  1. I guess the main thing I was pointing out was that rule that I was unfamiliar with. Another thing to think about is that UMD needs wins to get above .500. Therefore, the UMN/UMD games have that on the line. If either team gets swept, it's probably lights out.

According to THIS SITE, the ".500 rule" does not exist.

Edit: It seems USCHO got the message too:

A new qualifying provision that seemed to require a team to have at least a .500 overall record for an at-large bid has been identified by the NCAA as a misprint in the 2008 Championship Handbook, in an email received by USCHO.com. .........Jayson Moy's Bracketology column will be republished later today.
  2. I expected a one-game suspension, a little surprised by the two game.

The fact remains, you can't do this kind of stuff and not expect some sort of consequence. I have faith in Eades, and these kids will be playing their butts off against Denver.

I'm just hoping Hakstol autographs my "bird" picture.

Like I said on GPL, UND wouldn't have suspended him if the whole nickname thing was still very much up in the air. That's a huge part of this, IMO.

    Very good point.

  3. I have a question regarding tie-breakers.

I ran the what-if, and ended up with the Sioux in a three way 39 point tie with CC and DU.

Since we split every series, how do they break the tie? Points scored head to head?

  4. I took my family to both games in Mankato, and plan on going back next year. Students are what they are, both there and here. Older drunken fans are what they are, again both there and here.

All that aside, I was part of a fun hockey atmosphere with the Mankato crowd. There was some healthy ribbing of the other team, and some good hockey conversation too. The fans I sat by were pretty cool, and fun to visit with.

Much to the chagrin of many on this board, IMO they have the best goal song in college hockey. Not that the song is that great, but EVERYONE in the building participates. Hell... I was about to get into it with their 3rd Sat goal. I wish we had something like that.

nutshell point: the few bad apples argument

  5. YOU don't pay for his scholarship (the Fighting Sioux boosters and other avenues do).

For the record, a number of members here, including me, are FSC members and indeed do contribute a great deal of money toward athletic scholarships. That said, I think I can be entitled to be a little pissed off when he screws up in public for a second time, and has to miss a game. (mind you, a game that I'm paying his athletic scholarship to play in... as you recall, we lost 2 conference points that night) :D

And when people try to support HIM, you crucify them on this board. b]

Support him all you want. That's great. I haven't given anyone crap for supporting Oshie. Above that, I'm greatful he's still on the team. But I can still be pissed about the incident.

BTW, you exaggerate a bit. Lighten up, Francis.

  6. I was a goalie and that happened to me just one time, I came out to play the puck and was looking to who i was gonna pass it to and totally missed the puck and it went into the net at like half a MPH, I was so embarrassed i got the equipment manager to carry my pads and sticks to the bus, so none of their fans could recognize, that should be a one or two a career occurrence, not once a year and definately twice a game, he should apologize to every player on his team and to every fan that supports him.

I scored a goal that way in Pee-Wees. Even the scorer catches crap for those goals. (not as much and as bad, I'm sure) :D

  7. Seeing Kozek mantioned as a top-line player, was he an injury scratch on Saturday or a healthy scratch?

if it's the latter, I don't think we'll see him on the front line any time soon...

if it's the former, who knows?

  8. I had sent in the FSC "application" for away tickets to this game, but cancelled after I saw 3rd row tickets on the Sioux end available through Ticketmaster.

If anyone's at the Holiday Inn, stop and have a drink with the "airmail" family. (kids will likely be in the pool, wife will likely be on her laptop, I'll be making sense of it all with a Bud-light in hand)

Since we have the kids along, BWW sounds like a great pre-game place to grab a beer and bite. See you there!

  9. Thanks! So has PCM given up on us at SS.com?

I don't know, but he hasn't posted in 2008... odd for him, that's for sure.

There was some heated debate in another thread, and is likely the reason he's stayed off the board for a bit. Probably good advice to all of us when some topics get a little heated, personal, etc.

  10. TJ Oshie getting into a fight with an opposing player in an elevator is about the best thing that has happened for our team since winning the regional championship game last year.

For those of you astute enough to realize it, our season last year was salvaged by a Kiap fight against UAA that saved our honor at the Ralph from utter embarrassment (no thanks to lame home crowds not helping matters). Fighting is part of hockey (despite the NCAA meddling in the character of the sport) and this fight will go down in the annals of College hockey lore- something fans in grand forks seem to have forgotten about in recent years. Ya it wasn't on the ice but I'll put my money on the, it will be a classic.

For those of you wanting to write this as a character assassination on Oshie, you're all lame limp politically correct droids. You have no touch with reality. Go clean your garage you probably missed a spot. You deserve the wash of the media spew you think is news.

You worry about your kids being disappointed by Oshie's fistfight, you are disappointed in his letdown as a role model. Go buy your kids X-men or Fantastic Four. Maybe go with Rambo or turn on some classic Clint fightwood movie. Maybe some Chuck Norris? Heck you live in Grand Forks go send em to the military, Maybe the national guard, where they can learn to defend North Dakota in IRAQ or Afghanistan with an M-16. Kill'n people always makes thing so much better you know.

Just anything to get them to stop looking up to the kid who turned down a million dollars to kick some opposing players *ss in an elevator. That could destroy his sensitivities for life.

Hey maybe Oshie could go to New England and play for Belichick!

Oh by the way try making some noise at a homegame, I know it's winter time in North Dakota but they have medication for that now.. Wake up and get some passion for a team your lucky to have.

    Losers!

Thanks for the novel about how this fight is going to turn the season around.

BTW, Oshie wasn't in a fight.

  11. College hockey players have been doing this kind of thing at most schools for 50 years or more. The difference now is that police departments, school administrations and coaches are no longer able to sweep this kind of thing under the rug... Society has become much more transparent and the media and personal communications much more pervasisve.

And I don't think you can reasonably compare UND hockey players to regular UND students - they are not regualr students like you and I. UND hockey players VERY SPECIAL and very different from you and I. They are given thousands of dollars in free education, the best facilities, equipment and coaching in America, great media exposure and instant celebrity status as the most important, high profile athletes in the state. UND is also a very high profile hockey program that has a very proud tradition and is rightfully seen as one the very best in the country. In return for their talents, the players wear the name of their university and state on their chests, and represent your school and your state to all others. Wearing that jersey should be a tremendous privilege for each Sioux player, and when they sign on the dotted line, a player needs to understand that, along with the great rewards that come with it, as school and state ambassadors, they also take on certain responsibilities to act in a manner that brings honor to their school and state. That repsonsibility should include acting in an exemplary manner -- not getting arrested. If they want to party and get into trouble like regular students do, then great - just don't be a D-I athlete then.

That's what I was trying to say. Excellent post.
