s and 80s. (the teams, not the order)
