  1. Congrats on "dealing" with the media. Also, thank you for explaining the ND Century Code to every member of the media. Oh wait... you didn't. However, you just lumped every journalist in North Dakota into one giant group by calling them "the media." Of course, there are idiot journalists... but there are idiots in every profession. I truly hope you don't judge every reporter the way your post indicates. I'm sure lots of people would like that in-depth news story more than 10 feel-good stories. However, the two are nowhere close to the amount of time it takes to put together. Just for TV's sake, because that's where I have my experience, one of the feature stories will take about an hour to shoot, write and edit one version. 2 reporters could do those 10 feature stories in one day, no problem. And most do. To do a properly researched in-depth story takes WAY more than two reporters working a 10 hour day. Most in-depth stories (look for them, because they are there. They may just not be the topic you want covered) take a reporter a solid week of working on a story to put together. One reporter, doing one story for an entire week isn't going to help the station stay in business. They may get a couple hours here and there to work on the story, but still have all of the daily stories they must do. That means it's going to take 2-3 weeks to put together a more in-depth story. Often times, a reporter will want to do an investigative piece, however a journalist relies on other people for information. Journalists need sources and not all sources are willing to talk. Especially, on very touchy subjects. Those sources that are willing to talk may have an agenda, they may be too busy for an interview for a few days, or may not want to answer specific questions. All of those things are out of the journalists hands. If someone doesn't want to answer a question, they don't have to. Does that mean the journalist didn't ask the question? No, but of course that's what everyone assumes. A lot of things have to fall in to place for a well-done in-depth story to make it to the air or newspaper. Just because national publications and broadcasts can do it, doesn't mean local reporters can. They most often don't have the skill and more importantly, they don't have the resources.
  2. That's crap. Most of today's reporters aren't given the time to work on a story that involves "digging." Stations and newspapers are so understaffed that reporters and photographers work their asses off just to get enough for one day's show or newspaper. They are so swamped with daily work that they don't have time for the in-depth stories. It's not just asking a tough question or two like many of you seem to think. There are tons of legal ramifications for publishing or airing a story that some may see as questionable. In addition, while the reporter may ask the tough questions, there is nothing that says the interviewee has to answer those questions.
  3. There's still 22 minutes before the 1st game and it looks like the picks are locked and I can't enter mine.
  4. That is because the logos for the main scoreboard and the side board have to have the same logo. Air Force chose the ND logo because there are too many colors in the Indian head logo for it to look sharp. The ND also looked better with the AF for Air Force.
  5. Anyway I can buy a UND Cycling team jersey? I'm in the market for one, but I haven't seen any available online and I like the design of the jersey.
  6. I usually go to a bar called Hondos when the sioux are on TV. They get all of the regional networks, so I watched the Gopher series there and the Denver series this weekend. It's a decent sports bar with good drink specials, located off Centennial Drive just north of Garden of the Gods road.
  7. Digital cable is much lower quality than directv or dishnetwork. Digital cable is extremely encoded because of issues with bandwidth. Fiber is helping to fix that, but it's not installed everywhere yet. Satellites offer much higher quality HDTV compared to digital cable.
  8. You really think he is being greedy? KVLY/KXJB have had numerous job cuts in the past year or two because of dropping numbers of viewers and increased expenses. It's something happening at stations throughout the country, not just in Fargo/Grand Forks. Advertising fails to make enough money to cover all of the costs involved in running a television station, especially during the change to digital. Charley Johnson is doing what will help the business he works for survive. Without getting reimbursement (which many, many other stations already get) for the service his stations provide, KXJB/KVLY would become even more of a bare-bones operation. The two stations have combined newscasts as a way to help cut costs, while trying to bring up advertising revenue to help keep the stations alive. They have double the time to advertise thanks to simulcasting on both channels. KXJB doesn't just feed their newscasts to directv, comcast, midcontinent, dishtv, etc. They feed all of CBS' programming as well. The fee is less about getting paid for the newscasts, but more about getting paid for the the 22 1/2 hours of other programming they air each day. You can be pissed all you want at Charley Johnson, but it's not his fault. His hand is being forced by the stations' owners (Hoak Media) and by dwindling viewers and advertising revenue. He's hoping enough people complain to Directv which would create enough pressure to force Directv to make a deal.
  9. hextall
  10. Smaby picks up his 1st nhl point with an assist in tonight's game.
  11. so, now that that game is over... congrats to the winner. i'll take Hextall
  12. you can have your skate in the crease. in fact, you can have both skates in the crease, as long as you're not interfering with the goaltender.
  13. directv is offering free nhl center ice for a bit, so i'm able to watch toews, parise, zajac, commodore, porter and oshie all play tonight. plus, i'm sure a few more games I haven't even really looked at. p.s. parise scored for NJ's only goal so far against the islanders.
  14. i ran into this problem too. You have to go to purchase packages and then scroll down and you'll see the audio only option. "buy" that and you'll be good.
  15. for anyone who is just listening to audio, you can head over to yahoo sports and watch the blackhawks vs rangers game for free
  16. yeah, I have an account and listened to many games last season. I've logged out, closed my browser, reopened it, logged back in and still nothing.
  17. anybody else not able to listen to the audio on fightingsioux.com? I'm logged in, but it says "this account can't play video." I don't want to play video, I'm trying to listen to the supposedly free audiocast.
  18. The game won't be broadcast on directv. If you google "College Football TV Schedule" the top link is a great compilation of what games you can check out on direcTV. Unfortunately, the Sioux don't have any this year so far.
  19. if i were a college athlete, i would think the opportunity to play for a conference championship would be more enticing than playing for no post-season title at all. that is why this conference MAY be a good idea. Especially during the transition period where normally football would have the only chance for post-season success.
  20. he had already turned to start introing whatever he was going to. he didn't diss him on purpose i'd imagine. how often do you see the handshake afterwards? not very and you could tell lammy was confused as to what to do once he was done with the interview. don't get pissed at gorg, it wasn't intentional i'm sure.
