  1. I have a question for everyone as it relates to this topic. Not trying to start any arguments, just looking for an honest answer from people. There are obviously two sides to this, people that don't want a nickname and people that do want a nickname. For arguments sake I know there are some that just like the name North Dakota but it's pretty obvious about 85% of the no nickname crowd is Sioux forever people. So we have Sioux forever vs a new nickname. What that new name is doesn't matter for my question.

My question is why should the portion of the fanbase/alums/students that want to move on have to wait 10-15 years so the other group of fans can properly mourn the Sioux name before we select a new one?

The other thing is the group of fans/alums wanting to move on MIGHT be bigger. Yes they may disagree on what the new name is but every poll I have seen tells me more fans want to move on with some kind of name. I'm not talking a specific name I am talking any name vs no nickname.

So, why should the "potential," majority have to wait for the "potential," minority to properly mourn the Sioux name before moving? Again not trying to start a big argument just curious what people's thoughts are?

You don't have to wait... move on. You are free to jump on the bandwagon at any time, but dont demand others to follow you...and don't critisize, ridicule, or taunt with names and conjecture those with differing opinions. That seems to be the tactic for some.

  2. I do wish the committee would come out and say "we don't mean North Dakota as a nickname; we mean 'no nickname'".

Why? "North Dakota" as a nickname would be in violation of the NCAA policy because Dakota is a tribe name and can not be used as a nickname. Yes, I'm harping on this point, but people need to know what the intention is, because I really don't believe they mean "North Dakota" as the nickname and should say so to be clear.

    Beating it to death...

  3. Let's be clear on this.  Mpls has hardly been an "excellent" source for Al-Shabaab.  That makes it sound like hundreds of boys and men have left to join these organizations and that's just not the case.  Exaggerating the facts does nothing to advance the discussion.

There have been some, yes (but we're probably talking in the neighborhood of a dozen or so), and I join with you in expressing concern regarding anyone who benefits from living here and who decides to go fight for one of those groups.

You've got a few dozen men out of a community of a few tens of thousands who are wack-jobs and go fight for these terrorist groups.  But that should tarnish a whole community who really do love being here.

  4. Anyone know what was said in the meeting that prompted them to eliminate Cavalry and Explorers before the voting tonight?

The committee members obviously disapprove of the military.

  5. ... in a glass case, like a museum exhibit commemorating, recalling the past.

Hmmmm.... So, the exhibits behind glass cases at, say, the Holocaust Museum, are for commemoration? I guess that's one theory.

  6.  Losing has that effect.  ;)

Roger... just pointing out that the sports franchise marketing expert that some here are counting on is experiencing difficulties in his day job.

  7. Sadly I think this is correct. It's the same thinking the NCAA gave when they required UND to protect the Fighting Sioux nickname - which means they continue to make and sell a small amount of the "hostile and abusive" logo. The NCAA knew that if they required UND to retire and never use it the logo and name would become rampant.

Patent law requires use or it eventually expires.  Nothing earthshaking about NCAAs requirement.

  8. They're busy ... on the committee*.

    * Carla Christofferson and Dave St. Peter --> those two surely understand the value of brand identity when marketing a sports franchise

*and the butts-in-seats watching the twins gets smaller each season.  surpised he hasn't been fired.

  9. Considering that both of those were in use before the settlement agreement, I think you'd have a hard time convincing someone they are new, as they settlement requires.  Even if you think you might win that argument, the NCAA sure isn't going to let it slide with out a nice, lengthy court battle.  Not worth wasting more money on a losing battle.

So, by this argument, the new nickname may not have been used... ever?  Completely new?  Original?  That's quite a leap.

  10. The NCAA says that UND must select a new name.  That part is cleary stated in the settlement.  The reason behind it is that not having a name would result in fans just using the Fighting Sioux name unnoficially as their mascot.  Replacing it with nothing results in continues use of the old name.  The NCAA knew this would happen.  And they were right.  It is still happening.  We haven't officially been the Fighting Sioux for nearly 3 years and people still refer to the teams as the Sioux.  This is precisely why the NCAA mandated in the settlement that we must select a new name.T

The settlement demands UND end its use of Fighting Sioux and select a new nickname.  It doesn't state anywhere that no nickname isn't an option. If the parties were concerned about that adaptation, or the use of "North Dakota," as its new nickname, perhaps that specific language should have been placed in the settlement. I suppose we can agree that legal settlements are not the place for imprecise, interpretable language.

  11. Can people please realize that just being "North Dakota" is NOT an option?  The settlement agreement that UND signed clearly states that.  The NCAA made sure that UND would have to select a new nickname because having none would result in the perpetual use of the old one.  Any you cannot deny that is not currently happening right now.  So if you think that having no name and just being known as "North Dakota" is an option....I am hear to inform you that you are dead wrong and that it is absolutely without a doubt not an option for UND.

You have been beating this drum since the beginning.  Is there a quote or link to the actual language in the settlement that states anything near "having none would result in the perpetual use of the old one?"   And "new" doesn't meet that requirement.  Thanks.

  12. That wasn't the explanation; they told Hak they didn't see the puck in the net.

Really, watching the replay? If you see what you don't want to see, or thought you didn't see, then you won't see it.

That was the official ruling...?! If so, those clowns should be suspended indefinitely.

  13. Always amazed by "intent to blow the whistle" claims. From the video, the ref's whistle hand appears clearly at his side, with no apparent movement upward to blow. It only moved after the puck was in and out. It's a horrible allowance for ref's to amend their shortcomings. The officials screwed up and should be punished by the league. I challenge the press corps, university athletics to put pressure on the league. Make them own this embarrassment.
