This game ended very similar to the last friday night the gophers played at the Ralph. They got the empty netter to make it 4-1 and then scored again.... saturday night und was the better team and won.

From what my memory recalls, since we started playing them again after realignment, UND has pretty much always lost the first game of the series at REA.

Our daughter's email recap of Sioux at Minny on Saturday 27 2007 while we were on a cruise.

    Hello Parentals:

    First Period:
Both teams came out strong and Minnesota made clear their intentions to play rough with anger by trying some pushing and stuff after the very first whistle.  The game was pretty even for the first half of the first period and then North Dakota scored the first goal (Zajac). Wooooooooooooo.  A couple of minutes later North Dakota scored again (Duncan). Yaaaaaaay!  Then the penalties started.  Apparently, we hadn't learned much from the game last night.  Basically, the rest of the first period involved the killing of penalties followed by more penalties all on our part of course.  Minnesota scored on a 5 on 3 to make it 2-1.  Then Minnesota scored again and again.  Two of their goals were on power play. So it was 2-3 towards the end of the period.  Then with a minute or two left. Bina cleared the puck from right next to our goal.  It bounced down the ice right on net and bounced right over the goalie's leg!  HA HA HA HA!  It was possibly the best goal I've ever seen.

    Second Period:
Briggs is in playing goalie now.  The other guy was probably too busy crying with shame to play this period.  Aha the first penalty is on us of course.  Interestingly Finley has not even been in the box yet. Penalty MN. Successfully killed.  Penalty Us. Successfully killed.  Penalty MN. (only their 3rd of the game)  Duncan scores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4-3.  Fabian Goal only seconds later!!!!!!!!!! 5-3.  coincidentals 4 on 4. oops penalty on duncan. 4 on 3 for a minute.  now 5 on 4... successfully killed.  Then of course another penalty on us. Successfully killed to bring us into the 2nd period break.  Bina got the hit of the game. and though MN had many chances this period they did not score.  woot

    Third Period:
I hate when announcers call the puck a biscuit.  Penalty on VandeVelde 2.5 minutes into the third.  Our 10th penalty. Successfully killed.  Penalty on MN shortly after ours is killed.  Oshie SCORES!!!!!! 6-3. oh he's so cute.  Trivia:  What 3 WCHA teams have never shut out the gophers at home?  A:  Alaska, Minnesota St. and UND.  Penalty MN.  Successfully killed.  Oshie SCORESSSSSSSSSSS!  And the fans are putting on their coats with 8 minutes left in the period. 7-3. Penalty on Finley.  Successfully killed.  Gophers look demoralized, just the way I like 'em. The crowd is cheering Overrated.  I am guessing the Sioux fans are the ones yelling as they seem to be the only ones left in the arena. Fight! with 17 seconds left.  someone's a poor loser.  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!  WE WON!!!!!! Suck it Gophers!  7-3 !  A Sweep!  woohoo!

Haha so funny. I actually had just transferred to UND during this season. I go home for Christmas and tell my parents UND isn’t very good at hockey this year lol. My parents make their first trip to GF to visit the weekend of this series. We win Friday so on Saturday morning my mom says to me “I thought you said UND wasn’t very good.”

Do we know Chesley's issue, the thing that's sore?
    Asking for a friend.

If it's a knee or ankle I'd hate for him to have to continually turn that direction. ;)

Gotta be upper body. Apparently his arm was in a sling after last Saturday’s game.

I also don’t know if he’s been skating. According to the practice report I saw, he didn’t practice on Wednesday. Not sure about yesterday though

Did Koster or Chesley make the trip?

What's UND's health status; any surprises?

I don’t know but I’m guessing Chesley made the trip. He is supposedly a game time decision. Koster was already ruled out so it probably doesn’t matter if he made it or not.

I think this is a great point. We are more senior in terms of games played, with Minny being rather young. I'd bet this will be the loudest and most raucous atmosphere a majority of their kids have ever played. Gotta come out hard.

Man, if we pot one early...

None of their defensemen that are playing this weekend played in the series last time it was at the Ralph. Koster is out and he’s the only one that has. So they are super young and inexperienced back there.

Im also interested to see how both team’s forwards match up.

This is one I was wondering if we would have any interest in? Older so would need to come in next year but I would think we could certainly make room with a few guys probably playing another year of juniors. And I just noticed that Heisenberg has Ausmus crossed out for us now? Anyone confirm he is no longer a commit?

We already have 3 defensemen scheduled to come in next year to replace the 3 we have that are out of eligibility. And I don’t think any of them are going to be playing another year of junior. Emery, Strathmann won’t be. Jubenvil ages out. So we’d have to make room for a ninth D unless there’s an unexpected departure.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Gruba, and would like him at UND, but just curious how we’d make room.

Sounds like we may be wearing green jerseys for fri night? Idk

Did you see this mentioned somewhere? I know there’s a green out but that usually doesn’t have anything to do with what we wear on ice so I’m assuming we will still wear white jerseys.

There's some obvious ones:  the timeout, Porter's wraparound, Bina's 180' shorty, Trupp's bat out of mid-air, etc.

A series of games that stand out to me happened in 2009.  In January, the Gopher's come to the Ralph highly ranked (maybe top 3?) and I believe the Sioux were unranked and about to start one of their famous second half turnarounds under Hakstol.  Sioux put on a clinic and unleash on 'em: 6-3 Friday and 6-1 Saturday.  Tons of scrums in the Saturday game.  Then the next season, in October 2009, in the Friday night game, the Sioux won 4-0 in similar style and the crowd is chanting "Just like last year."

I think they ranked were #1 at that point that year. UND was probably barely above.500. That series led to an absolute meltdown by Minnesota the rest of the season and they missed the NCAA’s.

Fair enough, but there was a clear difference in how that team functioned in the exhibition versus the one we saw all last year and it was glaring. It wasn't just the players executing, it was what they were doing.

I'll make this clear... I'm not saying this team won't have bumps.... I'm saying that what I saw was very impressive and I'd be very surprise to see a significant drop from that level.

I don’t have an in depth analysis on my reasoning why I thought the defense looked significantly better than last year. Because there wasn’t much d-zone play. But just watching them skate the puck out of zone so comfortably without a lot of panic just felt different than last year. Especially with the top 6 D.

Last year I thought the weakness on D was that third pairing, no matter who was on it. The fact that we can pair Livanavage and Wiebe with experienced seniors in the top 4 D and then roll out a third pairing of Britt and Zmolek is something I really like.

    Updated stats thru 10/9:

Croal, Littler, Panzer, Boisvert, Strathmann, and Zellers all continue their strong starts.
Slower start to the season for O'Neill and Simpson.

    USHL (Forwards)

    • Emery (NTDP U18) - '06: 8gp - 0g/3a
    • Laurila (NTDP U18) - '06: 8gp - 1g/0a

    USHL (Goalies)

    • Heil (Sioux Falls) - '06: 3gp - .889/2.97 (3-0)

    Other

    • Ausmus - BCHL - '04: 5gp - 0g/2a
    • Singleton - AJHL - '04: 9gp - 3g/7a
    • Pilgrim - MN HS - '06: 0gp - 0g/0a
    • Zellers - SSM - '06: 10gp - 13g/6a
    • Schultz - MN HS - '06: 0gp - 0g/0a

Not sure how production to expect out of Simpson this season. He’s been playing on the 4th line for Tri City according to recent line charts so it’s not like Boisvert or Swanson last year who both were immediately placed in their team’s top 6. But we’ll see how the season progresses.

I was under the impression it's done after the first goal scored by the home team (based on TBT games watched/attended), but if UND does it differently then that's for the best.

They used to do it after the first goal years ago but more recently it’s been done at intermission. A lot of other schools have also started doing it at intermissions.

Not fun on TV, and the novelty is worn off in person. Also can kill momentum/ flow of the game. Best case scenario is to score early in the game or late in the first period.

Don’t they do the teddy bear toss at intermission anyway? At least it was last time I went to one. So how would it affect the flow of the game?

Is Motzko not showing interest or just not offering some of these players quite yet. They've been very quiet on recruiting since aug 1st. Just two commitments since then?.... and a decommitment

I’m not sure but it doesn’t seem like they are putting up much effort yet with this class compared to what they were doing with the previous class last year. Maybe they are just being more selective. I’ve barely heard of them even being in on guys that have committed to other schools.

Zellers barely a week into the season and already with double-digit goals.

Why do you think Zellers has only been playing a week? If he’s played 8 games already, and there’s 7 days in a week, it’s definitely been longer than a week. Probably closer to 3 weeks.

He's still a Pittsburgh kid. I rule nothing out now that Cooley is gone. But east won't surprise me.

UND and Minnesota have been said to be his top choices for months now. And based on his Instagram, that checks out.
So unless that has changed, I just don’t expect him to go East.

Also - if he doesn’t go to Minnesota, I think someone may need to check on their fans. I think they are going to lose it real soon. (If they haven’t already)

With his cousin Cooley now a 'yote, I suspect Mooney is looking B1G or east. I could be wrong and I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised.

I'd guess Lindberg is the top call they still have high hopes to get.

My pipeline tracking chart says they're likely close to done save for those mentioned or a goalie (a third to replace KJ Cheese).

I really do not think Mooney has any plans to go East.

A hockey pundit tweeted (I'm paraphrasing) that Eiserman was offered a 6 figure NIL deal by a blue blood out east sometime over the summer.

For what it's worth CHN's article says there's speculation it's due to a sick family member. But until that's confirmed NIL will be the rumor.

I also heard about it on a podcast being more related to family. So I’m more inclined to go with that reasoning. Especially when you consider he has been away from home for a while between his time at the NTDP and Shattuck.

Wow. Part of me was thinking he wouldn’t even make it to campus with how well he’s been playing. But this is super surprising. Someone hide the weapons at the GPL poster houses!

I’m still not convinced he makes it to a college campus. If he’s projected to go top 3 in the draft, things can change quickly after you’re drafted.
