Here's an idea: How about discussing something in this thread that's related to the subject line?
  2. I can only dream of turning pro on the Love Boat.
  3. It might be that in the process of my paraphrasing of Hennessy's questions for the sake of brevity, they come off as sounding more inflammatory than they really are. If that's the case, it's my fault, not Hennessy's. I think Tim asks very good questions in a non-confrontational manner. He also makes a point of asking the questions that people are asking him, which is what makes the show such a valuable source of information.
  4. A) These are not exact quotes from Hennessy. He might have mentioned Stafford and I might have missed it. B) You're misinterpeting some of his comments. C) Regarding the Parise comment, Hennessy was paraphrasing something that Tony Gasparini, a former goalie, said to him after the Frozen Four.
  5. Very true. And slavery was legal at one time, too, because the majority approved of it. What bothers me about the thinking of Jackson and those like him is not only that they believe the minority should dictate to the majority, but also that a minority of a minority should be allowed to trample the right of free expression simply because they are offended by something. I remain unconvinced that the majority of American Indians in this country believe that sports teams should be prevented from using Native American nicknames if they're used in a respectful manner. The NCAA's own policy demonstrates that there are tribes scattered throughout the country who have absolutely no problem with the practice. After more than 30 years of debating this issue, those who oppose nicknames such as the Fighting Sioux have been unable the convince the majority of the allegedly offended minority that they are, in fact, being harmed or abused.
  6. I liked the attitude displayed by the coaches on last night's Fighting Sioux Coaches' Show. They were excited about the group of players returning for next season. And why shouldn't they be? Hakstol said that we've barely had a glimpse of Kozek's goal-scoring talent. Duncan was a very pleasant surprise. Kaip is a solid player who seems to have found a scoring touch and has been named Prpich's heir apparent. Watkins developed very well at the center position. Miller filled in well for Fabian and should improve with more playing time. Fabian, Porter and Bina will provide great experience and leadership. If some combination of Oshie, Toews and Spirko returns (or all three), their skill - combined with the promising freshmen forwards - will give the Sioux plenty of scoring punch. If Parise doesn't return, Lamoureux has proven to be very good. All he needs is a team that scores more goals for him. The defensive corps, even without Smaby, will be sound. Chorney, Jones and Lee had very good rookie seasons. Finley will continue to improve, as all big UND defensemen have under Brad Berry. Radke improved greatly over his freshman season and will only get better. I have high hopes for him, both as a team leader and as an offense-oriented defenseman. In other words, I think the outlook for next season at this time is a heck of a lot better than it was for last season at this time. Even with the expected departures, there aren't as many holes to fill and there's a solid foundation upon which to build.
  7. You might be reading too much into it. Mike Commodore said his reason for turning pro early was pretty simple: money. He was tired of being a poor college student. Thinking back to my days as a poor college, it's not difficult for me to relate to his point of view. Hakstol might have been referring to Spirko's rumored situation, but it's also likely that he was talking about how much easier life is when you don't have to worry so much about money.
  8. Not to mention the fact that in 1886, Roosevelt gave a speech in New York in which he was quoted as saying: "I suppose I should be ashamed to say that I take the Western view of the Indian. I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are, and I shouldn't like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth." Nothing hostile or abusive about that, eh?
  9. So the word's out on the street? Dang!
  10. Hennessy said by the time he's a senior. Chris Collins?

    Early outs

Tim Hennessy is reporting on the radio this morning that Smaby's departure is "imminent." The Herald also quotes Oshie and Spirko as saying that they will definitely be back next year.
  12. I cannot comment on all the rumors swirling around me.
  13. From the Green Mill, Tim Hennessy and Scott Swygman are the hosts with Sioux hockey coaches Dave Hakstol, Brad Berry and Cary Eades. TH: We wrap up the season that ended up with a loss to Boston College at the Frozen Four in Milwaukee. The Sioux were one loss shy of Wisconsin as the only team in the country with 30 wins. It was an outstanding season. The key word was
  14. I never said he was disrespectful. I do, however, think his analysis of what the Sioux should have accomplished using 20/20 hindsight is silly.
  15. Fine. I don't have to use any polls because it's simply a matter of opinion as to whether the Sioux overachieved or not. You're basing your opinon entirely on 20/20 hindsight. It's easy at this point in time to say that the Sioux were a good team and had a legitimate shot at winning a national championship once they got through the regionals. Nobody is debating that. Once they got to the Frozen Four, they had as good as shot as any team there of winning it all. Nobody is debating that. (I could, however, use your own reasoning against you and say that because Wisconsin was hosting the Frozen Four in Milwaukee, no team other than the Badgers could possibly have won it.) I'm looking at the season in its totality, not just the end. It's one thing to have a team with a lot of great young talent and another thing to bring that talent together as a team, a team that plays well together consistently throughout the playoffs. We found out during 2001-2002 season just how difficult that is to accomplish. Contrary to what you believe, it's not a foregone conclusion. I understand your bitterness about the Gophers throwing away their chances for post-season success, but coming here to berate the Sioux for failing to accomplish what you thought they should isn't going to change the fact that your favorite team underachieved on a scale of Biblical proportions.
  16. Yes, and go back and check the posts here to see how realistic Sioux fans thought that was. The WCHA coaches were far more realistic than INCH and, as it turned out, more accurate. So were most Sioux fans who post here.
  17. Hakstol said nothing about this on tonight's Fighting Sioux Coaches' Show.

Mike, I might not have always agreed with some of the things you did on the ice, but on the few occasions I was priveleged to talk with you, you were always a gentleman off the ice. You have left an indelible mark on Fighting Sioux hockey, and for that, you are to be commended. Sioux fans will remember your time at UND for generations to come. Thanks for the great memories, for your hard work, for playing through pain when the team needed you and for leading by example. You will be missed.
