  1. Keith is rumored to be getting a new deal too; I think I read the 'hawks are going to give him a 13-year deal!

Kane's money will be a little more than Toews.

13 year deal!?! wow, he's good, but 13 years! also, im surprised that kane's deal is more than toews, especially after the incident in buffalo this summer. i realize kane will put more points on the board, but to quote one of the hawks higher ups (can't remember who)... kane will win us some scoring titles, toews will win us some championships. it will be interesting to see who ends up on the chopping block due to this. i think they should have held on to khabibulin, and i would guess guys like sharp and seabrook will be long gone. i guess it's now or never time this season for the hawks.

  2. i think the team pulls together this weekend without their captain and gets a tough 3 points. whats the biggest strength of this sioux team? balance and depth... so even though losing your all american captain is a huge loss, this team needs to keep playing championship hockey. not only that, du might be without two of its best players also, so we can't be using that as an excuse...

sioux 3, du 3 friday night

sioux 5, du 2 saturday... and a possible troll dasher dance as a bonus ;)

on an interesting side note, cc now is alone in first in the wcha point standings... for the first time since the picture atop the men's column on wcha.com was relevant :D

  3. If I ever see Kristo out there on the point during a power play again it'll be too soon.

couldn't agree with you more. can anyone tell me the last shorty we gave up that wasn't kristo mishandling the puck?? i love kristo as a forward, but i don't think he is cut out to run the point. the point on the pp has to be able to handle and move the puck with confidence, which i think is what he is lacking back there, plus he just wants to get his shot off ;) he would be more dangerous in duncs old spot. i think saturday was a good example of just how much genoway means to this team... i hope he can make it back with full health this season, i agree with whoever said i'll be surprised if its before the new year. i know that we're just a bunch of sioux fans whining, but we can't be the only school who is concerned about the ineptitude of wcha officiating and the fact that players are getting hurt as a direct result of this :D

  4. Those figures from the high profile basketball schools compared to UND's hockey attendance are stunning!

that is pretty amazing! does anyone know what those places hold for attendance? when i was down in omaha, i know the quest center holds around 16,000 or so (guess) for creighton bball games, but not sure how many they actually bring in a game? the only thing i'll say sica, is that hockey is much more regionalized than other sports, and has less fans overall, it is a fact. but i think it is safe to say the hockey fans, college hockey and grand forks in particular are about as loyal a fan base you can find anywhere, any sport!! lets rock the ralph this weekend and sweep the huskies!!

  5. i agree about trupp and toews... in fact i would say they have been our best two forwards so far this season (although gregoire and vandy are animals on the top line too). as to malone... i think he has improved steadily each season, and is turning into a very solid center, and i wouldn't underestimate his offensive ability. now as to the comment about our top line... 3 very skilled players that deserve to be top line guys, but kristo hasn't found it yet. whether he isn't quite in sync with his veteran linemates, or if he is just learning on the go, he is a frosh, we will see. i think he will find it, and hopefully soon, as he is a very talented hockey player, but i think he is just finding his spot on his line and in the sioux system. i'll go out on a limb and say kristo buries a couple this weekend! GO SIOUX!!

  6. According to Brad's blog, Hakstol doesn't know yet if Hextall will be available to play against SCSU or not.

Everyone else will be available to play.

i know he only has two goals on the season, but this is a huge hole to fill. he's one of the proven guys who can just flat bury it when need be. hope he heals quick and we see him back out soon! GO SIOUX!

  7. osh with 2 assists in a much needed win for the blues... thats a team that came in with high expectations and has struggled early. i know its early in the season, but the veterans on that team need to light a fire if they want to find their way back to the playoffs.

  8. Nope, nothing wrong with them. I just wish the one I was scheduled to fly out of Hancock on Sunday actually did fly out of Hancock. :)

Maybe you can answer a question for me> why aren't the planes checked out after they land when they aren't flying out until the next morning? Everytime I've had a flight delayed or cancelled, it has always been the first scheduled flight out and the problem was found after we were all on board!

i would be willing to bet that most of the time, you are never actually given the true reason a flight is cancelled. i mean is there really that many "mechanical issues" with planes? if so, very scary. i had a flight out of fargo cancel on me once due to "mechanical issues" which pushed me back to the next day of course, and completely messed with my travel plans, as i am sure most cancelled flights do. i noticed as i was in line to get my information about the following flight, that there were very few other people scheduled for that flight. my guess is they didn't want to send a plane with a handful of people to mpls, then send it back the next day for another barely full flight the next day... just combine the two, get the same fares and half the fuel. and like you, did not offer us or the others vouchers or other compensation (although after an email from my wife did end up getting some vouchers), and since we live in the area didn't need hotel, which im not sure they would have covered. i feel your frustration, i really hate airline travel.

  9. More and more the coaching world has gone from "What have you done for us?" to "What have you done for us lately?" The margin for error is shrinking all the time, about one down year and your "get out of jail free" card is used up.

Remember a few years ago they wanted to run Joe Paterno out of town on a rail? JOE PATERNO!! Guy is pretty much the face of college football, and a couple subpar seasons had them calling for his head.

Tough racket to be in these days.

what about bowden this year at fsu? thats a goofy deal too. the two winningest coaches in the history of d1 football, and not much slack there. same goes for luciapet. i personally think the guy is a whiny bitch  sorry had to get that in... but from the goofs pov, he delivered you guys two titles, i think you have to cut him some slack, don't you?

  10. or at the x-mas break.

i actually brought this up a while back, and wouldn't be surprised if this happened. i hope it doesn't, but can you really blame him if he does? he needs gametime to get better and to get where he wants to be, which is in pro hockey. he obviously isn't getting any ice time here, so i wouldn't be surprised if he has thought about going elsewhere.

  11. Dr. Gattuso was a very good man. Such a tragedy. I do not know the specifics of his wifes death, nor do i think it is message board discussion, but she was ill for quite some time before she passed. If this turns out to be a homicide (paper seems to indicate a possible robbery?), this is the crap that isn't supposed to happen in ND. My prayers go out to the family, especially the children who lost a mother and father in less than a year.

  12. UM....no he wasn't. He was a top-6 d-man for the U-18s when he was here and played most of the time on the 2nd or 3rd pairing for the season. I saw him play at the Under-18s in Fargo (more than once) and he was not the odd man out. so please...

not sure where the attitude comes from as i said, i don't know much about mattson other than he is a highly touted recruit and, as i stated, a hell of a skater. that being said, the game i saw at the u18 tourney, he got very little 5 on 5 time (maybe a couple of shifts) but looked great out there on both the pp and pk. and i will stick by my statement that he could put some muscle on (as most 17 or 18 year olds need to). i must not be the only one with that thought process, as he is not in a sioux uni this season. i wasn't knocking mattson at all, as i hope he steps in next season and is all we think he can be, just simply stated i don't think there was a spot for him now (as someone stated he could have cracked the lineup this season, and even last season). so please i guess?? (must be the new whatever?) :) just kidding, im not that old.

  13. friday night: sioux 3, seawolves 3. eids in net

sat night: sioux 4, seawolves 2. dell in net

i also saw some concerning patterns in eids' game last weekend. i actually thought he looked very unsettled the first half of friday's game, but the goofs couldn't capitalize. that being said, he is 3-0-1 with a shutout, and i think he will become a force this season.

can't say i think kristo is being a puck hog, but to each their own. i think he is immensely talented, and will eventually settle in with his linemates. like someone stated, he is going at a piont per game clip... ill take that.

as to fienhage, i never said gleason or blood weren't better or deserved to be in, but how much longer do you think he will sit up in the pressbox and watch hockey games? he's a big body, high draft pick, and needs playing time to improve. look at how much blood improved, which i think all the playing time he got last year was a big part of that. i love the dman combos we have right now, but i feel for fienhage as he seems to be the odd man out, and i wouldn't be too surprised, if he continues not to play, that he might jump to juniors to get some ice time, and i wouldn't blame him.

  14. Our old people like to sit on their hands....it's a social status thing in GF for them to say they were at the games.

For all the people that are complaining about vulgar cheers, why don't you try and do something to change that when you go to the Ralph next time.

Can the vulgar chant issue be compared to the Sioux nickname issue (there's a vocal minority against it)?

i would qualify as one of your "old people", and am a very active supporter at the games. love to cheer and be loud, no hand sitting involved. in fact i think the last couple of seasons the crowd has been alot better. i might have agreed with you a few seasons ago, but i think the atmosphere at the ralph has significantly improved, and i think the coaches and players would agree. another thing with hockey is that there is down time, tv timeouts, etc. which make it hard for it to be loud the entire game, but i think our crowd as a whole has been pretty good the last season or two.

i love our student section, i think they are loud and get the crowd going, but i do agree with the vulgarity issue. im not one who is going to complain to someone to stop it, as student section cheers have included vulgarity since the begining of time, and that probably won't change, but i don't think that swearing adds anything to a cheer that otherwise wouldn't be there. luckily we sit across the rink from the student section, so my kids usually can't hear the explitives clearly and i can lie to them when they ask... "what are they saying daddy?"

no, as someone else stated, i think the vocal minority are those shouting the explitives.

as i said before, the game wouldn't be the same without the students being so into the game, i love it, just not sure all the cheers need explitives to be effective.

  15. Mattson is not a scorer. Never has been. He is like a bigger Taylor Chorney. He will only get a couple goals a year, but he will rack up alot of assists. He could of easily been in the line up this year, heck he could of cracked the line up last year the way he played (even though he was still in high school)!

i don't know alot about mattson, and i hope you're right. but he was the 7th dman on the development team last season here for the u18 and didn't see much 5 on 5 time, which leads me to believe he would not have cracked the sioux lineup this season. he is a hell of a skater from what i saw, but definately could put a little meat on the bones.

  16. I don't think it's really anyone's business what it is unless it starts to affect the team in a negative way, and I haven't noticed anything on the ice. Also I don't think late night parties are a "locker room" issue per se. I would guess it would be more along the lines of clashing on different issues (personalities, ice time, etc)

i agree it's noones business, which is odd hak brought it up, but it's not all that surprising with 10 freshman and some good players (and highly drafted) who have yet to see the ice that there would be some tension. the biggest question mark to me is why fienhage hasn't seen the ice yet. i honestly thought he would be in the lineup most nights. i hope he gets some icetime this weekend and plays well.

  17. Lets set the story strait. The media is having a great ride here with this story. Peter Chwialkowski graduated from UND and has never been in this kind of situation before. This is an unfortunate event that happened but people need to realize that there are two sides to every story and the only story the media is hearing is the story of Jason Smith's father who wasn't even there.

so please enlighten us what really happened if it wasn't... back and forth smack talk between both groups, one of chwialkowski's group pushing smith's brother who was on crutches, smith stepping in to defend his brother then getting cold cocked by chwialkowski, smith knocked out cold cracked his skull and ends up in the hospital. if there was a different sequence of events, i'm sure we would all like to know exactly what went down. and to your "supporting facts" that he is a und grad and hasn't been in trouble before this... neither have any bearing on this situation.

  18. Will you also not care when interest starts to drop and UND is playing in a half-empty arena? One of the biggest reasons Fighting Sioux hockey grew in popularity compared to the other sports at UND was because it was the only Division I sport and played against the "big boys" on a regular basis. If you take away the "big time" element and play more no-name and DII schools, interest in the program will wane over time. The reality is that if the UM and UW leave the WCHA, UND would jump at any chance it has to play Big Ten schools. All of the WCHA schools would.

first off, i said this was my opinion, i realize und would schedule either of these two if given the opportunity, i simply stated i don't feel we should, however i completely disagree with your thought that the support for sioux hockey would falter if they didn't. we would still play big time schools in the remaining wcha teams, and we could schedule some non-conference foes who would garner outside interest like we have in the past... maine, cornell or other bigger schools out east. the fact of the matter is, with the pwr set up the way it is, it is advantageous for the sioux to play a lighter non-conference schedule, ie - merrimack.

  19. I don't think any of the Big Ten teams think they would be missing any rivals at all. For example, there would be no chance that UND/SCSU/Mankato/Duluth would turn down an offer from the Gophers to play, so we'd still get those games.

Plus the less hardcore fans would much rather see Michigan/tOSU/MSU than Bemidji/Omaha/UAA/MTU/etc.

sioux-gopher week is THE best rivalry in all of sports, bar none, but if the big 10 schools want to take their "superiority" to their own conference, i will be 100% in favor of not scheduling any of them at all, including um and uw, for the simple reason of the attitude gooferz so elequently displayed above (which is a common attitude of these "superior" schools, we'll get the games we want anyways). the wcha would obviously take a hit losing two great programs, but hopefully it would grow college hockey if this ever happens, and then i say F the bthc, and let them play each other 6 times a season (i realize these teams will have no problem getting games, but ideally, the rest of college hockey would stand up for itself and say, ok big guys, want to play us? come here and do it, god knows um doesnt travel :( ) i realize this is a pipe dream as these schools will fill a schedule every season, but just voicing my opinion as to what should happen if the bthc happens... stand up for each other college hockey. the sioux can schedule home and homes with holy cross or air force or merrimack for all i care, heck with the way the pwr works now, cupcake wins are worth a heck of a lot more than a tough loss to a good team anyways.

    GO SIOUX!!
