  1. All the concern is certainly appreciated. ;)

The Gophers broke in three freshmen defensemen back in '04-'05 and made the Frozen Four. No matter how many leave I'm still thinking they will put out a decent team.

Decent doesn't get you to the Frozen Four :(

Seriously - while the players coming in are good, I don't think it replaces the talent that is leaving. For example who will be running the point on the PP? Who will play against the opposition's best line?

Too bad you can't trade in college hockey - we could work a deal for one of our D for a Gopher forward.

  2. I think the losses of those three will only be felt in the D. I think Minnesota brings in enough offensive talent every year to accomodate for forwards leaving early. They've just had trouble getting steady and decent defensive recruits. Goli and EJ were their best. Hagemo, IMO, would probably be as good as well if he could still play.

If AG leaves, the Gophs lose over 100 points from the blueline (Vannelli, EJ, Goligoski).

  3. Doesn't the Ducks aggrssive, gritty style remind you of a certain college hockey team :(

And doesn't the "softness" especially up front of the Wild remind you of another college hockey team (hint - it plays in the State of Hockey) ;):(

  4. Some of you may know that there's a world U17 tournament held every year (up until last year (when it was held in Rochester) it had been in Slovakia). Anyway, Carey Eades coached the White Team that included Budish, as well as Ben Hanowski and John O'Neill (Anoka). Sioux recruit Joe Gleason played on the Blue Team. Coaching international and select teams has long been a good way to open up recruiting avenues for underagers.

I believe Kristo was on the team as well - and he verbally committed shortly after :silly:

Speaking of Eades, how long will he stay an Associate Head Coach at UND? We are lucky to have him part of the staff - I would think he would be at the top of any AD's list when the time comes to look for a head coach.

  5. I just can't lay off this fool. I think I have a problem... :silly:

The top 8 scorers are highlighted. Of the younger players Tropp (MSU) is the leading scorer with 62 pts. While Malone has 33. The key difference is that Tropp plays on the PP alot more and has 23 more PP points. The USHL is a league of older players...

Why would you include Foss/Christian in this list - they only played USHL before/after their HS season.

  6. As always, Minnesota will be the team to beat. DU will be good but there have been rumblings that Peter Manino may be leaving for the pros. If that happens they will not be nearly as formidable. The teams with steady goaltending will prevail. MN/ND/DU/CC/MT will all have solid goaltending baring injury. Too soon to make any predictions since all the early departures have not been formalized.

If EJ and AG are gone, this will be a substantial blow for the Gopher D. Along with Vannelli, they accounted for over 100 ponts last year. The returnees (Peltier, Fischer, Schack and Anderson) has less than 40 points between them.

Will they be able to get the puck out their zone next year? Fairchild is talented but he is no EJ/AG (projected CSS 5th round pick).

  7. I was reading another board and someone said that Ben Hanowski was down to either UND or SCSU. Heisenberg has him as the number two recruit out of the Midwest for 09'. Anyone have any info on him?

I believe he is being coached at LF by ex Sioux gtender Tony Couture.

  8. you dont sit any of the 7 mentioned, genoway plays forward, hes not sitting and neither will the other 6

The downside to this is that the staff has a lot of time invested in Genoway at D - you would be essentially "throwing that away" if he plays forward next year.

Some would argue he was a top 4 D at the end of the season. Moving him to F is a last/drastic resort.

  9. There's no way that LaPoint sits on the bench much next season. He is ready for the college level and will be a great player for the Sioux.

Also, I think we see a healthy Forney do quite well next year in the lineup.

My guess is that both LaPoint and Marto come in this fall.

Which will leave us with (9): Bina, Radke, Chorney, Lee, Genoway, LaPoint, Jones, Finley, Marto

With Radke staying at forward, that leaves us with 8 dmen, which is the magic number. Marto will be the odd man out, but will still get playing time with injuries and whatnot. We need him to get some experience this upcoming year, because the d-corps will be depleted the year after that. Then from the 7 remaining, you either play the 6 the practiced the best that week, or move Genoway up to forward.

That also leaves some extra room should Lee or Finley leave this summer.

I'm sure the staff thought at least one of the three high draft D would be gone after their soph year.

Obviously it is an inexact science. Better to have too many players than scrambling in July/August trying to find a player or bringing in a USHL player a year before you wanted too.

  10. NO ONE said Lapointe is not ready for the Sioux - But will there be a spot for him - I'm very sure Marto is coming in next yr

I should have just bet a few of you & made some $$$ :glare:

& some of you sound like someone said he (Lapointe) is not good enough or won't make it - This is how threads & rumors get started & people ASSuME things

IMO LaPoint >Marto (yes I've seen them both play)

  11. I saw LaPoint play with Green Bay this past winter, great skater, great passer. Good offensive sense. Not the most physical defensemen, but gets the job done defensively.

2nd in the league scoring among D I believe.

  12. Defense is a tough thing to learn at this level and Genoway lacks the size advantage to help him in some situations. Genoway has great skills and can be a good defenseman, but there were times this season where his lack of size and experience really hurt him back by the net. That said, in the scenario as you lay it out, he would be the more likely candidate to move to forward. But in that scenario, if he moves back to D in 2008, I don't think he would be as proficient as he could be, but that might just have to be the way things have to be.

Part of my answer stems from this year where, even though the Sioux struggled to score up front, the coaches seemed that they wanted Genoway back at D. Maybe this was because they anticipated next year's log jam, I don't know.

D is a logjam if no one leaves early. If Lee or Finley leaves, Lapoint slides in to that spot and that is your top 6 for the majority of the season.

D is a tough position to play, and after the fine rookie season Genoway had, it would not make sense to throw that experience away and have him spend a year at forward - and then potentially move back to D the following year.

I'm sure the staff were projecting at least one early departure from Lee/Chorney/Finley - especially after the 05 entry draft. It actually would make their lives easier if one would go.

  13. So is this why we struggle early in the yr - with the Cycling the puck ?

& is Cycling suppose to beat the TRAP ?

&/or does this cause more dumping the puck in to your offensive end (other than to change lines) ?

Cycling is done when you have possession of the puck in the offensive zone.

Any forecheck (122 or 212) is designed to get the puck back once you lose possession of the puck.

  14. The 2nd half of the Michigan game, once we had the lead back, most of the time we backed off and only sent 1 man deep and frustrated Mich in the neutral zone.

I don't know if this constitutes a trap or not. In retrospect maybe we could have slowed BC down and took fewer attack zone penalties if we had backed off from time to time vs BC Thur.

  15. Chicago's web site has an announcement that they won the draft lottery, and will pick first. There IS NOTHIHG on there about JT signing today, or anything other than an article comparing his skills to Yzerman. I didn't read the article, so maybe something is in there, but I saw nothing on the main page about JT signing.

By moving from 5 to 1, the Hawks are about to draft someone that could potentially step in and play next year, and they could tell JT to wait one more year.
