  1. If you read that article posted on the mav's message board, he correctly identifies UND as the Fighting Sioux. So I just wonder did the writer miss it when looking at it, did the editor? Sure the headline isn't correct so what. As for bulletin board material, you've gotta be kidding me. If you read the article you will probably have the same questions as to who messed up and didn't catch it.

the headline being incorrect is a big deal, when your job is print. and it might have been the editor, it might have been someone else, but the point is that although most likely an honest mistake, it still is a big deal for the largest print paper in nebraska. it's not bulliten board material, just an embarrasing mistake for the herald.

  2. That is pretty pathetic for a big time newspaper! I lived in Omaha, and they have a very rabid, loyal hockey fan base. I'm sure the hockey beat writer is pretty embarrased, as he should be. But it's not like UND is a national powerhouse that has won 7 national championships  and its not like UNO is in the same conference

Sioux take 3 hard earned points. 4-4 friday, 5-3 saturday with an empty netter.

  3. From wcha.com there may be a ruling later today.

i would be very surprised if there was a suspension... are we now basing suspension on if someone gets injured or not? does a malicious hit without injury slide while a clean, hard hit with horrible ramifications get a suspension? that is a slippery slope to go down. but this is mcclown and the wcha, so i guess nothing would surprise me. there isn't a single hockey fan who doesn't wish for a speedy and full recovery for jesse, from all we've learned about him this week, he is one of the good ones in the game, we need more like him. but whether or not malone gets suspended should not be based on the fact that jesse broke his neck. paukovich intentinoally slaughtered bina and broke his neck, one game. marvin headhunted genoway, one game. all this being said, if they determine any head contact is a game suspension and they give malone a game, ok. but we all know that the wcha and mcclown won't be consistent or follow through on anything, because if they give malone a game for contact to the head, they will be handing them everyweekend of the season until they make mens hockey a non-contact sport. this rant is obviously not aimed at you, but the wcha and how they handle these matters.

  4. Malone my not play friday.

unless he is not playing for personal reasons, or the coaches are keeping him out (which i don't see them doing)... he will be playing. there has not been, and will not be a suspension.

    Friday - Gregoire

    Saturday - Frattin

  5. I shouldn't be too surprised, and I never get too worked up about anything posted over there as their loyalties obviously lie east of the appalachians, but the INCH first shift gave the Alaska goalie national player of the week. That in itself I have no problem with, he gave up 2 goals in 2 big wins,,, but Frattin not even a runner up? Here are the runners up (none of which had the stats Frattin did, if thats one major factor)... Cam Atkinson of BC (the only team to play a quality opponent other than UND) had 2 goals (one an empty netter) and 2 assists on the weekend, Chase Polacek of RPI had 2 goals, 2 assists, Justin Shultz of Wisco had 2 goals and 3 assists, and Everett Sheen of HC had 2 goals and 3 assists. All nice weekends (mostly against weak competition), but none had the stat line that Frattin did of 4 goals and an assist, at a WCHA opponents barn opening their new rink. Like I said, this is nothing new from INCH, but Frattin deserves some props for his huge weekend (he will most likely get WCHA player of the week). And if we're not just looking at stat lines... Frattin was a beast in every aspect of the game!

  6. Gregoire has NOT played center. And according to Hak, he will not be playing center this year. Too good along the wall. He didn't play center in juniors either. Hextall has played center in juniors, as has Trupp. Guys like Lammy & Rowney played center last year, so I'm not sure depth is a concern on the bottom 2 lines, I think it's depth on the top lines that might be an issue? That said, I think we'll be okay. I think Knight will do well up there.

once knight got moved to his natural center position last season, he thrived. i think he will be a pleasant surprise this season, and a great option for a top line center. like someone said earlier, nelson could end up being a top line center sometime this season too. i cant wait for the season!!

  7. I know that most of this is probably spread out over the nickname thread, sioux hockey 2010-11, and others, but thought we could have a thread dedicated to stories, memories, predictions, or whatever for the final "official" season as the Fighting Sioux. Kind of sad, although I know it is time to move on. The tradition is not the Fighting Sioux name, but the program, coaches and players of the past and future, and the NC$$ can't take that no matter how hard they try. So favorite Sioux memories? Predictions for the final season?

The final Sioux-Goof series in January should be great! And hopefully they can march to the X in April as one last big, stinky finger to the NC$$!

  8. So the new BTHC has 6 teams, enough for an autobid, which is all that matters, and all they really care about besides money. Rivalries and conference integrity in the rest of college hockey is not on their radar. WCHA loses powerhouse UW and bottom halfer Minny. CCHA hit hardest losing Mich, Mich St, and Ohio St. And Penn State makes it a legit autobid conference. From what has been out there for months (years), Notre Dame has no interest in the Big Ten in any sport. There are infinite ways conferences could be realigned, and maybe college hockey could take this time to do a full overhaul, but realistically there will be minimal changing and shifting. I am probably in the minority here, but I couldn't care less what conference we are in, or who else is in it. Obviously it makes sense to stay aligned with the remaining minnesota schools (we lose to bottom feeder mn school, so no big loss :D ). I would also like to see us stay aligned with UNO and the Colorado schools, but who knows. But bottom line is that UND is the upper tier of college hockey, and will continue to be. I would miss games against Minny and Wisco, but hope and pray that we wouldn't schedule them unless it was for equal games home and away. Screw both of them if they think their enormous non-conference schedule will all be coming to their rinks (which alot will just to play them). I am all for some expansion, and actually I am for a full realignment, but not sure of the reality of this. With Nebraska in the big 10, 12 whatever it is now, they could add a team with UNO being a rivalry right down I-80. And big 10 schools have money, so another could add a program, eventually making it an 8 team conference. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. In the meantime, lets kick the !@$! out of UW and Minny while they are still in our conference and get #8!

  9. I didn't see this posted elsewhere, and couldn't think of a different place, but here's a Canadian take on the rise of US prominence in amateur hockey, epsecially at the U-17 and U-18 levels.

    Linky

i think the most telling part of the article about hockey canada, and how they feel about themselves and the rest of the hockey world, was his quote saying he would like the wjc and u-17 moved to either the begining or end of THEIR season so it doesn't interfere with THEIR club teams. we all know that canada thinks highly of themselves in reguards to hockey, but to have "world" tournaments scheduled around canadas junior hockey schedules seems a bit arrogant. we could probably schedule the winter olympics around any canadian holidays also so we don't cause any conflicts there also :D

  10. Unless there are unforseen circumstances, Leddy will play in the AHL this year. It's obvious that Chicago wanted him in the AHL this year vs. UMTC - and Leddy and family agreed.

There is a track record for both UND and UMTC re: pro development.

If Leddy was skating with UND, I believe he stays for in soph. year.

i completely agree... chicago didn't seem to have a problem letting toews develop another year at und, and he turned out ok :D

  11. i'm guessing its the kid that hak, eades and jackson were talking to at kings walk saturday. saw them as we were making the turn at the state bestball. i wasnt paying that close attention, but the kid had some size. whoever it was, if it was a big timer, hopefully hak and co. convinced him to wear the green and white!

  12. I don't recall there being a hockey arena of any consequence near UT. Texas could add as many hockey teams as it wanted just from its endowment, but they aren't going to do so unless they produce winners. That's really their bottom line. Moreover, I don't see any real benefit for Texas to join the Big10, or any real benefit for Nebraska either. Somehow a Texas-Minnesota football game doesn't have ring as Texas-Oklahoma or an A&M game.

Perhaps the Big10 would be better off whoring itself to Notre Dame, and call it a day.

i think that notre dame always has been, and always will be the big 10s first choice. that being said, unless something changes, notre dame has stayed committed to being an independent. the big 10 is really pushing to move forward with this, so they are exploring other avenues. i don't know how the academics of the aforementioned schools fits in, but since they are on the list i will assume they all fit the criteria. i know others have mentioned that texas would be the first choice, but i actually see nebraska and syracuse as very viable options for a big 10 expansion, and both could add a hockey program, which would be a nice bonus, but not the driving force.

  13. ;)

I caught the game on XM radio last night on the way home. XM carried the WGN feed. I didn't know that Troy Murray was part of the Blackhawks broadcast team. Another UND connection. :glare:

yeah he was on xm204 at lunch the other day. the more sioux connections the hawks have, the better their chances of winning are :D

  14. I don't claim to be connected or anything but I have heard about the hockey in Lincoln debate but...

Anyone who's been to Omaha or Lincoln knows that this place is Husker Football and Creighton Basketball country.

I guess i just don't see it working in Lincoln.

lived in omaha, went to creighton, and you are correct that husker football is number one in that part of the country, by a large margin. bluejay bouncyball is probably number two, but omaha in particular (and i would imagine lincoln) is a great sports city. they support both uno and lancer hockey pretty well and there are some hardcore hockey fans in omaha, so it is possible a hockey team in lincoln would do ok. plus the added bonus of a uno/husker hockey rivalry would be a nice bonus. im not saying it would jump above husker football or creighton basketball, but does it need to to be successful? heck, you could argue that gopher hockey is the third or fourth sport at the u of m, but i think it is still a successful program. i am all for more college hockey programs if it strengthens the sport as a whole. i don't like the big 10 hockey conference idea, but with $$$$$ the driving factor, there are alot of reasons for it to happen.

  15. A suggestion for music after the Sioux score.

maybe it's just me, but that might be one of the worst songs i've ever heard :silly: i realize these guys sell a ton of records and it is probably a very popular song, but i might have to get up and leave if they start playing this at sioux games... no offense to you geauxsioux, just not my style

  16. If the 'Hawks win the Cup, may Toews can buy himself a real playoff beard, and get rid of the mutton chops. :glare::silly:

it's almost as bad as kane's "beard", i just hope toews doesn't try the mullet experiment like kane... that thing is hideous :D

  17. i know it's been talked about at length, but toews is a man possessed in the playoffs, adding another goal and assist last night in a huge win. he's the leader of a team that looks destined to win a cup or three, and at 22. he's already tied stan mikita's franchise postseason game scoring streak record, and i believe now only 7 pts (?) behind the alltime blackhawks single postseason point mark, not sure who holds it? hull maybe. its fun to watch him work, another nice article on him, seems like they have a toews article every other day, they are going to run out of things to write soon :silly:

  18. Why are the playing two on Sunday and two today instead of alternating "east on Monday, west on Tuesday"? Or will they go to that after tonight?

yeah, im not sure why they played games one and two the same day, couldn't they keep alternating? philly/montreal play thurs, hawks and sharks wont play again until friday. i understand they want a game each day on the weekend, but why did they have to play the first two on the same day? i miss not having playoff hockey to watch every day, my wife actually said last night... isn't there a hockey game on tonight? :silly: i think she was finally getting used to hockey every night.
