Brought in a couple of big bodies on the OL who have game experience. Plus other returners have game experience.

Smith looked really good in his touches last year, Mitchell is back and I'm blanking on the other OB who had a 100 yard game.

Maag will prove he's a draft worthy this year.

I really hope so, but I will believe it when I see it. Maag has been a solid receiver for UND, but he has not been the standout I was expecting. Guy needs to play to his size and hold onto the ball in the redzone.

Tons of potential, and I know he was battling an injury last year, but really hoping you're right here.

  2. It is what it is. This shows the level of commitment UND has to mediocrity. I'm not saying Bubba can't surprise us, and take us to the next level, but I haven't see anything to convince me this will happen.

I suppose the same argument can be made as was with Women's hockey, you have to work with the money you have. I don't know; easy to criticize without having a better solution I guess.

Motzko was there and I'm sure he noticed Bump but he has singed his NLI. Motzko was there to watch Gopher commit Sam Rinzel as well as some other guys like Chaska Sophomores Sam Scheetz and Tanner Bruender among others.

Didn't know he had already signed his NLI. I clearly don't look close enough at that stuff.

Can't believe it's the playoffs. What a ride we've taken this year, eh?

Feeling confident we have everyone back next on Friday. Maybe not Sandy, but we could. Gaber and Frisch shouldn't have too much rust, and everything I've heard about Sandy in practice is that he's not missed a beat and actually looks better and more confident than he did before Bejing.

Take it in two and see ya at the X. Get it done.

    Any chance Hain plays again?

Wonder if Bubs could flip Alex Bump out of PL? No way he ends up at Vermont

I was talkin to a guy on my hockey team who mentioned that Motzko was at the PL/Chaska game last week to watch Bump, as well as some NHL scouts. No way he ends up at Vermont, it would be am absolute steal.

He will absolutely get more offers, I just hope Bubs is take a close look.

Omaha is better without Abate in the lineup.  Completely Gabinet's fault for telling the kid to cross the line etc., but going forward its amazing what not stirring up your opponent and not having to kill dumb penalties does for a team.

Oh you mean the guy who joked about him and Berry needing to talk to the league about not always playing each other the last week of the season because it always seemed to get pretty physical. Funny how that happens when you try to goon it up.

  7. This seems like the least I have ever heard about Spring football. Isn't there usually some sort of update or write up? Anyone been to a practice? Anything from Miller or the 360 guys?

I know our own athletic department is lacking, but kudos to the AD's contract extension.  Just looking for anything here on players, injuries, practice updates. It kind of makes you miss the Spring season a bit.

Totally get it.  I'm just a little more empathetic than the next. So I am terrible on message boards. Same reason I can be both a great boss and a horrible boss to my employees, at the same time.

Posters that try to come across all hard and uncompromising all the time (not you) always seem fake to me. Like they would wilt like a daisy in real life if they ever had to make decisions in the public eye.

You're a gentleman and a scholar Teeder. Empathy is a great trait, and sometimes its too easy to criticize a coach and their status, forgetting that you're also talking about someone's livelihood.

Ultimately, we all want the same thing, and that is UND to be a competitive team year in and year out. Hopefully this year bring some success. For the record, I don't think you can find a nicer person as a coach than Bubba based on what I have seen and hear from people close to the program. Would love to see him get UND to that next level, and if not, I hope there can be a seamless transition to whomever comes in. I want UND to take a step forward, but certainly hope we don't have to take a major step back.

There's a great saying about hindsight... it just escapes me right now.  Something about how it makes us all arm chair geniuses.  It's fun tho. ( :

Oh absolutely! Can't pretend that I personally could do a better job as a whole, but a few of those calls were headscratchers for almost anyone. Even the Bison fans couldn't believe that 4th down call.

All that being said, I expect a little more out of a guy that coaches football for a living and has done so for a long time.

Pretty sure that's a rhetorical statement, but with Bubbas track record and with his contract expiring in two years, I think it would make the most sense to see how next season plays out.  My prediction is they move on if he doesn't win a playoff game.

Bubba has absolutely not earned an extension at this point in time. What he did last spring was awesome! Winning and beating some really solid teams in a very unorthodox season. Had he carried that momentum and top 5/10 ranking into the fall season I would have a different opinion. But the most consistent thing about Bubba's tenure at UND has been inconsistency.

It has been well documented on this message board, but if you look at how close UND was to winning almost all of their games this year its ridiculous. The opportunity was right there for them to springboard off of last years performance. Now some of those mistakes are on players, but there were plenty on the coaches.

I'm not sure where to put the blame on the redzone turnovers. Initially, that has to be on the players, right? But after seeing so many of them, and that problem continue throughout the season, what is the coaching staff doing to adjust? Whether it is the playcalling, the specific players, or the mentality. Same with some of those end of game fumbles with Otis. Though, I believe we called a direct snap on one, which we had never called before. That's not an excuse for fumbling, but if you really trust you back (which they did all game), why try to trick someone for a yard or two? If you don't get it, just punt and play some D. Then there is the NDSU game, which I will not get over until we finally beat them UND (defense specifically) played their a$$es off, and Bubba blows it with one of the dumbest calls I've ever seen, and literally hands them 3 critical points.

Is everything Bubba's fault? Of course not. Does he deserve a contract extension based on his performance? Absolutely not. Lets see how this coming season plays out, but without a decent playoff run, it has to be time to move on to someone who can take the next step.

Man, I'm ready for some more football chatter.

That was Kennedy. Chaves has a solid relationship with them from everything I've seen.
So your comment referred to just one donor and it wasn't even Chaves?

My mistake, I was mixing up the two. Any by donors, yes I meant the family. There are multiple people there. But yes, my mistake, I'll remove that.

Still not impressed with the guy though.

  12. Disappointing. It seems like this is a position that has been criticized for quite a while at UND.

Now I'm glad that we maintain our success as a hockey powerhouse. I love hockey, and I'm a big time fan! I wouldn't want to see us take a step back there.

But this school needs to put some more emphasis on football, and basketball too. I get that money makes a huge difference here, and not just who the AD, but there is definitely a correlation here.

    I just haven't been impressed.

Wanna know the real issue? The athletic department doesn’t have any video staff. None. That’s not Ton Millers fault but I think it’s worth some emails to the AD to get his !@#$ together and start operating like it’s the 21st century and not 1950.

Yeah, didn't mean to blame Miller. I saw him say yesterday that he was working on it. Just surprise it was out there yet. And yeah, AD has been nothing but a disappointment. How is this the same guy that worked with Eastern Washington? Safe to assume he walked into a well oiled machine and let it run.

Can't wait for a Spring roster.

Seems ridiculous that this isn't out there yet. Would really like to see what some of these guy's weights are at. I would have thought Miller would have been asking about this leading up to camp, but I guess not.

Anyone have any information on practice yesterday? I'd assume it was an open practice. Probably pretty quiet for a first day, but it would be nice to see something on it. Obviously a Spring season was never going to be the normal thing, and football belongs in the fall, but I'll admit, it would be pretty fun to be watching some football right about now. :)

A few wishes for this year:

-Consistent QB Play: Not just completion percentage, but actually throwing the ball more than 5 yards and occasionally stretching the field. This is still Tommy's team, though I really liked the QV wrinkle when it was executed will (MO. St) BUT I'm very intrigued to see if Feeney can push for playing time. Hoping the coaches consider this to be a wide open competition and go with whoever proves themselves.

-Consistent and Competent Play calling: Don't need to elaborate on this too much. Coaches made some really boneheaded calls last year that cost us a win over NDSU, a few other wins, and ultimately the playoffs. Bubba and Danny absolutely need to figure this stuff out heading into the season.

-Redzone: The redzone turnovers just can't happen this year, certainly not to the extent they happened in the Fall.

-Kicking: Have to be more reliable with field goals. Such a bummer that young kicker decommitted to go to K State. That could have been huge for us.

Those are the big ones for me, as they directly contributed to missed scoring and losing us close games. Though there are always other areas:

-Defense: Great at making adjustments, but needs to be able to make a stop on the first drive of the game.

-RB: Not so much an area of improvement, just excited to see how we backfill Otis. Smith certainly showed what he can do, Ziebarth showed some flashes, and I'm really hoping Mitchell can make a big impact after having such bad luck with the injury last year.

    -TE: USE THEM!
