  1. Why is it that the trolls feel that when teams buy out FU it's because they are afraid of them but when teams choose not to schedule UND (basically the same thing) it's UND's fault. Perhaps FUs arrogance, athlete criminal issues and fan reputation are catching up to them?

After seeing some of the stuff tweeted to MSU's athletic account and comments left on their facebook page, I don't think the arrogance is just at the top.

  2. But the quote in the Forum made it seem like he did.

    http://www.inforum.c...icle/id/390293/

“I could understand if it were two years ago,” Taylor said. “But in February, that really bothers me. If I’m the commissioner, I don’t know if any of our schools would have done it, but it’s interesting it’s been done twice on us from Big Sky schools.”

Maybe I missed, it but who was the second team that bought them out? Or is he pulling SDSU into this about the Montana game?

As stated above, GT signed the contracts and they were fulfilled within the parameters of what was in them. Yes, it would have been a good game, but MSU's AD obviously saw a benefit in doing what he did.

  3. So some thoughts.... Perhaps UMKC moved to the WAC with inside knowledge that the Summit is going collapse. It appears that Creighton will not be leaving the MVC. WashingtonPost

Now if that happens, there will be no going to the MVC for the xDSUs. Perhaps Taylor's words aimed at the BigSky and the commissioner are not so much a result of MSU backing out, but rather a result of the BigSky turning down NDSU recently...

Who knows... Just some thoughts. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

If Detroit leaves the Horizon doesn't that opens up the spot Oakland wants there?

  4. Yes, NDSU will honor the return trip . . .always have, always will. Some sign contracts honestly, and some pull this kinda stuff in the 11th hour. It was clearly more about avoiding a loss than anything else for MSU. Don't really want to hear their BS reasons for backing out.

How can you say MSU didn't sign the contract honestly? GT agreed to a contract with a buyout and no deadline on that buyout. I've stated I wanted to see the game but to keep saying that MSU did something illegal or unethical when abiding by a contract that both they and NDSU signed is sour grapes. UND fans were upset when they got bought out, but I didn't see anyone calling out whole conferences or Commissioner's.

  5. I wouldn't be surprised to see Montana buy out the future game with NDSU too. Montana probably wouildn't appreciate GT remarks grouping all the Big Sky with Monatana State.

Pretty sure the Montana game is the front-end of a home and home. If Montana wants NDSU to travel there, I don't see them buying it out. But I concur about GT's comments. Makes you think they don't teach PR down at FU.

  6. Montana State bought out the game they were going to play in Fargo next year. Gene Taylor said "that's not the way you do business". Of course in this case Gene, it is perfectly legal to buy out a game. It's the illegal activity you should focus on Gene!

If it isn't how you do business, he shouldn't have let it into the contract.

That being said, I was looking forward to watching that game.

  7. Is that in fact been proven to be true? Would UND have the right to be picked up by Fox Sports North, which is the NCHC may view as outside our media footprint as it is based outside our state. Denver, Miami, and W Michigan's regional networks are based in their states.

Would UND be able to have a limited contract with Fox Sports North, specifically when playing any Minnesota school at home. Would it be able to have a contract with a Canadian regional network? Those are examples. The elimination of Fox College Sports as an option didn't affect anyone else adversely but UND. We are the only school that gave anything up. Denver / Miami / W Michigan will all get get on satellite by default, with their regional networks (Miami and W Mich supposedly have deals to be announced with Fox Sports Detroit and Fox Sports Ohio) that will allow them to have a national satellite system.

The only way to solve it is for MidCo to get available nationally. But really, would Direct TV or Dish TV actually have interest? Other regional networks are filled with MLB, NBS, and NHL and BCS programming. Denver hockey wouldn't get picked up nationally unless it was offered on the backs of Denver pro teams.

I believe that TV deal was up after this year and there was no guarantee of it being renewed, so unless someone has some information on that, it is possible that FCS may or may not have been an option next year anyway. Also, no one is aware whether UND made or even lost money with that deal.

Like most, I'm not real excited on all the aspects of the new deal, particularly the Friday night doubleheader clause, but I have faith in the athletic department to come up with solid solutions, especially being they have over 6 months to do so. They are well aware of the pride and demand of the alumni base for UND.

  8. They didn't make it a non-starter for Denver's regional carrier to be in multiple states. Cable in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, and western parts of Kansas / Nebraska / SD, as well as Colorado have that network.

Meanwhile, UND gets apportioned ND, SD, and NW Minnesota with Midco. Big difference there.

We have the same ability as the other schools to be picked up by a regional network. The problem is Midco is that regional option and they aren't as established as Root/Atlitude are. Not sure what kind of special deal UND would be able to broker unless I'm misunderstanding what your question is?

  9. What I don't understand is why UND didn't negotiate some type of TV privileges as a condition of entering the NCHC. After all, the conference needed us. Denver can be on regional networks that cover millions of people in multiple western states and get paid more than Midco could ever pay because of the potential audience. That Denver-based regional sometimes can be picked up on satellite or national cable. Same with Miami and W Michigan. Those two get on regional networks that cover millions of people, which also get picked up by satellite providers well outside their regional network areas. Meanwhile, UND is limited to the Dakota's for regional coverage, when there are tens of thousands of alumni in Minneapolis-St Paul alone as well as thousands in Denver and Phoenix and other cities. In other conferences, the power teams do get exceptions. Guess the NCHC and Faison didn't consider us a power team that was absolutely needed for the NCHC to succeed? We had the leverage for bargaining a special deal, but sounds like we didn't even attempt to get it. Mn-Duluth and St Cloud St could well get better regional deals than we could ever get, not because of their popularity, but because Fox North could well need their programming and have a greater potential audience just with the Cities. UND should at least have had regional rights in the five state Upper Midwest region as well as Western Canada.

I would guess in negotiations, CBSSN made this a non-starter. The good news is, if ratings and feedback is good, I wouldn't be surprised to see the number of games shown nationally increase year to year which has positive and negative consequences whether you have access to MidcoSports or not.

  10. It is hard to believe that Douple wasn't all over UND to try to get them into the Summit for baseball when you look at how unstable the baseball situation is in the Summit.

Logically, yes it is hard to believe. Looking at the track record, it really isn't.

  11. any attempt to lock out schools or conferences again would be met with swift anti-trust action. As it is, teams wanting to move up would have a solid case in court if they wanted/needed to.

Anyway alverez, like the saban and bensen also quote in this thread, was talking out his ass.

Is there a requirement for schools to play certain other schools? If the top 4 or 5 conferences only want to schedule games against each other to keep their strength of schedule up how would that give others a solid case? They can still claim that other teams have a chance to make it into the playoff, which would be true, just very, very unlikely under the current format.

  12. The big factor for me not going is kids, and my job. Is there really a lot of students that have both, and cannot attend. I swear if I lived in GF, I could attend all the games but my work schedule 11pm-7:30am doesn't give me much time to sleep, drive up to GF, attend game, drive back to Fargo, and then go to work. In Fargo there are signs everywhere for Bison this and Bison that. On billboards, on businesses, in people's yards. But when I drive up to Grand Forks...where is that? Where are the UND football billboards? Where are the yard signs showing hometown spirit. Marketing is crap compared to NDSU. I hate to compare it but as the only 2 schools in ND with DI sports its true. UND has a big time tv contract but its pretty sad come football time when you can't really feel the UND spirit until the Potato Bowl rolls down DeMers Ave.

My point was that different people have different priorities, whether it be school/work/family/anything. I'm not singling you out, just showing you that people have reasons for not going. UND football is not a priority to these people at this time. It was at one point and am very confident that it can be again in the very near future. As for marketing, there was a pretty decent push for season tickets and info about them joining the Big Sky last year including bilboards, mailers and phone calls.

  13. It is my understanding that CBSSN will be producing their own games, with their own crew and equipment. But my understanding could be wrong as there has been very little concrete information made available to us about this new deal.

Moreover, I suspect that when CBSSN picks up a UND game, Midco will not be broadcasting that game. Kind of like when NBCSN picks up a Wild game, FSN does not get to air it. I suspect UND is not eager to widely publicize this little tidbit of information with the public because there will be tens of thousands of fans within the Midco viewing area that will not be able to watch those particular UND games unless they upgrade to a sports-tier package.

I would agree that CBSSN would likely provide their own commentators if they have a contract with the NCHC. If that is the case, they likely may send up their own equipment. Agreed, not much has been shared on that front.

I had the opposite understanding on Midco airing the games. I was under the imperssion that they would be able to air all home games regardless of CBSSN picking it up. Maybe if Jayson knows, he can fill us in on the details.

  14. I am sick of hearing about attendance woe's due to hockey. Football games are not on Friday nights, and they don't play during a hockey game. So why can't people attend football games in the afternoon then go to the hockey game at night? I know hockey is king, but to keep using hockey as an excuse for people not showing up is getting pretty damn old. I know there are hockey only fans, and there are UND sports fans. We need more UND sports fans in that Alerus supporting UND football. Hockey gets attention above and beyond everything at UND but can't football get some spotlight? I hope with winning more games and a DI schedule more people will be at the Al this season.

Neither time nor money are unlimited. Haven't you said that is why you can't make it to every football game? I'm not saying I agree with people's reasoning or that I don't wish attendance was higher but people have been speaking with their wallets. UND has not put a product on the field they are willing to fill the Alerus for. The hockey team on the other hand, has been successful for an extended period of time and demand for tickets at the Ralph reflect that. I have faith that it can be done again with the football team, but it will take some good marketing from UND and continued success from the team. People missed out on an exciting team last year even if they were only 5-6. The buzz needs to build back up around the football program. Grand Forks loves a winner and this team hasn't been doing that against what people deem to be quality competition enough to justify them to come to the games. I think there will be a noticeable bump this year with the home schedule, but the team needs to be competitive and win.

  15. I don't know, but I'd assume CBSSN would bring their own HD equipment to every venue, like Fox North does. If not, apparently Midco is going to be doing HD from the Ralph next season. I don't know if that means the equipment will always be at REA for other networks to use. I would assume not though.

Midco is still doing every game whether it is on CBSSN or not correct? Not so certain that CBSSN would be sending their own equipment if they can pick up Midco's HD feed. I could be wrong though.

  16. Anyone know when homecoming is? The later the better as far as I am concerned. They should have it for either Sac St. or UNC. UNC is probably too late in the year though. That game will be poorly attended.

    Per UNDSports.com:

Aug 29th vs Valpo is Military Appreciation

Sept 7th vs SDSU is the Potato Bowl

Sept 14th vs UM is the Hall of Fame Game

Sept 28th vs MSU is Family Weekend

Oct 12th vs EWU is Homecoming

Oct 19th vs Sac St is ND Strong/Band Day (??)

Nov 9th vs UNC is Senior Day

Also shows updated pricing on seats.

  17. Looking at the UMN revenue number, I'd have to think they're allocating the FSN tv deal to their hockey team, whereas the MidcoSN tv deal that UND has is either being spread across the sports programs or just going into the AD's Office to be doled out as needed. I'm guessing that must be the case anyways because Mariucci has a lower capacity than the Ralph and I can't imagine the gophers are charging much more (if at all) for a seat than UND is.

I've seen the report these numbers come from (but have been unable to find it the last few times I've looked for it). The cost allocation has no rhyme or reason to it, it is a numbers game used for the reporting. I believe the same report shows NDSU's football team breaks even.

I am still curious on the source that says the Lincoln stars make $2MM with an average attendance of 4K or so (30 home games, 120K in total attendance). UND has twice as many fans coming through the doors averaging 11K+ (20-22 home games, total attendance of 240K+) with more expensive tickets. Revenues on the UND side are much higher. I'm sure expenses are as well, but good luck finding accurate and publicly available numbers for either.

  18. For the MVC, there are 3 schools more appetizing location-wise than NDSU and that doesn't take Denver into account. And at this point I don't see the MVC expanding unless Creighton leaves (wonder how they could keep the Omaha market if that were to happen?). Wonder if Denver has a large buyout? They may be rethinking their joining of the Summit.
