Yeah, that guy. Who had any idea that he might be a decent pro hockey player, especially when it was obvious that his true talent was music? Who could ever forget the melodic power ballad "Fabian"? This is one of those rare instances in which the pro scouts actually had a clue. I'm amazed.

Nick Coleman's column is a great illustration of your point. Like many other opponents of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname, he can't leave Ralph Engelstad out of the discussion, even though Engelstad's been dead for years. And Coleman can't resist mentioning his favorite fantasy -- tearing down Engelstad Arena. So even if UND decided today to drop the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, Coleman and his ilk would continue to complain about Engelstad Arena. They would continue to boycott it and continue to insist that the NCAA hold no events there. Until all traces of Engelstad's association with UND are erased, they won't be satisfied. Anyone who thinks the controversy will disappear with the nickname is sadly mistaken.

And that's a valid point, which has been discussed here and brought up in UND's DI committee meetings. I think the logic is a bit flawed at this point, however, because the list of DI schools that will play UND absolutely dwarfs the list of schools that won't.

Because one of the major objections is that Chief Illiniwek, as he currently exists, is a white portraying an Indian. Look, I'm not saying that I object to the Chief. The point was to show that Nick Coleman proclaimed Illinois honorable and decent for getting rid of a symbol that UND doesn't have while holding on to a nickname that's very similar to UND's. Right now, the only difference between the two schools is that UND has an Indian logo it uses while Illinois has one it doesn't use. The gap between them isn't as great as Coleman claims. My blog wasn't about a historical perspective. It referred to Chief Illiniwek as he is now, which was 100 percent accurate.

That's fine, but it's not the point. The current Chief Illiniwek that the University of Illinois abandoned is white and male. My blog addressed what the Chief is now, not what he's been in the past. I never said that.

No it doesn't. Meaning what?

I'm sending him an e-mail, too. The moral superiority of universities with cartoon mascots is amazing to behold.

That can't be the same Drew Stafford who played for the Sioux. He wasn't NHL material.
