  1. 1,700...I think it's a tribute to their incredible parks and recreation department. The kids grow up doing stuff instead of sitting on the floor playing video games.
  2. Just looking at WCHA teams, I am thinking GF would fall in 8th...Roseau, Fairbult, Moorhead, Maple Grove, Rochester, Duluth, Eden Prairie, and Brooklyn Park all have more players. GF has 6, 7 if you count Irmen, that currently play in the WCHA. Not sure about the last five years, but as far as this year is concerned, you're a little off. Still respectable though. Eliminate the whole debate though and ask Gopher fans how this last year has been...without GF, they would be headed for a series with Denver or Wisconsin, possibly even UMD!!! I've always said, it's QUALITY not QUANTITY!!!
  3. I have no idea...not trying to start something here, I guess I would consider a native to be one born into a particular place, in this case GF. I know Blake lived here, I played golf against him in HS, and I know Tanabe lived here as well as his brother Marcus went to RR...but my question was in regard to a person born in Grand Forks making it to the NHL...forget it if it's too much to think about. Good luck to the Sioux this weekend, not as though they need it.
  4. Josh Olson scored 1 minute 40 seconds into the third period in his NHL Debut. I know a lot have made claims that Blake and Tanabe were born in GF, their bios don't say that. I guess they thought they would go further if they listed MN hometowns... Talk to Virg, whoever, but when is the last time a true Grand Forks native scored in his NHL debut...kinda thinking it has never happened. Way to go Olson!!! Josh Olson Scores!!!
  5. Tanabe's listing for Phoenix shows he was born in White Bear Lake...thinking that prior to Olson, it was Fido...none of his boys played in the NHL?
  6. Blakers claims his hometown is GF, but he was born in Moorhead, not sure how accurate that is, as I know in a Sioux pregame show he has stated otherwise. Just thought this was a pretty big deal for you folks up there, but apparently not...must happen all the time!!
  7. Not sure when the last time this happened, but Josh Olson, a Grand Forks native, will make his debut in the NHL this evening! While he lived in Roseau throughout middle school and high school, he was born in GF and went to Lake Agassiz. Anyone know when the last person actually born in GF played in the NHL? Just curious... Josh Olson Recalled by Panthers
  8. Welcome to the insane world of Crazy Claude and his trumpet... Can't believe he made an appearance at the Ralph...do you know that guy gets paid over $1000 a night for his stuff? I've seen him at AHL games in San Antonio and various NHL games. What did you think? Did he give an "Air Power" out to any men/women in uniform? How about banging on the glass with his hat turned sideways? Pretty funny the first time you see him, but he needs to come up with some new stuff...which I heard he may have in climbing over the glass??? Congrats to the Sioux...from San Antonio!!!
  9. Don't tell me that Crazy Claude made an appearance with his trumpet to the Ralph...did he? Was he wearing wind pants and a jersey, and banged his head on the glass with his hat turned sideways? If so, that knucklehead wore out his welcome down here in San Antonio at Rampage games...you're right, it gets old quick. Let me know if it was him...thanks.
  10. Congrats to Tony Hrkac on his 900th career point as a professional! I have had the opportunity to see him play several times this year and he still has the scoring touch. By the way, does anyone still have a copy of "Heavy Metal Hockey." They ought to bring that out as a little inspiration for the boys heading into this weekend and the rest of the year. "Hrkac fakes, he shoots, he scores!" "Bob Joyce, you control the boards...Bob Joyce you OWN the boards." "Ian Kidd wants to go to Detroit too." Anyone got any more lines, or am I dating myself? Anyways, congrats to Hrkac.... Milwaukee Admirals
  11. Spiewak released from PTO in San Antonio...
  12. Speaking of Landon Wilson, there is an article in the February issue of American Hockey Magazine inside the back cover on how Landon's eye injury has helped him to focus on charitable causes. Good article...look for it to come out on usahockey.com once the March issue is relaesed...mentions his two years at NoDak.
  13. My bad...it's a Professional Tryout Offer...here is the story... Spiewak PTO
  14. Professional Try Out... San Antonio Rampage
  15. Spiewak is in San Antonio on a PTO with the San Antonio Rampage, Fl. Panthers affiliate. He joins Lee Goren and Josh Olson as players with ties to UND/GF.
  16. Fights are not as comon as they used to be in hockey so I like them just the way they are now. Fighting in the NHL is up 30% this year...
  17. Mind you, this is only the third period penalty stats in a game between Lubbock and Odessa in the Central Hockey League...can you imagine seeing this? 18. Johnson gives props to the level that he even got Melrose to make a comment on how he reigns from the University of North Dakota (A COLLEGE PROGRAM)...pretty nice considering he thinks college hockey can't produce.
  19. Follow up to those of you who didn't read the other post. Found this tribute to Scott Brower and found it moving...take a look. Scott Brower
  20. Perhaps one of my most incredible memories of the Sioux hockey tradition was the video "Heavy Metal Hockey" put out after the Sioux won the 1987 National Championship. Quotes like: Ian Kidd wants to go to Detroit too. Bob Joyce, you control the boards...Bob Joyce you OWN the boards. We've got steady Eddie, and Scotty Brower too. You think we're born in Rivers...God loves Canadians too. Anyone have anything to add...and on another subject...I live in Texas now and we have the Central Hockey League down here. The league has an award called the Scott Brower Memorial award...Many of you know that he was tragically killed in a car accident in Corpus Christi, TX and I recently came across this tribute to him. I am a little computer illiterate and don't know how to do this correctly, but here goes nothing.... My Webpage
