  6. I guess this one is for me... the current mastheads are temporary special headers that celebrate 10 years of the existence of this web site (woohoo!). They feature contemporary branding (the Hockey @ SiouxSports.com, etc... wording) and shaded background imagery (green-shaded REA / Alerus imagery in the background of the text). One could argue I should've adopted more similar imagery for the forums banner instead of the rather generic text, though it has the advantage of being very small for quicker / lower bandwidth downloads. I'm honestly not sure what the placement of this question in the "Sioux name" section is attempting to imply -- SiouxSports.com is completely immune to any NCAA pressure (we're classified as a "booster" in NCAA terminology) so its brand management is completely independent of the naming controversy. The banners change every couple years, and these were put in place long before the current controversy -- almost a year ago now, in anticipation of the 2005 anniversary. To eventually replace these, I am working on new imagery that will return to featuring more Indian motifs, but if not ready in time, the mastheads may revert to the former imagery when the anniversary ends.
  7. Golden Rams throw another interception deep after having moved the ball at will downfield. Huge INT return by UND, TD on the first play after the return. Again, how frustrating must it be to be a WCU fan right now? Their offense is slicing through our D, but we always make the big opportunistic defense / special teams play at the right time.
  8. Glas kicks a 47 yarder. 20-7 UND.
  9. 1st half stats First downs WCU 8 UND 10 rushing WCU 17 61yds, UND 17 69yds passing WCU 7-13 ??yds 1Int; UND 13-16 83yds WCU 3 fumbles, none lost Possession time: WCU 14:45, UND 15:15 3rd down conv: WCU 3/6, UND 3/6 Pretty tight game outside the 90 yard return by UND. Also worth noting, 0 penalties for UND (nice change from this time last year).
  10. Very opportunistic game by UND so far. West Chester's offense is doing well, pushing through N.D.'s defense; however, UND is making the big plays at the right times. It would be very frustrating to be a WCU fan right now.
  11. Washington's biggest play so far... tackling a Sioux defender
  12. From the West Chester broadcast, someone to keep an eye on: Freshman Mike Washington set a school record with five touchdowns last week in his first collegiate game.
  13. Kicking off today's game with some pregame facts: Sioux are riding an 18 game home winning streak, dating back to Nov 2, 2002 (35-36 loss to Mankato). Though unknown to UND fans (West Chester has never played an NCC member), West Chester is UND's first solid test, ranked 15th in the latest coaches' poll. West Chester is coming off an 11-win season, having made the NCAA tournament last year, having been eliminated by eventual champion, Valdosta State. This is West Chester's third trip EVER West of the Mississippi for a game. WCU is now the second winningest Division II program in the nation (.683) behind Texas A&M - Kingsville...the Golden Rams own an NCAA-recognized record of 488-222-17 (since 1927 when WCU became a four-year institution) West Chester audio broadcast West Chester media release
  14. I think these references to adopting the "Sioux" label because of the strength of the North Dakota Indians explicitly honored (m-w.com , a showing of usually merited respect) the Sioux: Too bad the continuation of the far left article on the 4th image wasn't included, it seems like it would have given further editorial rationale for the new name. However, it is worth remembering that these are editorials and letters to the editor in a student newspaper, not statements from the University. Thanks for posting the articles, though, very interesting.
  15. Through their exemptions, the NCAA is consistently claiming that Indians have the right to determine the use of their names, a narrow standard that removes most of the "common sense" criticisms of the NCAA's rule. On the flipside, UND gave the NCAA plenty of other reasons it could grant UND an exemption AND made it perfectly clear that a lawsuit focused on the public domain use of Indian names and massive media attention are forthcoming should UND lose. I suspect the NCAA is currently debating the merits of finding "unique cause" to give UND an exemption, thereby silencing the loudest remaining appellant but granting another criterion for appeal to the remaining punished institutions; or risking an ongoing media and court battle that would certainly continue their embarrassment and that, if lost, would gut the NCAA ruling and open the floodgates for all remaining punished institutions.

  18. A fine question, and one a few of us have been asking. The Spirit Lake resolution of support did specifically stipulate an ongoing dialog with the tribes, and the withdrawal of support cites the lack of such as a primary reason. I haven't heard any details about what contacts the University had with the tribes after the resolution of support but before this NCAA rule created a new incentive. As I mentioned previously, if UND does keep the name, I hope they take this as a "teachable moment" and work to establish that sort of relationship and dialog after the dust settles.
  19. I agree. Unfortunately, such a dialog could never honestly take place while the nickname controversy is being actively considered because then UND's motives are viewed with suspicion. It's not surprising that UND has received a tepid response when it approaches the tribes in that situation. However, after the decision had been made in 2000, imagine if UND had gone to the tribes to try to establish a more collegial dialog and relationship. Sit down and explain, "The name controversy is over now, it's staying Fighting Sioux, we're not here to discuss that. However, we do want to work with you to use the name and imagery respectfully, better the institution's relationship with the tribes, etc...". While UND has undoubtedly done great things for Indians in the region, it hasn't fostered that "special relationship" at local tribal leadership level that won FSU's approval and appeal and will win CMU's appeal for them. Spirit Lake specifically cited UND's lack of doing that as a reason for their flipflop. If UND keeps the Sioux name, either through appeal or legal action, I hope they don't just consider the issue settled and go on with life as usual, rather (after the dust settles) take that opportunity to begin the dialog and establish that relationship with the local tribes. If UND loses its appeal, the obvious differentiator with those who won theirs will be that UND failed to establish that relationship in the past.
  20. That's what I meant by "doesn't win a reversal" -- all administrative and legal remedies are exhausted and failed to overturn the NCAA's rule. Yes, the NCAA wanted to punish UND into changing the name; if that punishment sticks (again, after all remedies are exhausted), many would question if weathering the punishment to keep the name was worth it. Regardless, this discussion is a little premature. I just wanted to clarify that I was commenting on the potential situation "if UND doesn't win a reversal", as opposed to suggesting they just give up now. I really do like the breadth of the appeal and the strong suggestion that a lawsuit would be forthcoming if the appeal weren't ruled upon favorably.
  21. 4 fumbles, getting scary -- didn't lose any so hasn't affected the game outcome much, but it's becoming a little reminiscent of watching Culpepper in some of his fumble-fests. Anyone with video have anything to say about why the exchanges are so bad?
