It's mask theater. It's time to drop the face masks. The only masks that work against Omicron is the N95.

I don't see Omaha beating DU two games in a row.

I don’t either, just wondering if that was the only clinching scenario

  2. So we can clinch the Penrose this weekend right? But would need to sweep Western and see Denver get swept? Or is there a different combo of W/L/T that would do it?

A tall order, but would be great to see. Regardless of clinching, a sweep of Western would be huge!

Glad to see the boys playing with more consistency! This has looked like an actual team lately, whereas earlier in the season there just didn't seem to be much chemistry.

Could be a fun stretch to end the season!

I would have to believe he is done here. Doesnt it feel like he would need to go D2 or down a level?  Not sure but its too bad.  Would like to see him get a shot playing again, somewhere to close it out.

I would also think he is done here. Just too bad for a kid to let all that potential play out this way.

  4. Anyone hear anything on Otis? Obviously hasn’t landed anywhere to the caliber he wanted. What are his options at this point? Drop down to D2? Walk on at a low end FBS and pay his own way? Would UND ever welcome him back (I’d think he burned to many bridges)?

  5. Wish I could watch tomorrow, but I'll be enjoying my evening with two young ladies at the local father daughter dance.

Have fun watching and Go Sioux! Hoping for a win and set up nicely for next weekend when I can hopefully watch again amidst a Mite tourney!

  6. Does anyone foresee Colten St. Clair eventually coaching in this program?

I would have to think if Berry were to leave at any given point, Dane Jackson would get his shot as head coach, but that could open the door for St. Clair as an assistant. Or maybe St. Clair gets his experience through working his way up into some sort of NHL capacity first.

He seems to be the UND guy making the most of a coaching career as of recent. Thoughts on St. Clair or any other potential future candidates?

Thanks for that wonderful story. Glad 29K/year treated you so well.

But … you missed the point completely. Like way over your head. It’s about competitive values here. Any high caliber DI position coach is worth a hell of a lot more than 50K in a season, particularly compared to top FCS schools,  and especially all FBS school.

If you were offered the same job in Fargo at a different company/location for 50K as opposed to 29K, which would you take? C’mon man ….

Wow, thanks for your rude and condescending post. I'm not missing the point at all. I completely acknowledged that to be competitive we need a higher salary. I was in no way insinuating that a program should be paying their players poor wages.

My post was in response to someone asking what the poverty level was in Grand Forks and stating that the starting wage at McDonalds in Williston is $36k. My only point was that there is often a tendency to assume that a modest wage can't support a decent living. It can, if people are smart.

Obviously if you want to compete as a football program, we need to pay our coaches more than we are. That has been well documented here; but again, that isn't specifically what I was referring to.

So once again, thanks for jumping in to be a jerk and completely take my post out of context.

From my expereices, the FB showing up and being active in the student section for basketball was a lot more under Bubba when it was under Muss.  Not saying they didn't show up to games, but not to this level of organization or energy they bring.

Without them, it would be pretty quiet (and that is a whole other issue I could spend posts and posts about when it comes to student sections at UND... even hockey is not immune to this issue)

Baseball probably would have won 3 or 4 College World Series Championships by now too.

Problem out west is rent is 2 to $3,000 a month, it has come down a little.

that takes half your wage, taxes take another 25% so it doesn’t leave much

Right, I was referring more to $50k for a coaching job in Grand Forks as very livable.

What is the poverty level for a family of 3 in Grand Forks ?

even a single person in GF would be hard to make a living at that salary

starting wage at McDonalds in Williston is probably $36,000

12 years ago I took my first corporate job at the exciting salary of $29k in Fargo. Married, with no kids at the time, we were able to live comfortable and start saving for our future house and family. To be competitive, we should be able to offer a higher salary, but as to whether or not a $50k salary is enough to live on, it absolutely is if you are smart with it.

If you're single and can't live on $50k, you need to reevaluate your expenses.

If you're married, then you likely have a second income to factor in.

Maybe the fans are bipolar because the play on the ice seems to be inconsistent, but I think as a fanbase we need to be thankful for where we are right now, and hope they can gain a level of consistency in the second half.   You can say that we lost more than any other team in the country after last year, but we are still fighting it out for a possible league championship and NCAA tourney appearance.  Funny how all of the people that were down on Hakstol and kept saying why can't we be more like Boston College are now using other measuring sticks.  Yes, that is what great programs do, but I think we need to be a bit more realistic after losing such a dynamic group -- after all we could be like Boston College!

That's what I was saying. The play has been bi-polar, not the fans.

I'm not down on Berry necessarily, but I always like Hak. He just seemed to get more out of his players. Its hard to compare because for me it is more about the intangibles, the things that don't show up on a stat sheet.

Been a bit quiet around here with how important this weekend is.

Western is really frickin' good and after the mess that was Cornell followed by the COVID nonsense, this is a really important weekend up in Kalamazoo.

    What team shows up?

This is the key isn't it. This is one of the most bi-polar teams I've seen. The talent is there, the chemistry is not. Not all that surprising given all the new players this season.

I know there is some lack of excitement for me compared to other years based on the play. Win or lose, the games just have not seems great. You never really leave a win feeling like we dominated, and after a loss I don't often feel like we ever had a chance or were competitive. That play itself reminds me of back in 2017/2018 time frame when we seemed to lack energy, creativity and excitement.

Of course then we were relying on guys like Hoff for goals and the talent seemed down. At least we have guys like Gaber, Sanderson, etc. which helps our cause now, but this team still seems to be lacking something.

Hope they can figure it out and make a run, but they better figure it out fast. Between the Penn State debacle, Friday night losses, the blowout by SCSU, and getting swept at home by Cornell, we are lucky to be ranked where we are right now. Here is to a Hakstol type run to finish the season!

Hard pass. I’d prefer a guy to not get his first coaching job at UND. Don’t care if he was really good. Certainly couldn’t coach ball security.

Agreed. I hate the notion that a guy should automatically be looked at as a coach because he was a good player, or a fan favorite. Good students don't necessarily make good teachers.

Nobody will ever repeat the NDSU run the last 11 years or whatever it is.  There is no reason whatsoever we can't compete with NDSU year in and year out and win multiple MVFC championships, be seeded in the playoffs every year and always make the quarterfinals, usually make the semi-finals and often make the final.  If that is not our aim(especially as the FCS is watered down with FBS defections) the University should state that and we should return do D2 and drop all the "flagship U" talk.

IMO if Bubba was the coach we need to get to the next level he would either be paid like that or he would have moved on to a better job.  Why on earth do you think Schmidt didn't decide he wanted to attach himself to a coach that was going to win big and move up the coaching ranks fast?  Now he has far more $ and he is moving up fast.

If being a really good man, loving the state of North Dakota and the University of North Dakota were the only ingredients it takes to win a National Championship, Bubba would be playing in a couple weeks for his 8th.

Not that I would ever cheer for NDSU, but their success really wouldn't bother me as much if their fans weren't so obnoxious. No so much from a rivalry standpoint, but just an in general obnoxious level. They're not all bad, but there is definitely more bad fans following that program than anywhere else. I suppose with that level of success comes a certain level of fair-weather bandwagon fans that no nothing about the sport, but enjoy the glory. The way so many of them talk, you would think it is them out their playing.

You are overlooking a key point. In this hypothetical recruiting situation, NDSU would no longer be FCS, they’d be G5 FBS. G5 teams win recruiting battles against P5 teams hundreds of times a year. Playing time, culture, connection with the coaching staff…etc.

    For arguments sake ....

I remember a pretty good D2 UND team moving up to D1 (far later than they should have). At that point they had a pretty good name at the D2 level, and they moved up to FCS, so with your logic we should have had no issues recruiting against the NDSU, SDSU, UNI, Montana type schools .... right? Simply being an FCS team should be enough to win FCS recruits, just as simple being FBS should be enough to win FBS recruits.

Now obviously there is some satire and extremism in my response, but I think you get my point. I'm not going to say NDSU couldn't find some success at the FBS level, because honestly, who the hell know. They could jump up and surprise some people and give themselves something to build on, or they could struggle for a few years and really just bury themselves into an FBS hole, which would leave their FCS success as nothing more than a memory of what was (still a pretty great memory).

Now this isn't directed at you, but there are so many uneducated and dumb Bison fans (just as UND has a ton of uneducated and dumb hockey fans), who believe the team, program and success comes from the name. We're Bison football so we are untouchable, just as many UND fans think UND hockey should be untouchable even though there are a ton of other factors that go into maintaining success; there are only more of those factors as you move up.

This could not have been more well represented than by Izzo's comments in the last week. To essential say, NDSU can play for FCS Championships, or FBS Championships is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. NDSU is good and we all know it, but they are a far cry from a dominant Power 5 team that will win week in and week out against that caliber of talent. Now, I don't blame Izzo. He is doing his job and adding fuel to the fire where, as I mentioned, there is already a large subset of very delusional fans. Most aren't that delusional, but we all know there are truly those people who believe NDSU would be Alabama. C'mon Man!

  16. 2 hours ago, Hawkster said:

Do you really want a team full of NDSU washouts?   We need players that are better than ndsu.

You do realize how ridiculous this sounds from a team that just missed the playoffs, talking about a team that just won yet another championship?

We take players from other teams, and that's ok? There are a few ways to look at this .... does this kid have talent and he is just buried under some better players? possible. Does he have talent, but just doesn't care for NDSU (school, campus, coaches, city, etc.)? Maybe. Do you take a kid, purely because he was at NDSU? Of course not.

Ultimately, does he have talent? Can he contribute? Is he a good kid? I don't care where a kid is transferring from NDSU, UofM, Alabama .... he needs to be evaluated to see if it makes sense. We have seen D2 talent step up at UND and dominate (Krzanowski, Coe) and we have seen FBS dropdowns come in and do nothing. Every kid is their own player and can have their own contribution. If the coaches think Seth Anderson can step in and help by starting or being a depth guy, I'm for it.

And as much as I can't stand NDSU, and am sick of hearing about their football team, they obviously keep getting something right. (Entz still sucks)

I'm no compliance official (or his probations officer) but it seems like a longshot.

Just imagine the Elijah having a conversation with Otis to convince him to come back. The Grady Train blocking the way for Weah all season! We can be known as like 8th Chance U! I can see the Disney posters now! While we are at it, maybe Keelan Poole wants to come back and play a bit.

This is no disrespect to their skill positions, but most of NDSU's banners are because they had the best OL in the competition.

There are definitely a lot of games (most), where you just wonder how their RBs seem to go untouched for 10-15 yards so frequently.

Man, this fanbase can feel so d@mn entitled. This kid owes us nothing, I'm sorry.

If Sandy goes to the Olympics, he is doing so under the UND flag. Add another Olympian to our record books and to our marketing

Do I like that we'll very likely lose our best player for a massive chunk of a really important stretch of the season? Absolutely not.

But, it's a little annoying with our fanbase's inability to see past the moment. To be an Olympian is an incredible honor and we should celebrate it.

As per usual, you nailed it.
