I don't think you're going to be able to make a correlation like that. I certainly don't believe it helps academics. The only benefit I see from athletics, is more recognition for a school nationally, which in turn might add a small amount of value to a students diploma (in terms of recognition of coming from a specific school with a reputation). It may also booster support from community/fans/alumni/donors in terms of donations. Other than that, I don't see to much else. Just my 2 cents.

Hey dummy, where did I say it would make it more difficult? I never said you should consider dropping Hockey. I said it wasn't going to help you. Also funny that you seem to think that having those connections will get you into either the BigSky or MidCon conferences... The only people who make the decisions of you getting in are the respective university presidents, and since NONE of them are employed at schools in the group listed above, that pretty much does nothing for you. I also didn't say the REA wasn't an assest. If you could turn it around to be used as a Basketball Arena, then you have something going for you (yes I realize it can already be used for it, no need to correct me). Maybe next time, don't go overboard in your attempt to be a facetious smartass...

We've been rejected 3 times there star2city. Everytime the discussion came up, the indicating factor was "TRAVEL". But, being as UND is nowhere near NDSU in terms of geography that shouldn't make a difference, as you've indicated above. Right? The west coast schools are not going to let any of the Dakota schools in. It's just too far to travel (in their opinions) and they don't need NDSU/SDSU/UND/USD when they already have Montana and Montana State to bring in the fans. Quit wasting your time on it. (Strategically timed, uh huh. If by that you mean that it has finally been done to shutup the supporters harping down Kupchella's throat...then yes it's strategically time) Finally, having Division I Hockey isn't going to help you at all in the search for a conference if the ones you're looking at include Mid-Con or BigSky.

I personally don't believe that anything is going to come out of the October (or whenever) President meetings. The Big Sky has two excellent institutions and lots of crap that holds them back (Sac State, Portland State, etc...). Any school in our region whether it be NDSU/SDSU/UND/USD/or whatever will not get in unless the West Coast bias leaves the conference. They've stated OVER and OVER again that TRAVEL has always been the issue that "hurts the Dakota schools". They are also interested mostly in the fickle dream that if they add a subpar school next to a major metropolitan area that they are going to have an instant jump in interest towards the BSC. Didn't happen with Sac State and didn't happen with Portland or Washington. I don't see NDSU or SDSU jumping ship (even though we aren't in yet, and that's still iffy) from the MidCon to goto the BigTease, unless we we're offered the chance to play alternating Home and Away games EVERY year with BOTH Montana schools. Remember though, everyone else in the conference already wants to play them and won't be willing to give up a game to any of us. For those whom are truely lost and don't realize how much of a car salesman Fullerton really is, please spare yourself and wake up.

Not to say that this proposal would pass in the Minn. Legislature, but I would certainly hate to see what it would do to both our campuses ( NDSU and UND ) considering how large of a share of Minnesota students we seem to attract. I couldn't imagine what would happen if 35% of UND's and 40% of NDSU's student bodies just disappeared. The NDUS as a whole would not be in a very good situation. I hope it doesn't make it past the legislative floor. Nothing against Minnesota for trying to keep students in state, but I've heard many against the proposal.

It sounds like there is enough of a need for two.

Why couldn't we provide both? I would imagine if there was enough need, it wouldn't be a problem.

How about giving the money to NDSU, which is already in Fargo, to provide those services? Why must the state spend money to setup a physical presence when they already have a University here that is more than capable of doing so. Give NDSU the money for the program, I'm sure we can provide it. We really don't need universities setting up other branches in cities where a current university already has a base of operations.

How about we wait to hear directly from either Chapman's or Pott's mouths, not some second party sources, giving some validity to the claims and backing them up. Otherwise, we have no better than the situation a month ago when there was talk that the board was going to ask for Pott's removal only later to give him a vote of confidence.

I'm going to wait on commenting until I hear a point-by-point listing of what Potts deems as issues so both parties can make valid arguements towards/against those claims. Right now we're sitting on "one of the Presidents snuffs his nose at me". The tax-payers of North Dakota have a right to know what's up. Where's the beef?

You don't need to jump to conclusions that are far fetched as that. I never said that. I said UND, besides its medical program with the Veterans Hospital, doesn't need a physical location in Fargo.
