  1. There must have been some sort of problem with the counting, since it wasn't reported in the box score or on the statistics page of www.fightingsioux.com. It looked like around 8500 to me.
  2. It didn't look too promising for Strouth to be back anytime soon based upon the way he came off the field without putting any weight on his leg. I definitely think Beatty can do the job, if he can stay healthy. But if Strouth is out for an extended period of time, does that mean Armentrout or Brady get more carries, or might Dressler be shifted more to running back to fill the role Strouth did when Roland was the primary ball carrier, i.e. the lightning to go along with Beatty's thunder?
  3. Last night was evidently a pretty terrible performance by Central. On paper, they should have had little trouble with an inexperienced Minot team, but of course games aren't played on paper.
  4. According to a report on the WDAZ news tonight, the Spririt Lake tribal council delayed a vote on the resolution to oppose UND's use of the Fighting Sioux name until they can meet with Kupchella next week. According to the report, an informal vote was taken today, with two members voting to oppose UND's use of the name, and two voting not to oppose it. Presumably, the tribal chairperson would be the deciding vote. At least the door remains open to the Spirit Lake tribe offering some semblance of support for UND's continued use of the name and logo.

    Drew Thomas

No, I don't typically read the Williston paper. But I will do a google news search almost daily for North Dakota football-related stories. It's a good way to read up on local angle stories from players' home town papers, as well as to get recruiting info. I thought the Hoffelt info was news-worthy since when his name was removed from the roster a few weeks ago, it appeared that perhaps his career was over.
  6. Grand Forks Central's Alys Seay has verbally committed to UND. link

Although this isn't about Drew Thomas, it appears that another injured player, Andy Hoffelt, will be returning next season, according to this article in the Williston paper.
  8. I haven't heard anything, but I would kind of expect that she'll take a red-shirt year. Hopefully, between Jahner (when she's not playing the point), Guinn, Beck and Bagaason, the wing positions should still be pretty solid.
  9. Every time I hear Leigh Jeanotte speak out against the Fighting Sioux name, I have to laugh at the irony that he allowed his daughters to attend Grand Forks Central back in the 80's--when GFC used the name "Redskins." He has been all over the map on the Indian team name issue. Obviously he originally didn't think it was a big deal, as the above example should illustrate. Then about five years ago he said in a conversation with my wife that UND's use of the Fighting Sioux name was honorable, but he had a problem with how rival fans treated the name. Now, the name and logo are outright wrong in his view. He has no real credibility IMO.
  10. Considering it's Labor Day weekend, anything over 9000 would be good. Last year's Labor Day weekend game (Mesa St.) drew 8400. I don't believe it will be close to a sell-out.
  11. The new women's basketball roster has been posted. Glynn and walk-on Haug didn't return, and Draayer is now a student assistant.
  12. This is actually a bigger issue than Red River when you consider that no Grand Forks school has won a football title since 1946. Hopefully Central can finally break through this year to end this unbelievable dryspell.
  13. A few more GFC hockey players are Paul Graveline, who played at Wisconsin in the mid 80's; Dave Hanson, who played for Denver in the mid-to-late 80's; and Paul Markovich, who played at CC around that same time and was a Rhodes scholar, as well.
  14. I guess I am getting pretty old (GFC class of '88). Salander graduated in about 1994 or so, so that SEEMS pretty recent to an old geezer like myself.
  15. One more fairly recent GFC track and field dI athlete was Disa Salander, who threw the shot and disc at Kentucky. And although it was a long time ago, GFC has also produced two olympic track and field medalists--Cliff Cushman (Kansas; silver in 400m hurdles in 1960) and John Bennett (Marquette; silver in long jump in 1956).
  16. GFC (since the mid-80's) Mike Markovich (Denver hockey) Jay Ness (Lake Superior State hockey) Chad Johnson (UND hockey) Tony Gasparini (UMD hockey) Jake Moreland (SCSU hockey) Jay Panzer Jeff Panzer Nick Fuher Joey Gasparini (Vermont hockey) In terms of non-hockey, there's been a few from track: Wade Juntunen (AZ) Dani Parkos (MN) A few other throwers, but I can't remember who went where.
  17. It depends on how far back you want to go, and it would be very hard to say with regard to dII, but in terms of dI, I'd say in no particular order--Central, Red River and Fargo South. Central has obviously had a lot of hockey players go dI over the years.
  18. Central Washington will be starting an offensive line consisting of three red-shirt freshmen and two sophomores link so I would certainly hope that UND's front seven will completely dominate the line of scrimmage. I know CWU is very high on their quarterback and receivers, and I would expect a lot of three-step drops as they likely know that UND's pass rushers will be in the qb's face all day if they do much of anything besides short drops. I also wouldn't expect CWU to be able to effectively run the ball. Defensively, CWU is very inexperienced and quite small. As has been mentioned, they lost their entire front seven from last year. I definitely don't expect that they have an NCC-caliber defense this year. The forecast is for a hot (upper 80's) and windy (20-30 mph) day. That would seem to indicate that passing might be difficult for at least half of the game.

    Recruits

A couple of Canadian players UND is apparently recruiting are running back Justin Andrushko from BC, and linebacker Curtis Dublanko from the Calgary area.

Bismarck High's top player is probably OL/DL Dylan Glasser, who is about 6'3", 270. Weston Dressler's younger brother Ryan may be someone to keep an eye on, as well, although I don't believe his speed compares to Weston's. Bismarck High plays at Grand Forks Central tonight and that should be a very interesting game.
  21. It's official. link
