He really kind of exploded this season. Thief River like East Grand Forks and Warroad as well does play a pretty solid schedule though so it isn't like his stats are too inflated which is often the case with kids from Southern MN class A schools. TRF played 6 AA schools Bemidji and Roseau twice each, Moorhead, and Tartan. Also played traditionally good class A schools outside their section in Blake, Breck, Hermantown, and Totino-Grace as well as Duluth Denfield and Hibbing who were solid this year.

This was my 5th time seeing him this year and I like his game. He has a ton of speed, good hands, and a good shot. Also did his job in his own zone and made a couple nice defensive plays that led to offense. Also really liked the defenseman Brendan Bushy for TRF he has good size and seems like a fluid skater with skill. Really good vision of the ice and knows when to push the pace and when he should slow it down. Will be good to see them against a good quick Breck team with some solid prospects of their own especially Ellingson and Blake.

Really???  I've seen him live and didn't ever notice him make a defensive play.  Thought he was very non-existent in his own zone and too often looked to leave zone early for a rush.  Put it this way...EGF in the section championship held TRF to like 4 shots and 3 shots (one empty netter) in second and third period.  EGF controlled the offensive zone and TRF was the faster team and hit more.

  2. Didn't see a season thread so I suppose the final home game is the best spot for this:

We were second in the all of D1 for free throw %.  Big thanks to football team for that.

Also don't remember if this was posted, but Hooker received the mid-major national player of the week along with Big Sky player of the week.

I have Altell for phone & since Direct & Altel merged I have been interested in Direct TV especially for the Lake but we get more Sioux Hockey from Midco don't we ? Plus I have Internet from Midco & have never had a problem with Midco since they started

What decade are you in???  I thought they were bought out by Verizon and had to sell off to AT&T up here years ago.  Didn't think they existed anywhere still.

Ethan Johnson of TRF scores 4 goals in the third against EGF to overcome a 2-0 deficit.  Will someone lock him up before he plays junior hockey?

I'm going to preface this with only seeing him play once this year and wasn't specifically watching for him.  He's good, but I think Loven from EGF is better complete game or was last year for tourney run (been injured all year).  Johnson does have speed but other than a rush you don't really notice him.  His line mates did most of the work tonight other than the one great move to beat D and then go top shelf backhand.  Fourth goal was empty netter.  Didn't really notice him shoot other than around the net to get read on that.  Same in D end.  Didn't notice him make a play until empty netter, but again wasn't watching only him the whole time.  Doesn't seem to dominate a game the way a Bowen, Yon or Loven did.  Those guys you just always seemed to be aware of when they were on the ice.

  5. It's a 2-3 zone but the bottom wings come up very high to guard and stay there.  Normally once one of the top two guys get to the wing the bottom guy would drop off.  By doing this Weber wasn't able to reverse the ball.  I kept waiting for us to take a chance and trap out of it.  I guess in theory it morphs into a 3-2 because of this.  It also helped how well our inside guys defended as we didn't need the wing back down fronting.

It was also interesting to see that after initial transition we would then switch to man during the same possession.

That edict might have stemmed from a parent or two trying to encourage a player or two to play/ do things a certain way that may have been contrary to coaches' guidance.  Yes, some choppy waters to be sure, but the fact it's relatively staying  in house is a victory in itself.

I don't think so. I've delayed so long posting this info, but it seemed relevant with what I heard today. I did not get the impression that the parents seem to have any problem with philosophy.  So no I don't think the parents are forcing one direction or the other for their player.

It's not really home team message board fodder. But it was certainly a locker room issue. Let's just hope they continue their strong play and can keep the underclassmen intact in the offseason for next year and beyond.

I suppose I should also note that I've heard that players are not allowed to speak to parents about anything relating to what goes on with program.  This would explain why it's never gotten out what has happened.

It's probably best this hasn't gotten out, but not sure I've heard of this type of "fear???" when it comes to speaking about the goings on of a team.  Maybe it's more prevalent than I realize with D1 basketball.

But rivalry type drama? PSU: first game we got their d coordinator fired, second game was a defensive battle, third game was another defensive battle with us stopping them on the last play for like the 3 yard line, and this year was a great slobber knocker of a game and we tainted their record. Montana: us passing for 10000 yards on them, them blowing our doors off and going for two when up huge late in the game, then we knock out their golden boy rapist qb and all the other drama at the end of that one, then they blow our secondary apart with a third string QB. The Griz fans think we're a dirty team and below them. And PSU is always a good hard game. That's why they're our rivals in the big sky right now.

Agree 1000%, but Montana didn't think we'd win until we busted their chops and they wanted it this year.  Gotta think the same for MSU this upcoming year.  They were not happy.  Seems some fun things are developing.

  9. Did we ever find out the deal on suspensions?  i heard a rumor today that literally the girls were fighting???  Normally I wouldn't post this, but I haven't heard any other explanation and didn't even consider this.

Years ago i was told that girls teams win when they are getting along.  Guys teams get along when they are winning.

  10. Was late to the game as my own team had games, but it sure was nice to walk into a loud stadium and see a ten point lead.  waiting in line to buy tickets was miserable as you could hear how loud the crowd was.  Kudo's to the FB team and other athletes and students there.  Brought well needed atmosphere.  The swimming and "thong" salute were hilarious.  Even the blue hairs around me were laughing about the dropping of shorts for a thong.

These were my first two games live this week.  I hardly recognize this team compared to 2 years ago.  They are so fast and move the ball so well.  Crandel is about the only one that forces a shot and yet you can't help but love him because of how fast he is and how much energy he brings on D.

Hooker is so smooth that you don't even notice that he racks up over 15 points a game.  I don't get the hate on Shanks.  Refs definitely get him for some phantom fouls.  Hell the one Weber big didn't get his first foul until the end of the game yet was doing plenty of swinging and body work all game.  BTW I couldn't even figure out which big for them was their best player.  That is how well we played defensively and on the glass.

What a game and what a win.  Seriously debating if i should try and make it to Reno.

You know things are going right when Drick is hitting free throws.

    Yanku is good.

Also appreciate NAU having a good feed (as always) and I forgot how entertaining their announcer is.

    Benton sighting!

I believe he was raised in somewhere in western ND.  He is very good to listen to.

I'm in Hallock Mn for xmas & they have NHL network on Direct TV - will I be able to watch this ? When does it start ? I may stay all week :xmas:

I believe the whole tourney is on NHL network.  For the U.S. games they announce from a studio in the states and aren't actually at the game.  Starman is the analyst.

  13. A tournament with all the D1 Dakota schools wont happen since 3 of them are in the same conference. Coaches aren't going to want to play a conference game that early in the season or a 3rd time. SDSU (played FGCU last year, Middle Tennessee State this year) and USD ( UNLV last year, FGCU this year) will more than likely be playing annual games at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls during X-Mas break. I don't think either school would want to give up another home game. It's a nice idea, but it just wont happen.

I would like to have a home and home with UND every year rather than playing a D2 team though.

It does seem odd that UND doesn't do home and home with old NCC foes.  Or at least NDSU with amount of fans both schools bring in for game.

  14. Whether UND stays with Midco in the future or jumps to FSN, I would love to see them get Clay Matvick to be the play by play guy.  The guy is a hockey announcing stud and has done very well foe a long time.  I realize that he does work for the grand daddy of them all network (ESPN) but would be great to see a guy like him come in and be the voice of UND hockey on TV.  A pipe dream I know, but hey, why not!!

He is fantastic. SCSU alum but I don't hold that against him and he has always seemed very neutral. I'm not sure if he is finally an employee of ESPN or still contracts.  Does some basketball and football.  A couple years ago I even heard him calling an air race.

  15. Fun time and win for UND.  NDSU doesn't have much for players.  #11 is a stud tho.  I think she was like 5 of 7 from 3 and made another that got called off because of a foul.  Only other was #34 who can only drive left.

UND really made all the hustle plays.
