Based on the the players I saw out there I wouldn't be too upset about losing them.  Maybe a couple

    There would be a few.

Those same players were able to get a lot of teams to 3rd down a lot of times.  Just couldn’t finish a series.  Some of that is execution and some is coaching experience.  i’m ok letting spring ball play out and everyone make a decision that is best for them.   That may include coaches bringing in different players.

Correct. They also have a track record of doing it so others want to join that coach. Recruiting is important, and good coaches are good at this, partly because their track record speaks for itself.

Are we at that point? Of course not. After 10 years, our current staff is seen from the outside as average at best, and unable to get out of their own way when opportunity presents itself to take the next step.

One step forward (beat NDSU), one step back (shut out the next week). One step forward (make playoffs), one step back (lose at home after uproar about not hosting home playoff game the previous season).   One step forward (seeded playoff team in 2016), one step back (lose at home right away in 2016 when seeded, follow it up in 2017 with losing season). One step forward (MVFC champs in pandemic year), one step back (losing season in 2021, the next season).

So many examples of why this staff epitomizes mediocrity.

Back to your original point; a good coach can identify potential and enhance it. That is also what good teachers do. The football “teachers” at UND aren’t finding and developing enough diamonds in the rough. Consistency is lacking.

So coaches can’t recruit or develop talent?

You keep holding on to that as that's the only thing you got.  How'd that work out in the playoffs and recruiting?

You were pretty quiet all season.  Glad to see you finally ventured back over.

If I were Polacek I would do 1 of 2 things.

    1. Get rid of Roehl ASAP.

    2. Have Roehl make a public statement about his support for Polacek.  Then behind closed doors inform him if you ever undermine me I will fire your @ss.

Number 1 is the much safer option for a HC.  Number 2 is always lingering in a bad way as "the players" choice.

Not sure why Roehl would want to stick around after “not being the guy” to both the AD and the booster$.   From everything I have heard if he was not given the head coach job….he was not staying.  Will that change?

if your Polosek, do you want to retain the guy that players wanted to have your job.  Certainly some risk with that if you can’t give him a promotion (position coach to coordinator).

Both are in a very tough spot.

Are you actually this clueless or just pretending … I can’t tell. There are a few good ones on this staff, and to my knowledge they all have great intentions, but the overall direction and leadership (head coach) clearly is not working to elevate UND football further. The main voice in the room isn’t ascending the program. That’s been the main theme all along, but yet you miss the boat and try deviate with this crap?

I just assumed all the times you mentioned how bad the coaching staff was and should  be let go or we are accepting “mediocrity and status quo” you actually meant the entire staff.  Cause that has been your message over and over for the last year.

Now it’s just the head coach?

Was worried about this. UND cleaning house in late 2024 even more likely at this point …

Then you get your wish.   Love how you are suddenly concerned about UND losing a coach from a staff you have spent an entire year criticizing

Addition by subtraction, in terms of the podcast. Shannon, like his brother, is a really nice guy; but you can’t have an honest podcast when it’s co-hosted by the inept head coach’s brother.

    You should start one

    Disagree on the secondary.

If they can’t get pressure on the quarterback, they will continue to cover like dogsh*t on 3rd and long. Too much time and receivers will eventually always get open.

Football is won at the line of scrimmage, which includes EDGE rushes (that’s outside linebacker for the novices out there). Anyone who says different don’t know ball…

If you would read what I posted I was replying to what fixes would be available in the portal.  Big, fast dlinemen are going to be just as high in demand as OL.  Everyone wants them, even those who don’t know football.  Lol.

Not likely to be immediate help there but let’s set a false reality on fixing through the portal.

Offensive linemen is a non-get in the transfer portal due to how high the demand is. Just look at Kilty- lost to FBS school. UND is locked in on development of their offense, specifically offensive line. They maybe could manage a D2 quarterback if they want to be aggressive, but my guess is they stick with current offensive players - including Feeney and Kaminski - unless maybe a receiver or running back becomes available. Still, OL and QB are most important offensive positions.

As for defense, the defensive front, which includes DL and EDGE, are the most important positions on defense, and there are opportunities available in portal. Need to capitalize big-time on these positions or else 2024 is certainly a lame duck season. So far, no splashes yet to suggest ‘24 will be any different.

The quickest and potentially easiest path for defensive improvement is through the secondary.  Just more of those players out there than big body Dlinemen.  I would argue that is as competitive as oline in the portal at this point.

need to hit JUCO or sell a D2 guy on opportunities up front.

Did you see Nelson's pre-game comments to his team just before they left the locker room for the field - wonder if he gets trashed by USD fans for his low-key approach?

Isn’t the story we are supposed to stick to is it “took his amazing motivation to win with Bubbas guys in Duluth”?   Saw the same deer in headlights look on USDs sidelines today.

Rumor has it that Bubba addressed the team last week with more fire than anything seen in the past.  Maybe the message is finally resonating that the “Mr. Roger’s” approach to firing up the team is not really working.  Also hearing that our younger quarterbacks are making real efforts to take on leadership roles.  While it can be hard to expect significant changes based on history, I remain hopeful that we will see moves forward again next year.  This team can be frustrating, but I’m hoping for improvement and will be right back tailgating and in my seats next year.  I am, however,  hoping we see real changes on defense and get some of the old Sioux linebacker and secondary hitting back into the system.  Our coverage schemes on third down clearly have to be scrapped as well.  We have a whole year to work on that….

    3…..2….

how many times did you see bo's body language say "you've got to be kidding tommy".........i saw it a few times and so did some others.

what else could he have meant??????  has to aimed at someone that won't be here next year.....if all the coaches are coming back it aint them.....so it must be a player....so it must be a player that either graduated or entered the portal........so who did bo rely on the most do his job??? easton...kind of ...wright???? nope.............TOMMY?  bingo.

Maybe his body language was “my shoulder really fucking hurts right now” and you read it wrong.

"Bo Belquist says he's coming back to UND for another season"

This is big news.  Sky was falling last week.

A quiet start to this week and this news mid week is good for the program.  Keeping your leader around and the comments from him make me think there is some alignment from those in the locker room that want to stay here.

And the same people that are against NIL are old people that are mad money like this wasn't around when they were college aged. The same thing can be said both ways.

Even if this is "completely unsustainable long term", what is the other option? Make kids play for free again? Tell a kid they aren't allowed to do what is best for them?? That they aren't allowed to be paid what they are worth?? But coaches are allowed to do exactly that?

Yup that makes a whole lot of sense. I just don't understand the argument of a full grown adult being mad that kids are allowed to make money and make decisions that are best for them.

I don’t think anyone is upset with the kids.  I believe the argument against NIL is how sustainable it is year to year, how college sports will be ruined with how this is now tied to recruiting, and the transfer portal being a part of it.

Look past the short term financial benefit  for athletes of some sports and tell me how sustainable college sports are for all student athletes.

Fargo and NDSU are being proactive towards football.

UND made no coaching changes, but they will also sit tight on current Alston awards and do nothing else to prevent football program’s deterioration.

Not all on UND, of course; need supporters for UND football to step up and initiate a collective for football program. But hard to do that with the current lack of competent leadership in place for football program.

I’m not sure any finger pointing you can do here are towards the administration.   As hard as you want to spin it…..this is on the fans like me and you.

To add some context to what Bison06 is alluding to, NDSU lost two All-American wrestlers to NIL last year; both to Iowa. Rumor is they’re both getting north of $100,000. Hockey schools like UM, UW, Notre Dame and maybe a few others will be able to offer kids hundreds of thousands of dollars.
    It’s not just a football/basketball thing.

I agree with you and am not sure how well UND would complete.  NIL was pushed by the larger states that have the schools that can support it.  It’s not good for G5 and lower at any sport.

Also, fans can be upset with schools but this one is all in fans.  The UND athletic dept is doing what they can, and has a great collective going that gives them and their athletes an option.  The big NIL money is all coming from fans and I give credit to Jay for working to get things going for NDSU.  I don’t think paying a handful of players is good for a locker room but sitting back with no option is not good either.
