  1. Perhaps you're right for ONE SPORT (men's basketball), over ONE YEAR (2010-11), but historically the BSC has it all over the Summit and there are many other sports to consider, including women's volleyball and basketball.

Historically the Big Sky had Nevado, Idaho, Boise, Utah State etc but has replaced them with Portland St, Sac St, UNC, EWU, SUU, and UND.

With the current/future makeup of the conferences the Summit will be as good/slightly better than the BSC in the major sports

  2. Let's be honest, the current Summit is an upgrade over the Summit from the past and UND is not exactly a powerful basketball team. In both cases, the goal is the NCAA tournament and while, as posted by others, the BSC has had two teams in it in the past, both conferences are basically a one team league to the tournament. You can flip the RPI or Saragin ratings around and it wouldn't make any difference. I would feel stronger toward a conference that has more teams brought into the tournament and also with a conference whose teams went deep into the tournament. I do like that being the conference champion during the regular season has meaning by giving you home playoff games.

when was the last time the Big Sky had two bids?

  3. Hansel, I don't know about "two of the worst" team joinging the BSC, remember that UND already has a win against Sac State. Also, having post-season tournaments on campus of the regular season champion is better than playing in Sioux Falls in front of a three-quarters empty arena.

UND has a current RPI of 322 (out of 345 teams) and had a final RPI of 339 last year. Sac State is 1-8 (RPI 342), UND's other DI win was over E. Mich (0-8, RPI 340), while they may improve- It is safe to say that UND would be one of the worst teams in the league.

In 2009 Port St beat Mont St in front of 1500 fans in the Big Sky final when the host Weber lost in the semis. If the reg season champ does not make the final the conference tourney is a bust. If UND were to make the Conference tourney play in round as a 3-6 seed and win- how many fans would be able to make it to a conference tourney in Bozeman/Sacramento/Flagstaff/Ogden etc with only 3-5 days notice?

  4. In an ideal world, all four Dakota schools would be in the same conference. As you say, the BSC and MVFC are about even when it comes to football, and the BSC is a much stronger/better league that the current Summit for the other sports. Down the road, it would be nice to see all four Dakota schools in either an eastern division of the BSC, or in a revamped MVC that looks like the current football conference. For the moment, I'm delighted UND is in the Big Sky rather than the Summit, but honestly it would be nice to be with the other three Dakota schools too and build on those historic and geographic rivalries.

Currently the Summit is 24th in RPI, and the Big Sky is 26th, In Sagarin the Summit is 17th with the Big Sky 23rd.

The conferences have had pretty similar ratings over the last few years, however the Summit is ditching it worst two teams and adding USD, while the Big Sky is adding what will be two of its worst teams.

The "new Summit" (minus Cent, SUU, +USD) would currently be ranked 16th in RPI, the "new Big Sky" (+ SUU, UND) would currently be ranked 27th in RPI.

Playing the conference tourney in Sioux Falls every year is also nice.

  5. The other thing about those divergences of schools between conferences, almost every split has put the flagship school in the more respected conference than the land grant - for example Indiana/Indiana State, Florida/Florida State, Utah/Utah State.

Pretty sure Purdue is the Land Grant of Indiana, and U. Florida is the Land Grant of Florida.

Just because a school has "state" after its name doesn't mean it is the State's land grant university (ex FSU, Idaho State, Missouri St etc )

  6. This isn't necessarily groundbreaking by any means but a source at the university says Faison will be inking an FBS game with New Mexico State his previous employer in 2013. I'd expect it to be officially announced in the coming months.

    nmsuaggies_medium.jpg

Their mascot/logo has a sweet mustache

  7. If W. Illinois left the Summit/MVFC, I'm sure the Summit would love to replace them with UND. But I bet the MVFC would prefer to simply go back to 9 members and reinstitute a round-robin schedule.

WIU is a football school, why would they leave the MVFC for the OVC (which has not had a playoff win in a long time)

  8. WTF! I've been a supporter of Faison to this point but he needs to have his ass chewed over this. This is absolute garbage and has made us the laughing stock of the Dakota universities.

    USD's schedule might look similar.

With Fullerton grabbing every remaining schollie FCS school in the west for the Big Sky, it will be interesting to see what Big Sky teams do for non-conf schedules. If the Big Sky stays at 8 league games- it wouldn't be surprising to see BSC teams play each other as a non-conf game in years in which they are not scheduled to play.

  9. Now Hansel - you're not going to just come here and tell me I screwed up and leave are you??? :) Who are you picking for the weekend?

I'll take APP,SFA, Delaware, SeMO, Wofford, Bill and Mary and UNH.

I generally do not make predictions on NDSU games..... but since I live in Bozeman I do predict that I will be drinking on Saturday ;)

  10. Let's keep the smack out of this one please.

Here are the games on tap for this weekend.

Western Illinois @ (1) Appalachian State

    Villanova @ Stephen F Austin

SE Missouri @ (5) Eastern Washington

    NDSU @ (4) Montana State

    Lehigh @ (3) Delaware

    Bethune-Cookman @ New Hampshire

    Wofford @ Jacksonville State

    Georgia Southern @ (2) William & Mary

    My picks:

    Appy St

    SFA

    EWU

    Montana St

    Delaware

    UNH

    Wofford

    W&M

Guess I'm thinking the home teams will do alright. Should be some good games on the slate....

    Doesn't UNH play at BC?

  11. 11,742 in a non-conference sell-out for the Sioux vs. 12,200 for the first playoff game in the existence of F'dome.

Must be due to the weather in ND. Or Thanksgiving. Or the students weren't there. Wait a minute all of those pertain to UND and even still SELL OUT. ;):D

    FCS attendance yesterday

    UNI - 5990

    WIU - 4556

    Ga Southern - 10214

    NDSU - 12202

The first round playoff games are usually pretty poorly attended due to it falling on a holiday weekend. Here is a look at last years first round attendance compared to the average attendance in 2009 for the host schools (and percent of average).

    Montana #24,417 #19,197 79%

    Villanova #7,111 #4,319 61%

    Southern Illinois #8,882 #6,391 72%

    Richmond #9,413 #6,143 65%

    Appachalian St #24,004 #12,216 51%

    William & Mary #9,641 #6,497 67%

    McNeese State #12,948 #10,009 77%

    Stephen F Austin #11,111 #8,224 74%

  12. The way the point system worked for D II UND wouldn't have made the playoffs had they played NDSU those first years. We should have still played them in all other sports.

That is false- the point system was changed before NDSU's first season as a DI school

  13. With the move to the Big Sky Mr. Faison does not care anymore. UND no longer needs games.

Then I am sure he will drop the every year requirement with now that UND has 8 BSC games a year and it will be game on ;)

  14. UND won't agree to that, that is why Taylor is willing to offer it.

I don't care if they play every year, every other year, every 5 years, or never again.

As long as Gene Taylor is at NDSU, it ain't happening.

Faison is the one who wants the game bad, beggars can't be choosers ;)

  15. No criticism of NDSU, just the glowing media coverage it inevitably will garner. It's a shame the NCAA chooses to award an autobid to a conference that offers substantially less than the maximum number of scholarships while other worthy teams -- including Great West champ Southern Utah -- are left out in the cold.

    with the expansion to 20- no worthy teams were left out this year. Montana's best win was Sac St, SUU was 6-5 (4-3 against scholly FCS), Cal Poly only had 6 DI wins. None of the last teams had great years themselves (presumably Robert Morris, Coastal Car, NDSU, SC State) - that being said- I will take the playoff game ;

  16. Gene Taylor will never allow NDSU to play North Dakota in football as long as he is A.D.

It is a moot point barring a playoff pairing or legislative intervention :silly: ..................................

If UND would agree to an every other year deal- the game would happen in 2012.

  17. Someone said the Alumni Assoc. at NDSU bought up a bunch of tickets and they are giving them away to try get people to come to the playoff game. You wouldn't think they would need to do that when it is the first playoff game at NDSU in 20 years. You would everyone would be storming the ticket office to buy tickets.

500 tickets were bought to give away to NDSU students

  18. I agree in conference (Big Sky and MVFC) the Morningside games are gone.... but you still have PL and a large number of East Coast programs that are junk.

Up until this year Indiana State has been a doormat

and the Big Sky has Idaho State and Northern Colorado- who have both been bad for some time

  19. It is going to take a while for me to get used to the FCS playoff system:

    NDSU has a 7-4 record

    1) The best win is against the ISU Blue - NOTE: The trees 6-5 actually had a losing record agains Div 1 teams (4 - 5) - they played two NAIA teams.

    2) 1 FBS win against Kanas - new coach, new system, 3 - 8 overall record.

    Poly has a 7-4 record

    1) 3 wins against teams with winning record including Montana at home, McNeese St on road and Old Dominion on the road.

Its not like the MVFC was lights out in non conference play this year - and they got three teams in the playoffs..

    MVFC FCS OoC - record

    Wins - UND (trans) (61), E. Illinois (84), 2 x USD (trans) (53) , Central Conn (52), Sam Houston St (33), Morgan St (106), Bulter (108)

Loses - Murray St, (42) SF Austin (5), SE Missouri St. (17), Delaware (1)

So, the OoC highlights - Kansas (109 in Div 1 - NOTE: Minnesota was ranked 110) and Sam Houston St.

One of Poly's win was a 6 pt W over DII Humboldt State, so they only have 6 DI wins. 6DI wins = no playoffs

also while ODU is 8-3 this is only their second year of football, so their schedule was a mixed bag.

  20. Announcers seemed to think the Grizzlies were going to get in win or lose today, probably with some reputation votes, but after losing today even if they do slide in they are going to have to play a killer in the first round and will probably get spanked.

Did I see right that NDSU got beat 3-0 or was that not an updated score? Didn't that team they were playing give up like 400 points this year?

I see the Sioux mailed one in as well, I actually had a little hope after they showed some heart here against the Griz, but alas...

The Montana announcers are homers (I heard them too), I just don't think they can fathom that the griz could actually miss the playoffs

NDSU screwed the pooch today but may squeek in

  21. I would like to be a fly on the wall in the selection committee meeting room (or a hacker on the WebX in todays technology) and hear any arguments for/against NDSU/Montana. Montana has a long p(l)ayoff tradition the NC$$ may not want to turn their backs on. I suppose they could take the $$ for both teams and someone else is out.

Montana is 7-4 with a DII win and did not play an FBS. Their best win was at home against Sac St... if they get in it is all about the money as a 6-4 record against FCS competition isn't that great. This year is proof that the expansion to 20 teams was a bad idea as the committee will be scraping the barrel for the last couple of teams.
