  1. So, is anybody buying this statement?:
  2. Langen is going to be playing professionally in the Netherlands. link
  3. Brown won, according to the Herald results. The big surprise to me was Grand Forks ward 1 voting in Terry "I'm gonna vote no on everything" Bjerke.
  4. Some very sad news to report--the mother of incoming freshman Seth Wisthoff (and former Sioux fullback David Wisthoff) passed away on Thursday: link My deepest sympathies go out to the Wisthoff family.
  5. I believe a new position was recently created, so I don't think anyone is necessarily leaving. If this turns out to be true, I can certainly understand why he'd come back. I'm sure he wants to be a head coach, and conventional wisdom is that the UND job will be open within a few years. It should help his chances to be chosen to succeed Roebuck if he's on the staff when that time comes. He's a proven recruiter, and also a likeable guy from everything I've heard.
  6. Roebuck's heir apparent in a few years? If so, it would be a wise move. Brewster can flat out recruit.
  7. Later in the thread linked above from the dyestat site, somebody posted the applicable USATF rule, and apparently the meet referee does have the discretion to order a race to be re-run, although from what I've read I'm surprised the referee chose to do so under these circumstances. While it was an unfortunate decision from Mersereau's perspective, I must say I'm pleased to see he has that kind of speed. In my mind, he was the biggest unknown amongst this year's Wisco signings.
  8. I know for certain that you can take a red-shirt season even after your freshman year. Particularly in basketball, I can think of several instances in the past at the major college level at schools like Kentucky where a kid took a red-shirt year after his sophomore or even junior year. Had Chappell not already red-shirted, he would not be losing a year of eligibility.
  9. I think for the most part, it has stayed fairly consistent. In actuality, last year was the best regular season average ever, at 10,790/game. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, the playoff games killed the average.
  10. I must reserve judgment until the full schedule is released, but one would think this would have been an area where Betty Ralston should have been an asset, as she was a long-time dI volleyball coach and presumably still has a lot of connections.
  11. By way of comparison in terms of first-year transition schedules, UND's is far better than NDSU's was, as they only played five dI games (including SDSU twice). SDSU had fewer dI games, although they did have several major conference opponents (Rutgers, Kentucky, Oregon St., USD, Purdue, Oklahoma St. and Alabama). It will be interesting to see what USD's schedule looks like.
  12. A few changes based upon departures and the depth chart in the spring game program (denoted in bold).

    Overtime

I don't think Borman is around GF anymore. The Village Inn on 32nd Ave. S. is owned by some people from Minot. Does this look about right for the history of the Overtime building?: 1. Red Barn 2. Toppers 3. BBQ place 4. 42nd St. Eatery 5. Dagwoods 6. Overtime

    Overtime

To go back further still, its original occupant was a burger place called The Red Barn. That was back in about 1977 or 1978.
  15. Good for RT. I was kind of hoping he'd come back to UND in some sort of fundraising capacity.
  16. It seems pretty weird that a schedule still hasn't been released when the first match is presumably just two and a half months away. I can't imagine how frustrated everyone would be had the football schedule not been announced yet!
  17. Just a small clarification--Dressler was a good sprinter his jr. year, qualifying with pretty solid times in both the 200 and 400. He was mostly known as an 800 meter and sprint relay runner, however. He was runner up at state in the 800 as a jr., and ran relays for his other three events. I wonder if he's the only male class A runner--at least over the past 25 years or so--to have top-two finishes at state in the 100, 200, 400 and 800?
  18. He's clearly the fastest ND football player in North Dakota from the class of 2008, and he's about 6'3", 190. That makes him pretty notable IMO. If you want to compare him to somebody, compare his times to what Matt Anderson ran in high school. The two were comparable in size as high schoolers, but Sorensen's times were clearly better, especially in the 200.
  19. I think either Darcy (Deutsch) Cascaes or Tonia Jones would be good candidates if either were interested in getting back to the area. Darcy is currently at Minneapolis DeLaSalle, and I believe Tonia is currently at St. Thomas, although not in the athletic department to the best of my knowledge.
  20. To this day, I'm still convinced that had Weston Dressler's unbelievable sr. year of track at Bismarck High occurred prior to football signing day, his recruitment may have been completely different. I have a feeling he'd have had considerable dI interest if schools had realized the true extent of his speed. On a similar note, I can't help but wonder the same about Brian Sorensen? Has a non-receiver/running back/db ever replicated what Sorensen did this past weekend at the state track meet? Not to my knowledge.

    track

This Herald article does a good job of summarizing the problem of the extreme lack of decent track facilities in Grand Forks. It's a shame. I don't think lack of funds is generally a problem for Grand Forks public schools, so I'm not buying that as an excuse for the state of the Cushman track. As for UND, perhaps having a coach who is a bit more proactive in terms of fundraising/lobbying would help?

    track

Litzinger was unrecruited by UND? That's bizarre. He won state his senior year, and I believe he set the state record (since broken). If HE wasn't recruited, it begs the question of whether ANY recruiting goes on in the men's program. As far as I know, men's track is about the only program at UND which never seems to announce any signees...
