  1. UND has arrived in the FCS world

It would take a win over an FBS or an FCS playoff team before I would consider UND to have arrived. Over its last 11 games, UND has 1 win over a DI school that offers athletic aid, and that school was playing its first year of football in 20 years. When UND starts consistently winning big games, then Bohl would have reason to be concerned.

  2. If you're talking about two comparable teams, yes. But we're talking about Pat Hill vs. Tim Brewster. Big difference there too, don't you think?

I would take a win over 3-9 Minnesota rather than a close loss to what will probably by ~8-6 type Fresno team. But then, I am not into moral victories ;)

  3. So I'm assuming then that if it's "hilarious" that UND entered the poll after taking a pretty decent Fresno State team to the wire, then it must have been even more "hilarious" when USD entered the poll last year after edging the hapless Gophers, right? Or were voters thinking they were voting for SDSU? Hmmmm...

There is a big difference between a close win and a close loss.

  4. South Dakota is starting to make a name for themselves with wins over Minnesota and Eastern Washington. UND needs to play big name FCS teams and WIN!!! UND's last big win 2009 vs #16 Cal Poly.

Cal Poly finished that season 4-7. UND's last big win was when they were DII

  5. I think Gene Taylor will stay away from the tough OOC teams and stick to the cupcakes.

Georgia Southern was booked this year but backed out, and Montana and Montana State are coming to the dome soon. Taylor was thinking about scheduling an NAIA school, but Faison has been snatching up all the local NAIA teams with mutliple year deals ;)

  6. I seriously doubt this administration is going to pick an nationality/ethnicity as a logo and nickname. Plus, for those of us who are not of nordic decent will not cling to it. More than likely they pick a lame animal that a bunch of other institutions use and everybody hates it.

Just like the non-natives did not cling to the Sioux nickname?

  7. Is it the NCAA who requested a rep from REA there, or is it the ND delegation? I should think any ND delegation that wants to try to save the nickname and expose the NCAA for their hypocrisy would request the meetings be "open." Inviting a private entity into the discussion would close that opportunity. Maybe the open meeting laws don't apply anyway since it's outside of ND and the point it moot...not sure.

If the meetings were "open", the NCAA would probably not participate.

  8. 12 teams for football (two 6 team divisions, 8 game conference schedule) and 10 teams for other sports (round robin/double round robin schedules) is a much easier scheduling model for the Big Sky than 13/11 with one team in Grand Forks, I wouldn't want to give the Big Sky an excuse to make their life easier. Hopefully the idiots who got UND into this mess (Carlson et al) had a contingency plan in case it blew up in their face (like what is happening now), but I am guessing they didn't.

  9. Not getting into the pissing match or downplaying how well NDSU has done...

UND would have started their exploratory year in July of 2007. At that time NDSU football was still in the GWFC and the only signature win on your list that had happened was Ball State.

The MBB wins over Wisconsin and Marquette, and the WBB win over Minnesota were all in 06.

  10. Is it any less a perceived pariah to play SD School of Mines and Technology than it would be to play Minot State University? If it's about money, then save the extra costs of paying to bus a team from Rapid City to GF and just keep it in-state and bring in the transitioning school 150 miles down US 2. Or schedule MSU-Moorhead, where the opponent won't even have to be put up in a hotel. Ah, what the hell, schedule UM-Crookston. They are close enough where UND might not even have to provide a post-game meal.

The same 4500 to 6000 (generous? perhaps) fans are going to go to ANY of those games no matter what. It's the fans from 6000 to capacity that you have to pique the interest of. Does scheduling a NAIA to NCAA DII transitioning school from Rapid City that a majority of people didn't even know had a sports program, let alone football program, do that?

    Go Sioux!

They are probably hoping (some) fans don't know SDSM&T is NAIA transitioning to DII. Playing SDSM&T (or Montana Tech by NDSU recently) sounds a lot better to the average (non-message board) fan than playing Mayville or VCSU.

  11. 2010 in the MVFC:

    Southern Illinois played Quincy (NAIA)

Illinois State played Central Missouri (D2)

Indiana State played St Josephs (D2)

That may change this year but it shows they do it too.

They do it is as well, but not to the same extent as the Big Sky, (and won't play any sub DI in 2011). Also, the 9 current BSC teams have played 49 games against scholly FCS teams over the last 5 years. 44 of those games have been against current GWFC teams (4 of which the BSC is absorbing, and USD who will have many fewer OOC oppurtunities as a MVFC member). Unless BSC teams start playing each other as non-conf games, BSC non-conf schedules will be mostly FBS and sub-DI.

  12. An FCS program with no DII or NAIA opponents on the schedule seems to be the exception rather than the norm..........

most Big Sky Schools play up or down in OOC due to the lack of regional FCS schools. All BSC teams other than Portland State and Weber played "down" last year, however those two schools played two FBS games. With the BSC gobbling up all the potential FCS OOC opponents in its region, I would expect to that trend continue. CAA and SoCon schools often play all DI schedules, because they are surrounded by DI teams. In addition, no MVFC team is scheduled to play "down" next year.

  13. I will say that it appears to me that a neutral site for the BigSky tourney is not a viable option. The geography is just too big.

SLC would be the best option, probably within 500 miles of most Big Sky teams, a direct flight for the rest (except UND - who could fly through Fargo).

  14. It's certainly not a great win, but any road win is something of an accomplishment for this program considering how few such wins there have been in recent years.

HBU does have the worst RPI in the country right now, although they did recently beat Middle Tennessee St. from the Sun Belt, which has an RPI of 213.

I'm still not sure how Centenary, with only one dI win (not to mention just three scholarship players), isn't the lowest-ranked team right now.

SOS, if you look at the teams with 300+ RPI there are a lot of Great West, SWAC, and MEAC schools. Those conferences have by far the worst RPIs, so even if you are winning games in those leagues, you are not going to help yourself out much.

  15. If I understand it correctly, it would also apply to tailgating lots. I can't imagine the Alerus would be too excited about what this could do to the tailgating scene...

Weird they are going after "nonpublic" insitutions as well- that will never fly.

I just skimmed it but it looks like booze might be ok in areas not accessible to minors (ex 21+ tailgating lots, sectioned off bars etc?)

  16. My mistake that was before my time at UND where i only really followed the hockey team. I should not have made that assumption. I believe he does receive some money now but thank you for the clarification. Also, I asked assistant coach Phillipe if the sioux were still looking for one more recruit this season via twitter. He responded today saying:

"Yeah we are. I'm actually recruiting in Minneapolis right now for the T-Wolves Shootout at Target Center..."

In DI basketball whenever someone is giving any scholarship money it counts as a full scholarship against the team. So unless UND is being cheap, he is probably getting all or nothing.

  17. however if we lose the d2 game hurts us immensley and we would be 7-4 if we won 7 fcs games we would be out of the playoffs cuz of the loss to the d2 team

and they way mussman has his teams playing, i dont even know why im talking playoffs lol but just to put it in perspective.

I beleive Montana State made it as an at-large with a 7-4 record a few years back with a DII loss. They did beat Colorado that year though.

  18. Softball and baseball are just not ever going to be viable sports at the DI level in this region.

NDSU won their NCAA regional in 2009 and finished in the final top 25 and also made the NCAA tourney last year. NDSU does play softball games in the FargoDome- so they could probably do it at the Alerus unless the roof is too low.

  19. Not sure if this is the right topic category (might better belong in "Community") but is there a list somewhere that shows distribution of UND and NDSU alums, by county, in North Dakota, and perhaps how UND alums are based out of state? It would be nice to know how we stack up on the west side of the state compared to NDSU, and how we are grouped in future BSC locales. Also, it might lay to rest the "Fargo is mostly a NDSU town" cry some like to make.

here is a pretty nice one for NDSU

  20. Can we just agree that most NDSU fans prefer the Summit/MVFC and most North Dakota fans prefer the Big Sky and leave it at that?

Arguing over which league is better because it is two spots higher in the bottom 1/3 of the RPI or arguing over which league is better because its basketball games draw 200 more people than the other seems relatively pointless.

North Dakota is delighted to be a member of one of the top 3 FCS conferences in the nation that has quality rivals in a bordering state. NDSU is delighted to be a member of one of the top 3 FCS conferences in the nation that has quality rivals in a bordering state.

Personally, I think that the Big Sky is a much better league overall and fits UND and its mission better than the Summit would have. I can't prove it, it is just my opinion. I'm sure that Hansel, Fargobison, and ndsubison1 feel the same way about NDSU and the Summit and MVFC, and I can't prove that they are wrong either.

I also am of the opinion that if the Big Sky would have invited NDSU back in 2004 that most NDSU fans would feel that the Big Sky was the premier league in FCS and would be touting it as the best possible fit for them. Same goes for UND..............if we would have been invited to the Summit a year and a half ago when USD was, followed by an invite to the MVFC, most of us would pounding our chest about how great the Summit/MVFC is and start referring to the Big Sky as the Big Fluffy like MVFC and CAA fans do.................

Funny how stuff works out.......................and I'm pretty happy with the way it all did.

IN MY OPINION, the following are the reasons that I PERSONALLY THINK that the Big Sky is better for UND than the Summit:

    1) Opponent Continuity---I feel it is easier to build rivalries when you have the same opponents for all sports

    2) Alumni base--Other than the Twin Cities, most alumni of UND head west, often near Big Sky locales

    3) Notoriety & Academics--Big Sky has larger recognizable schools often named for their state or large metro city. Distinguished research schools at UM, MSU, Davis, & Poly

    4) Most desirable possible schedules---NDSU, USD, SDSU, UNI are just a short bus-ride ride away, to go along with guaranteed games against UM, MSU, Weber, UNC, ISU, Poly, & Davis

    5) Stability---Big Sky still has 4 charter members going back to nearly 50 years ago. Virtually every Summit member wants to be in either the MVC or Horizon league

    6) Women's sports---WBB is a very important sport at UND. Big Sky is a much better WBB conference. Volleyball is emerging at UND and alot of talent in the region........BSC is a better Volleyball conference. Softball struggles at UND, but there is much more talent to recruit in the west than in the midwest.

One could make a case for the either MVFC/Summit or Big Sky being a better option (and with Faison's scheduling prowess- being a FB independent was not an option). However some fans seem to think that the Big Sky is a multiple bid league in all sports with sold out arenas- which is is simply not the case.

Big Sky is much better WBB conference

The "New Summit" has would be the 19th rated conference.... with the "new Big Sky" being ranked 20th.

I couldn't find the actual RPI values posted for VB but the individual rankings for the schools are as follows- you might be able to give a slight edge to the Big Sky... but not by much.
