I was wondering if it wasn't the Crookston FBO's 172 they rent out. I know that a lot of aviation students did what these two did to gain more hours because it is cheap (Grand Forks FBO's airplanes aren't as cheap as the Crookston's 172) because I benefitted from it. The one thing that bugs me is that both were freshmen and one didn't even have his pilot's license yet. I don't know if this has anything to do with why they crashed (more than likely not), but the only reason why I got to go get some hours at Crookston was because I had (still have) a friend who was a flight instructor and he agreed to come along.

I also would like to see what Novotny can do. He seems like he has good size.

I guess I don't understand how the actions of an individual can be tied into something else that is separate and is only similar in name only? UND says every game, every venue, up and down, left and right that they chose the name "Fighting Sioux" out of a sign of respect towards the tenacity and fierceness displayed by the Sioux warriors of times past. Now, you can agree or disagree with that all you want, but that's not the issue with the lawsuit nor is it the issue here. What IS the issue is that the actions of idiots, UND students, GF residents, or whatever, are being misconstrued as being associated with UND's nickname when they commit stupid and often criminal acts against people of Native American descent. They are entirely seperate! Again, how is it right if I beat up Hans Krantz, a 6'1" tall blone haired, blue eyed person of German descent being that I am Jewish? Because Germans killed off 6 million of "my people" including members of my grandparents family makes it ok? Some call that a hate crime. Alright, if you can prove that the only reason why I attacked him was because he was blonde haired and blue eyed (aka Aryan). I don't see these acts of racism as having anything to do with the nickname. And, as Dartmouth has shown, the nickname's removal won't stop these things from happening. What HAS to be accepted out of all of this is that some people are idiots and racists. These people deserve censure, marginalization, and, if warranted, criminal proceedings brought against them. Explaining how they became what they became is nothing more than window dressing and statistical factoids useful to those who spend their lives in research or those who wish to indulge themselves in activist endeavours because 99% of the time they took individualized paths towards becoming who they are. There is no secret society that fosters attempts to bring more racists in the world. There is only organizations that tends to seek out and entice pre-existing racists to group together and cause dissent, such as the Neo-Nazis and the KKK. Why focus our attention on UND when we could be trying to focus our attention trying to bring about tolerance and ending the KKK and Neo-Nazis (as examples) ability to recruit? Ending the nickname isn't going to do anything for the Native Americans. It's only going to make them feel like they took on "the man" and won. After that, they'll feel dissatisfied with the result and want more. I'm not going to sit here and tell undsportsfan or anyone that Native Americans have it good, even those at UND. Their lives are difficult even with the 30 or so programs designed to help them out. However, focusing on improving the programs and those UND students going back to the reservation and promoting education to raise the graduation rate above the levels it is now (54% in 2001 in ND alone, worse in other states, IIRC) and raising the education of the Native Americans will do more for the Native Americans in terms of eliminating racism and hardship than the removal of the nickname ever will.

Hmmm I can see where you interpretted my post to mean that, but that's not what I meant. If I could edit that post I would to reflect it. I'm saying, and now Chris has pointed out that I was wrong about, that it may have been avoided had he had his stick there. Chris knows more about this type of thing than I so I'll just admit I was wrong and go on my way. Any way you put it, really, this could be basically the end of the Mavs as even a spoiler. I really do think that what emotion was shown this past weekend will eventually fade and the Mavs could find themselves in last place at the end of the season. A tough way to fade. Yeah, they may already be in last place, but positions change down the stretch. Like if anyone here thinks UW is going to continue to lose games or MTU continue to win them (sorry MeanEGirl).

I was at that game too! I'm VERY happy for the Blackhawks compliments on Porter. 9th round picks are always long shots for a contract and the better Porter does, the better chance he has of getting a contract. I don't know if he'll ever play in the NHL, but I think he'd make a decent AHL player at least.

I'm surprised this is all you responded to in his post being that he has attacked posters here repeatedly and then cries foul when people don't respect his opinion. And I was wondering when I elected dumbpeoplesuk to represent the world's opinion?
-
I thought no one was going to respond because of all the poster attacking he's been doing.

Oh hush! I knew there was a real reason for us conspiracy theorists to sink our teeth into as to why the Sioux lost!

Heh, I'm a BIG detractor of Wheeler as any, but I agree. I don't like the Gophers much nor do I care much for their penchant to run opposing goaltenders as much as they do and have done in the past. However, there is NO WAY Wheeler did this intentionally. NO WAY. In fact, I think Woog was right. Tormey should have had his stick in front of the glove. I don't think he'd have gotten injured if he had... or maybe he'd've gotten the skate to the mask. I don't know. But it is truly the biggest tragedy of this hockey season thus far (and hopefully it is the only tragedy this year). And yeah, I know it was bad for DU's Captain, but I think this has far more serious implications. HOw much mobility of that wrist will Tormey lose?

Are you implying that Diggler likes to sneak into girls' rooms and steal their Barbies?

And I'll point out that that UND professor was a mockery to the field of academia. His personal agenda interfered with his professional duties. If a professor takes on a personal agenda (like corruption) on a topic that is attached to a public institution and uses it against said institution or for it (like your alleged fair treatment only when you said you were for the nickname), this obviously was caused by the institution. The nickname causes the corruption, people of UND! NOT unethical people! When an issue causes people to start losing focus on the fact that there are individuals on this planet who are not very good people, then those people making said accusations really need to take a step back and realize that, perhaps, they need to look into a concept granted to us by God known as "free will." If someone robs a convenience store, it doesn't tell me anything about the name of the convenience store or the ethnicity of the people owning or operating it. It tells me that the person robbing it is a crook! Using undsportsfan's perspective I'd have to look at the race of the people involved. Then ludicrous things such as "the owner and operators of the store were white and the robber was black. Therefore obviously the reason why he robbed the store was because the poor black man couldn't find honest work thanks to the racism of the white man so he must be forgiven because he was simply desperate to get what the white man takes for granted." THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN THE CURRENT NICKNAME DEBATE. Racism is charged by the pro name change crowd because they are unable to attribute free will to bad people. Get a clue people. Racism is caused by people who are just plain bad people. Not some logo or name or whatever. If it isn't, then where is the line drawn? If some guy is walking down the street wearing a "People, not logos" T-Shirt and kills someone wearing a Sioux T-shirt? I'm sure the hurt and the unfairness evoked by the nickname caused the murder right? Where's the line?
-
Cue the obligatory "I don't like what dubpeoplesuk said either but..." Remember, part of the Logo Change crowd's "fire" that they breathe comes from only ingesting the information they want to believe and completely disregarding or brushing off the information they don't want to see. Seriously undsportsfan, thanks for proving my point about racism being a racist term.

I know this post was buried in this thread, but I have to say, I hope so too,but this assumes Paukovich doesn't get to him first.

In case you are wondering, Brian Lee's 1-11-12 is good for a tie for second on the team in points (with Toews and Porter). His 9 in conference points (all assists) is good for a tie with Chris Porter for third on the team. I don't think that qualifies as "a little." As for whether he signs or not, I don't know. You're guess is as good as mine. The Ottawa GM said he was looking forward to Lee playing for Ottawa "in a couple of years." That's as open to interpretation as one can be. ============================== To prevent a double post, I went to see the F-M Jets play the U18 team tonight. I wasn't impressed with a lot of things (mostly the fact that for the first period and a half the U18 team looked rather tame and for basically the whole game the Jets weren't doing very well at passing) but the one person that did do some nice work (not counting those committed to a college already) was Cieslak of the U18 team. He was VERY strong on the puck and made a NICE move around a Jets defender and just missed scoring a goal (nice save by Lee). Austin Lee looked good despite giving up 4 goals and 1 empty netter (they lost 5-1). Really, only one goal (the 2nd goal) could be considered weak. He got left hung out to dry a couple of times and the first goal he gave up was one of the biggest fluke goals I've ever seen in person. The puck hit him on his right front just inside logo-ward of his armpit and rolled up his jersey. He made to grab or swat it away, which propelled it further up his jersey, over his shoulder, and into the net. The 3rd goal was what happens when you give up the puck right outside of the crease to two U18 players. Ridiculously bad defensive play by the Jets. The Sioux definitely saw the better of the two goaltenders the U18 had to offer (though the Jets PA Announcer pronounced Unice as "Uncle"). The key to Phillips is to get him to handle the puck behind his net. He gave up two HUGE turnovers that, had the Jets been able to actually get a stick on it (don't ask me how they missed, I seriously can't tell you) they would have scored an open net goal. Both the U18 team and the Jets missed on open net opportunities, but the Jets have the dishonor of whiffing twice to U18's once. Lastly, visiting the dump known as the Carlson Colloseum tonight made me thankful for two things: 1. Darren Looker. The Jets PA Announcer SUCKED big time. 2. UND has no mascot. "Ace" the mentally challenged Eagle was at best nonexistant, but usually REALLY REALLY LAME. Oh, and if you thought there was a lot of clutching and grabbing and missed calls last night vs. the Sioux, you should have seen this game. Lots of missed calls including some horrifically obvious tripping minors.

Hate to not be 100% anti Gopher, but I think the Gophers aren't totally at fault here. Wheeler crashed the net and was still skating hard towards Tormey when the Mav player made contact with him. This wasn't the Elliott debacle, but it was far worse, IMO, because Tormey ended up getting injured. In some ways, I think the Mav player (Brownlee I think it was) should have let Wheeler crash the net. If he hadn't touch him and Wheeler hit Tormey, that would have been (theoretically) a 5 minute major and a Game misconduct type penalty. Instead, a huge melee ensued. However, I'm TOTALLY surprised Brownlee didn't get ejected. He definitely threw some punches and I thought that warranted a misconduct, if not a DQ. I think UMN's calls were pretty fairly assessed (though Peltier's takedown using his stick around the Mav player's throat may have been more worthy of the 10 minute than WHeeler) and the Mavs ended up on the short end of the penalty list, which really hurts the consipracy theory of Minnesota getting the benefit of the calls twice over (Mavs have less in the box due to the melee and Brownlee wasn't ejected). That's my take on it. I hope Tormey's alright. If the Mavs are going to do anything as far as being a spoiler or making a late season run, they need Tormey healthy.

Would it be bad if I just said ditto to this? OETKB said it as good as I can.

I put him on ignore. Not that it matters. He'll be banned pretty soon. He's not even attempting to talk about the issues and still talking about attacking posters here. I hope Jim gives him a "vacation" soon.

What?!? UND is now responsible for affecting students' academic careers because a professor chooses to assign extra credit towards vilifying UND, a position that his students may not hold? That's just plain nuts! UND's part in this affair is a joke! This has nothing to do with the nickname and everything to do with a professor's inability to seperate his professional duties with his personal activism. I doubt you'd like it too much if I was your professor and I told you that extra credit would be given if you protest the Native American's abusive relationship with the White man when it comes to promoting gambling habits at their casinos. In fact, I'd expect you to be apalled! But way to attribute anything and everything unethical to the nickname. Doesn't help your cause at all. Just proves that there are corrupt and unethical professors at other universities who are perfectly willing to forward their personal agendas through the classroom.
-
Why did you change it? It just showed that this professor was more than one kind of a dope. Recreational drug usage is bad, mind you, but teaching while under the influence of said substances produces qualifications for teaching at SCSU.

I think we found out how much of the physical game we depend upon defensively. We weren't physical much last night that I saw and, though there was more skating involved and less hitting, it didn't seem as intense. I don't know. I think one of the major goals last night was to have no one get injured. We're headed into a stretch of games where injuries could be devastating to the Sioux.
-
Yeah. Unice was very good in what little I saw. He also gave the body language as he skated off the ice that he left it all on the ice tonight. I have a ton of respect for the NTDP program.
-
Now THAT would be hostile and abusive!

Ignorance showing, but, I thought you fried things on a stove?
